Even after they come out, Shane is a private person. So is Ilya. And, look, Shane is very happy that the centaurs are so accepting. He really, really has to remind himself how relieved and happy he is about it. He also remembers that this is how locker rooms are. As captain of the metros, the amount of times he had to tell off a player for showing pictures of their girlfriend's breasts or ass to other players was uncomfortably high.

So he really should have expected the question, "so who is, you know, the man?"

"Excuse me?"

"Dude, you can't ask that," a very progressive Young advised. "You gotta ask who's the top. Not the man."

Shane exhaled slowly. He loves his team he loves his team he loves his team.

"That is private," Shane said firmly. "And inappropriate in the workplace."

He was, of course, largely ignored. And while neither him nor Ilya really enjoyed their team, their friends, the internet, and homophobic players guessing their bedroom arraignments, Shane was surprised that nearly everyone got it wrong.

The general consensus what that Shane was the man. His going out outfit was usually jeans and a t-shirt, Ilya's was tight leather pants and a leopard print with four buttons undone. When they drank, Shane got a beer and Ilya either got shots or the sweetest cocktail they had. Ilya was more flamboyant, Shane was more reserved. Ilya liked to bake, Shane liked to grill.

And yes, Shane was aware why all these seemingly innocuous personality traits accumulated to make Shane the man and Ilya the girl. Still, it didn't stop it being generally annoying, offensive, and uncomfortable. Nonetheless, Shane liked finding the silver lining in that this was something just for them to know.

Ilya finds it more amusing then Shane. And, like most things, tries to use it to his advantage.

"Shaaaane, carry my bag," Ilya held out his hockey bag.

"No."

"I can't believe you treat your girlfriend like this."

"Is it a happy bouquet or an 'i'm sorry' one?" Holmsberg asked as he and the rookies peered over Young's phone. "Get the all roses one."

"That's the most expensive one!"

"Dude."

"Shane," Ilya whined, calling their attention to him. "Why don't you ever buy me flowers?"

"That's messed up, dude," LaPointe shook his head.

"I'll buy you roses, Roz." Wyatt grinned.

"You will not," Shane grumbled.

"Ah," Ilya winced as he lowered himself on the bench.

"You okay?" Shane asked him. He had taken a hard check into the boards early in the game and, despite reassuring Shane he was fine, he knew his hip was killing him.

"Fine," Ilya said predictability. "Just sore. Will be fine in a minute."

"Hey," Zane nudged Shane's shoulder. "Go easy on him on game days, okay? We need him."

"Go easy?" Shane's eyebrows drew together. "What do you - Oh! No, that isn't - he - I didn't -"

"It's fine, man. Whatever you two-"

"No!" Shane interrupted. "He's still sore off of Richard's check - Not - Ilya, stop laughing!"

"Doesn't it bother you?" Shane asks Ilya one day.

"What?"

"That everyone assumes you're, you know," Shane gestured, a cute little blush on his cheeks. "The girl."

"There is no girl," Ilya raises his eyebrows and palms Shane through his pants. "I would know."

"Asshole," Shane scoffs. "You know what I mean."

"I know," Ilya smiled. "But no. It does not bother me."

"Why not?"

"Because it's hot," Ilya lifted his hands, over Shane's chest and up to his face. "That people can't even imagine you like this."

Ilya dips to kiss his neck and Shane's eyes flutter shut.

"Makes no sense," Ilya continued, hands roaming down to Shane's ass. "To me, I know this immediately."

"F-fuck off, you did not."

"Oh, I did," Ilya gripped his chin, forcing Shane to look at him. "I see you... those beautiful freckles and I know how desperate you are for it. So obvious. Thought everyone was looking at this boy thinking how good he would look getting fucked. How well he would take it."

they don't have a problem with showering together at the locker room actually because they don't need to hide or rush or use it as an excuse for sex. shower sex was never really about the shower it was just so shane could moan as loud as he wanted in hotels without people in the other room hearing. now they actually use the shower to debrief and gossip and just talk about the game they played and strategies. the problem actually is both of them losing track of time because they’ll just stand there sharing the shower and chatting like they’re at home and then shower together again at home and talk about all the things they couldn’t in the locker room. it doesn’t mean they don’t have sex shower anymore, it’s just they can have sex in more comfortable places and showering together is now bonding time

people think Shane gets more perturbed when someone fucks with his pre-game rituals, but it's actually Ilya.

Shane's rituals are, in large part autism, and disruptions to his routine happen frequently. he's travelling, he's living with relatively low support, his routine is going to get disrupted; but he's an adult with relatively low support needs, so he knows how to deal with it. if someone pranks him by fucking with his gear, he's not going to freak out. He might re-arrange it then re-do it, but he'll be fine. Keep in mind also, he's been teased much more harshly for doing the same thing as everyone else, he wouldn't be able to get away with noticeably freaking out (it'd only make people do it more).

Ilya on the other hand, is totally superstitious. it's cannon that he is sort of spiritual but doesn't fully believe in a god, which is the perfect foundation to have some weirdly entrenched beliefs about the Proper Hockey Pre-Game Ritual.

so when someone switches Shane & Ilya's lockers, Shane is the one taking a deep breath, making a joke, and moving on (outwardly, at least). Ilya is the one flipping his shit and swearing at people for making them lose before the game even begins.

