I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.

I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:

Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)

Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)

Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often

Eat dessert first

Celebrate well, and often

Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)

Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.

Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate

Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)

Walk without having a specific destination or goal

Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.

I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.

This is easily the most interesting take I've ever seen discussing why the older generations seem to struggle so much with the discussions and changes with gender identity, and I think it's absolutely worth reading.

Obviously it doesn't cover 100% of intolerant people, but I think it explains a decent chunk tbh.

(But I would still very much argue, still the case in the majority culture of the UK, where there are a LOT of things where a woman could approach a woman and do/say a thing, or a man could approach a man and do/say a thing, and that would "mean" something totally different than if a man approached a woman and did it and vice-versa. Thus, if anyone is going to have gender, EVERYONE must have gender, so that you can do either the "we are the same gender" script or "we are different gender" script at the very least...)

In my native language (Slovene), verbs are so heavily gendered that I had to learn how to speak in the masculine form after speaking in the feminine form for 25+ years (that's how I was taught to speak as a child so it took a while). I was pre-T but dressed masc, it would often happen that people would get visibly distressed if they weren't sure about my gender just based on how I looked. They wouldn't know how to address me. Even though they always had the option to use the formal form of address, which is gender neutral.

Often times, if I had to use a verb in first-person singular, I would just misgender myself because I didn't want to get clocked as trans all the time just based on the fact that I was using the masculine form but obviously didn't pass as a man, and people would seem relieved afterwards. It was very awkward to have people struggle to navigate a normal conversation with me just because they weren't able to gender me within the first few seconds of encountering me.

When you speak such a language like that, gendering is a built-in, fine-tuned mechanism — you aren't even aware you're doing it, and it's very unpleasant for people when they suddenly become aware of it (which only happens when it fails).

one of my favorite things to do in limited perspective is write sentences about the things someone doesn't do. he doesn't open his eyes. he doesn't reach out. i LOVE sentences like that. if it's describing the narrator, it's a reflection of their desires, something they're holding themselves back from. there's a tension between urge and action. it makes you ask why they wanted or felt compelled to do that, and also why they ultimately didn't. and if it's describing someone else, it tells you about the narrator's expectations. how they perceive that other person or their relationship. what they thought the other person was going to do, or thought the other person should have done, but failed to. negative action sentences are everything.

I can't believe more people don't know about the antique pattern library! All those public domain, vintage handiwork books and magazines are scanned in pdf format, and FREE TO DOWNLOAD! Languages include French, Italian, German, and English. It just does need to be mentioned that most of the earlier English publications are British, so American users need to make sure to convert the instructions as necessary. Especially crochet instructions, where a British double crochet is an American single. No, I don't know why 🤣
