Heated Rivalry is already a romance AND a workplace drama. Expecting it to also be a commentary on toxic sports culture is like asking Grey’s Anatomy to be a commentary on the flaws of the healthcare system in the US.
Like yeah, it can make the occasional remark, but that’s not what it’s about.
To be clear I’m not saying we don’t need commentary on toxic sports culture.
But I am saying that I don’t think the romance we got with Shane & Ilya could possibly exist within a book that was actually designed to be commentary about toxic sports culture, because then they would have to be subject to the realities of of that world, and that just isn’t compatible with the genre.
Could Rachel have done more to address the problems in sports? Yes.
Could she have written a realistic story that accurately reflected the environment that is the modern NHL & still given us lovable characters & a happy ending? No.