When I say I want Shane and Ilya to retire at the same time, I mean the exact same time. As in after their last game ever, there is a five minute standoff as they both wait for the other to step off the ice first. "After you. No please you go first. No you. No you. You got onto the ice first Ilya. Well you were born first Hollander so you go." They eventually agree to hold hands and step off together, squeezing their big shoulders thru the small gap at the same time.

This continues into who leaves the shower first, who leaves the locker room first, who leaves the stadium first etc. They are an hour late to their retirement party.

Basically, kidnapper au where Ilya holds Shane hostage at his own cottage. Shane is initially tied up and bound BUT he gradually gains certain "privileges" as time goes on and he behaves - bathroom, showers (all escorted and supervised), no manacles while he sleeps, longer chains so he can move around, even leisure activities later down the line. The only constant is he stays blindfolded the entire time and Ilya never speaks.

Eventually, the sensory deprivation makes Shane wholly dependent on Ilya as his sole source of companionship, specifically Ilya's touch because it's the only point of human contact he has. Shane becomes so reliant on Ilya that eventually the worst punishment Ilya can dole out is just,,, leaving him alone. Shane is always so desperately panicked when Ilya returns, so so grateful, big heaving sobs as he clings to Ilya, as he begs him not to do it ever again, he'll take any other punishment, he'd rather be beaten or starved, he'd let Ilya break his legs, burn him, choke him, anything ANYTHING but being left alone in the dark and the quiet,,,

this au was made in a lab for me you have no idea!!!!!! I’m also thinking that the sensory deprivation really helps to make Shane even more submissive and desperate to please. Because he gets so little sensory input and so few indications of Ilya’s pleasure/displeasure with him, every tiny scrap of information is blown up to epic proportions in his mind, every bit of feedback feeling like a life or death situation. Like now the quietest, bitten back moan Ilya makes as he pushes inside Shane makes him feel victorious, the slight exhale of breath through his nose when he’s displeased makes him feel suicidal, the sound of Ilya’s hand as it slaps his face feels like relief, because he’s still worthy of being corrected. He grows to hate his own sounds because they drown that feedback out, begs for a gag because he wants to be able to hear Ilya better, kisses his feet in relief when he lets him wear one. (I think if Ilya did decide to talk or let him see him, he would go catatonic for a bit, not just because of the reveal but because being able to see Ilya’s reactions would feel like seeing God. I do sometimes imagine Shane and Ilya doing crazy shit with their money like building a secret room or buying a bunch of vintage arcade racing games or building a private cinema just because they can, and they've had to deny themselves so much over the years, that these are easy luxuries to give themselves. And I think about David also getting to enjoy them whenever he comes over and the way he'd geek out about them with Shane and Ilya. He's never had the opportunity nor means to own or build anything like this but it's doing wonders for his dad heart that his boys do. That's what it was all for – all the hard work and sacrifice. He just wanted Shane, and now Ilya too, to have the absolute best life possible.

And when for his birthday one year, his boys buy him a couple of vintage arcade racing games for the secret games and puzzles room they've sneakily had built onto the Hollanders' cottage, well it does wonders for David's own inner child too.

they’re at the bar at some random city they just played (and won) and ilya is annoyed watching shane play another round of a card game that the rookies taught him. they been at the road for three days now and haven’t had the chance to have sex and ilya was expecting that today was finally the day he was making love with the love of his life only to be replaced by some random card games that shane is enjoying a little to much to his taste. and now ilya is pouting, arms crossed in a booth with bood and troy glaring at his husband laughing out loud with rookies over some boring cards that the rules don’t make any sense and is cockblocking him. until, irritated as fuck, he pulls his phone and send shane a text saying “if we don’t leave right now i’m not gonna fuck you for the entire week” he watches the moment his husband reads his text, looks up to him, gets up, put all his cards on the table, say goodbye to his rookies (that complains and begs him to stay. “sorry boys there’s nothing i can do need to leave”) then walks straight over to where ilya is seated, grabbing his hand and pulls him out of the bar. obviously they go back to the hotel and fuck nasty

it’s a rare moment in the morning as ilya has woken up before shane for once. and he’s just watching his husband sleeping so peacefully and he’s just thinking about how perfect shane is. he’s just caressing shane’s hair and then his cheeks and he can’t help himself and gives him pecks all over his face and he goes back to keeping caressing shane’s hair which has gotten so much longer. he sometimes misses the baby bangs but shane looks so good with his hair like this. and then shane stirs, waking up and slowly smile at ilya and is such a beautiful genuine smile that it’s just for them and shane’s like “what a miracle you woke up before me” still sleepy and soft and ilya’s like “ah no i always wake up before you it’s just i always get back to sleep before you wake up” and shane chuckles “yeah sure” he replies while closing the distance between them and snuggling with his husband, holding each other tightly and not longer after that both of them fall back asleep

Now that the show made Sveta and Ilya childhood best friends, I’ve had this headcanon that she has helped Ilya sneak old pictures and relics out before his father and brother get rid of them. Like imagine 12 yo Ilya grabbing as much of Irina’s smaller stuff, the least noticeable but still important things, and handing off to Svetlana after the funeral. Or her grabbing an old stuffie of his because she knows it’ll disappear permanently if she doesn’t. Or after Ilya’s fight with his brother, when his mind is still fogged with rage and he just wants out, she goes back to his room for the last of it. She doesn’t tell him, and as the years went by he kept forgetting. One day she tells Shane, who then begs her to bring them over. They spend an entire day going through everything while Ilya is on a brand trip Shane couldn’t attend. He comes home to pictures of him Irina on their walls and toys he hasn’t seen in decades.
