Shane and Ilya struggle to fit in in queer spaces - mostly because Shane in particular struggles. Itβs a challenge for them and Ilya worries that Shane is still uncomfortable with being out, but heβs fine about them being together in public. They go grocery shopping, get dinner, walk Anya all over, and Shane is always holding his hand and happily letting Ilya steal kisses.
Then itβs like: is it internalized homophobia and he just doesnβt like being around other gays? Not really. He doesnβt feel judgmental necessarily about the other people? But he definitely doesnβt Get It. If anything he kind of wishes that he was able to understand what about all of it brings them joy because they look so happy but it all makes him anxious to his fucking core. It makes him feel like he did at high school parties, completely off-beat and unable to follow what the social cues are.
Then Harris throws a pride bbq at his and Troyβs place and Shane is squirmy again, zoning in and out of a conversation that βtheyβreβ in but really itβs just Ilya talking and Shane humming occasionally. Until Ilya nudges him away from the conversation and says βThe lesbians are playing corn hole over there, why donβt you go try that?β
Shane wanders over, and somehow very quickly finds himself paired up with a woman wearing a backwards Centaurs cap and a pair of khaki shorts Shane swears he also owns. He blurts that thought out and across the grass another woman in Chacos and a Hawaiian shirt (he later finds out this is her wife) cups her hands around her mouth and yells βGAYYYβ in a booming voice nearly identical to how heβs heard it in locker rooms for years. Except for once the boisterous hollering isnβt shoving Shane further into an invisible box, itβs inviting him into the joke. βI think my husband owns that shirt!β He shouts back and he gets a very familiar clap on the shoulder. Itβs extremely jock-y and warm and approving.
By the end of the night Shane has several new friends from his hours viciously chirping these women over lawn games. Heβs sweaty and grass stained and has like five new contacts in his phone and plans to go running with Anya later that week. Ilya is a little sunburnt and loose, full of sangria and hot dogs (βplease donβt throw up in our carβ Shane does have to pull over) and new gossip that he recounts to Shane as well as he can remember it the whole car ride home.
We donβt talk about this enough. With all the big romantic gestures in The Long Game, this, to me, is one of the most romantic moments.
We know Ilya isnβt a fan of Shaneβs restrictive diet. He teases him about it, but Ilya is an expert ragebaiter who knows how to tease the people he cares about when they feel safe and in ways that never really hurt.
Shane is βfranticβ in this scene. Ilya has the perfect opening to say something about his diet, and he doesnβt take it. He sees that Shane is panicking, steps in and fixes it. He was looking at that menu thinking about Shane and Shaneβs fuckass diet that Ilya doesnβt even like. But he knows this is important to Shane. He knows Shane is already nervous about being on a date with Ilya in public and being with another queer couple. So he meets Shaneβs needs without Shane ever having to ask, and he does it quietly, without drawing any attention, so that Shane can save face.
Of course heβs gonna tease him about it a little bit later because thatβs what they do. But he only does that AFTER Shaneβs had a chance to catch his breath and feel safe again.
To be loved is to be known indeed.

SAVE ME, DEAN BEING A BITCH TO RICH PEOPLE!! DEAN BEING A BITCH TO RICH PEOPLE, SAVE ME!!!
but for real, sarah and her dad (and even sam) looking at dean pointedly like he doesn't belong at the estate sale, meanwhile dean is stuffing his face with mini quiches and making snide remarks. you don't understand i would die for him. i would make him so many mini quiches!!!!!!!!!!!
