Item Idea: The Gun of Chekhov

This old flintlock pistol has no safety features, but its barrel is true and it is easy to load. In fact, the owner often finds it loaded when they didn’t intend to put any powder or shot in. The Gun of Chekhov has a minor curse that has brought misfortune on many people who encounter it - if a player or GM mentions the gun, it must be fired before the end of the scene, for a reasonable cause and at a reasonable target. If nobody does so, the pistol will fall from a table or pocket and discharge on its own, causing the most dramatic possible damage.

The curse doesn’t prevent you from getting rid of the gun (provided you fire it before you throw it in the sea, or whatever). But are you ever going to find a more perfect way to create tension in a scene?

Sometimes curses in D&D 5e don't really pack a lot of punch when by level 5, if someone has the Remove Curse spell, it's done with. This is why I have made different curses have different tiers. There's just being Cursed which requires the Remove Curse spell. Then there's being inflicted with a Greater Curse, which requires the Greater Restoration or Heal spell.

Finally, there's the ultimate curses of curses known as a Soul-Bound Curse. Curing this requires the spells Mass Heal, Power Word Heal, or Wish. At your discretion, maybe a successful Channel Divinity could cure it as well.

Lets make curses mean something, my fellow DMs.

What is a fantasy heartbreaker? I looked it up but I'm struggling to map my findings onto your reverse heartbreaker post.

In this context, "fantasy heartbreaker" is a colloquial term for when an aspiring new indie tabletop RPG designer decides they're going to Fix What's Wrong With RPGs; however, because their actual experience of the hobby is almost entirely limited to Dungeons & Dragons and very close imitators of Dungeons & Dragons, their revolutionary new game ends up just being a lightly modified version of Dungeons & Dragons.

(Some folks whose actual objective is to produce a lightly modified version of Dungeons & Dragons will ironically describe their own project as a fantasy heartbreaker, but to be a proper example of the type it needs to be unwitting.)

Part of the reason they're called heartbreakers is because they often have a good idea or two buried in the D&D-derivative, but also because back when the term was coined (LONG before Itch.io and DrivethruRPG,) publishing a new RPG cost a lot of money and usually resulted in the would-be designer having a garage full of books they'd spend the rest of their life trying to unload at local gaming conventions.

Yeah, and those two outcomes aren't unconnected. We often joke about how annoying it is to deal with tabletop gamers whose experience of the hobby is so excruciatingly narrow that they think all tabletop RPGs are basically identical to Dungeons & Dragons apart from some renamed stats, so they see no need to branch out; the fantasy heartbreaker really is basically identical to Dungeons & Dragons apart from some renamed stats, so its author is left in the unenviable position of trying to sell a game whose primary target audience is people who already know how to play D&D and can legitimately get exactly the same result by just house-ruling your game's handful of novel ideas onto their favourite edition of D&D.