DEAN: We got a problem - I can't find my wallet. SAM: How is that my problem?*
*man who has been bribing people with dean's money and letting dean pay for all their motel rooms for the past 18 episodes.....
like in 1.07 we have a bit of a stretch in terms of my specific dean & layers readings... but he is only wearing a t-shirt when he says:
DEAN: You didn't have to con her or do any...special favors or anything like that?
also just dean trying to smash the glass in the crypt and then being like "Come on Dean!" and shooting the glass is so endearing to me. i LOVE HIM
LIKE
DEAN pounds at the glass container, then smashes at it with the butt of his gun but it doesn't break. He turns to run back to the car, gun in hand, then stops and looks down at it. DEAN (Grimacing in realization that he could shoot with the gun.): Come on Dean! DEAN shoots the glass
i am so utterly charmed by him it's unreal
i've been phasing the phrase 'google it' out of my vocabulary and going back to 'look it up'. fuck you youve lost your generic trademark privileges
one of the funniest conversations I ever had with my ex was when they were still getting used to Celsius and asked me "what's 20 degrees?" and instead of converting it, I said "it's the highest your dad will ever let you set the thermostat and when you say you're cold he tells you to put on another sweater, we're not made of money" and they went "oh, 68"
the fact that this reference was that fucking precise was something they went on to tell people about for years.
Congratulations on the cat
can we kill the idea that yawning=bored because there's a million reasons to be yawning and being condescendingly asked "oh im sorry are we boring you?" because of something you can't control is really rude.
you're not boring me this is a side effect of my medication but thank you for deciding that my yawns are some sort of insult toward you and going on the offensive i loved it π
Yes yes i know love is love. But they are still killing CHILDREN. over this.
"Love is love" is a milquetoast cishet marketing phrase
Pride is a FUCK YOU to a society that wants us dead.
itβs actually quite easy to take over a small local government group if you really want to, bc if you volunteer consistently people will just put you in charge of whatever. Iβm now one of like three people at a nature preserve making official decisions about trails, events, putting in a prairie, and designing a series of illustrations for a storybook trail etc., and itβs just because last summer I started coming over once a week to help the naturalist out for a couple hours. Mine now. you too can steal an organization and shape it to your will π«΅
Can I be honest with yall I don't want to hear SHIT against cishets at pride this year
"But it's not FOR them!!!" The biggest military power in the world belongs to a christofascist nation overseen by a felon found guilty of 34 federal crimes and has greenlit a gestapo with more direct funding than the entire military of Canada for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. Let Hetero Jessica throw some biodegradable glitter at a municipal parade
At this point if anyone is trying to exclude anyone benignly pro-queer from a pro-queer space I'm just going to assume you're a fed or something idk like something something destabilize the movement from within or whatever
it's crazy how little the supernatural extra-media shit understands the show's characters...
like okay i don't like john but in the comics he is quite LITERALLY a mass murderer of humans... come on man that's not
and i just started reading the new ones and it OPENS with dean asking sam for his wallet to pay for shit. like PLEASE. and of course dean is such a one-dimensional play boy guy... like fanon dean is real. he's in the fucking comics and he SUCKS
also like i read a lot of the spn novels but i stopped after the one where dean is just lying to lisa constantly.... like that is NOT what was happening????
it's just really gross to me to see like these complex, interesting characters get painted with such a broad an uncareful brush....
even sam is like... such a whiny, loser in the comics. like i will grant he is whiny sometimes in canon. but like.... in the comics he is pathetic and annoying and not in the good way. it's in the way that feels like he's written by an incel who's always complaining that girls dont like nice guys.
like who are these people???? get out of my house.
but i always want to read this stuff bc what if there's little tiny good parts .... like the comic where dean runs away from john but comes back for sam.....
EXCUSE ME????
And thatβs that on that.
Happy Pride 2025. This post is 5 years old, and Iβm in equal parts proud of it, and annoyed by how chaotic and tacky it is. So Iβve decided to make a new version: one where all the additions are in a single reblog, and with integrated image descriptions (thank you @oddler14 for providing most of these back then!). I would love it if people reblogged this version instead, even if I understand the previous version is much more widespread on Tumblr.
I am one of the people who, for a long time, didnβt feel queer enough. Specifically, as a nonbinary person, I struggled for a long time to believe I was trans enough to even deserve to label myself as trans. This post was the start of my journey unlearning that shame and guilt, which was caused in part by the gatekeepy rhetoric that was predominant in many online spaces. Today, I am confident and joyous in my trans, nonbinary, queer body and mind.
To my 20-year-old self, and to anyone else who might need to hear this: you are queer enough. Donβt let anyone tell you otherwise. And always, always remember:
