disco elysium is a game that makes you feel bad for hours on end and you absolutely should play it during a transitional period of your life and when you have a lot of other problems you arent dealing with. advice from me
the best time to read shit like this is at a moment when it feels way too applicable to your real life circumstances
no-dopamine baddies approaching every single list of tasks like "which of these things will cause the most amount of personal suffering to me if left undone"
guess who just read yet another list of "tools to combat decision paralysis" that was mostly reward-based and got mad
hey this is really insightful. do you have any advice about identifying the linchpin task? i mean obviously "think about it really hard" might be all there is to it. basically i think this concept is good and would welcome more commentary from you, if you have more to add
the trouble is that Thinking (or at least applying the Talking Brain to the task) is counterproductive here, because that's the voice going "we need to clean the kitchen, why aren't we cleaning the kitchen??" and in these circumstances, giving that sector of the mind more oversight won't help.
it is necessary instead to sit down and kinda try and quiet that voice, and then start with considering my physical needs, kinda mentally run through the maslow's pyramid from bottom to top as if I'm dealing with a little kid throwing a tantrum. like, did we sleep last night? have we had lunch? am I lonely? should I call my aunt? do I want to finish the book I've been reading? do I want to boil chicken bones today? what's bothering me? I'll then try out a couple of things that seem likely and while they may not be The Thing it's useful to build momentum anyways.
but like, if I give it space, the answer will float upwards into view and it's usually something I've been putting off for a long-ass time.
and it'll sound So Stupid to the Talking Mind, who has important tasks that it's trying to get done, but we're going to tell that voice that the kitchen will wait while we take down the Christmas tree, fold the laundry that's been in the basket for a week, sketch the idea, call my aunt, whatever it is, and inevitably the Linchpin Task will take about half an hour, and once it's done I can feel the weight lifted off my shoulders.
Linchpin Tasks are sometimes that it's time to deal with The Emotions At The Bottom Of The Pile, which is when a pile of stuff builds up to cover whatever is at the bottom being emotionally fraught. (letters, the shirt I wore the day my grandpa died, y'know, The Emotions)
I've gotten better at identifying when those piles are starting to accrete and dealing with them before they get bad, but like, you gotta be able to identify the pile of stuff your eyeballs keep slipping off because it feels too emotionally difficult to deal with right now, and like, learning to ignore the part of the mind that wants to assign task priority levels is a counter-intuitive way to get things done.
I hope this makes sense. basically, when it comes to doing stuff, do the thing that's most emotionally fraught first, especially if you can come up with a bunch of excuses to not do it.
image description: tags reading #I tend to go for "which of these tasks is the secret task my subconscious has decided is the linchpin of my productivity" #sometimes that task is not something that's actually urgent in a normal sense but if I don't do it first I will put myself in waiting mode #and like I don't want to be waiting on myself to do a thing that I'm specifically not doing because it's not important
Attending to trusts and wills and succession planning and powers of attorney and such with the utmost care, but with the specific aim of making my eventual death as stressful and inconvenient as possible for the greatest possible number of people.
seeing if i can make my last will and testament turing complete
Strictly speaking, "ultimate" means "last", not "best". It's often figuratively employed in the latter sense to suggest that the thing so described is the final word on the subject, after which nothing more need be said, but if we're being real technical, describing a game or movie that was so bad it killed its entire franchise as the "ultimate" is in fact correct.
@ffoxer replied:
Now I'm thinking about the prefix "pen," which as far as I can think I may have only ever seen in "penultimate"
It's Latin for "nearly" or "almost", and it does pop up in a few other English words. "Penultimate", "penumbra" and "peninsula" are the only ones I can think of that you'd even remotely expect to encounter in everyday speech, though; the rest are all medical or mathematical jargon.
#so peninsula means what? #almost island? #lmao (via @actualanxiousswampwitch)
That is the actual etymology of the word "peninsula", yes.
there should be like secret extra editions of dnd that wotc denounces as false like christian apocrypha

that photo of hunter s. thompson shooting his typewriter is such a mood
Could NOT have predicted what I was in for before the image loaded. Why is it a ray gun. Why are they in the snow. Why that outfit in the snow.
That’s not a ray gun, that’s a revolver with an absurdly huge scope on it.
Hunter is in the snow because he lived in the Colorado mountains near Aspen when that picture was taken.
That’s basically his back yard.
He’s dressed like that because up until moments before the photo he was writing.
He’s shooting his typewriter because he’s a writer.
Happy Birthday to Hunter S Thompson!
Hunter S Thompson (July 18, 1937 – February 20, 2005)
I really wish he'd lived, just so I could see what he'd say about Trump. But having to watch Stupid MegaNixon take over the country might've killed him anyway.
they animated this thing exactly as i used to dream they would back when i first read the og manga
so the thing that super bummed me out when I finished reading the manga and then started on the future volumes, was seeing that Masamune Shirow (not their real name lol) had moved away from the fun expressive human designs of the original and began drawing more and more like the movie’s more “realistic” style
I understand why he would do so considering how HUGE the first movie was and how people probably couldn’t even recognize his original characters as the same ones from the films, but still :(
In a world where almost all manga's art styles have started looking indistinguishable from each other, and animes seem to blur together with triangle mouths and extreme close ups on giant shimmering eyes in order to convey emotions (cheap to animate yay!), anything that goes the extra mile is to be treasured. So bless Science Saru for not just bringing Masamune Shirow's og style to life but also fucking going the extra mile and exaggerating it even more!
yaaaaay :)

I always thought Reddit was a place where people could share things they created.A few days ago I posted one of my original paintings. People loved it. We had wonderful conversations about art, emotions, and how everyone saw something different in the same sunset.
About two hours later I was permanently banned from r/MadeMeSmile for “self-promotion.”
I accepted that different communities have different rules. But then something even stranger happened.Soon afterward, a moderator from r/pics started going through my account. Not just the new post—many of my older painting posts disappeared as well. One after another. Then I was permanently banned there too.
Maybe it was the same moderator. Maybe it wasn’t. I honestly don’t know.
What surprised me wasn’t even the ban itself. It was realizing how much power individual moderators have over what millions of people are allowed to see. One decision can erase years of posts from a community and instantly cut off your ability to participate, even if those posts had been happily sitting there for months or years.I’m not saying moderators shouldn’t have rules. Communities need moderation. But it does make you wonder where the line is between protecting a community and allowing a single interpretation of the rules to completely reshape what people can share.
The funny part?
I wasn’t advertising anything in those posts. I wasn’t posting prices or asking anyone to buy anything. I was simply sharing my original paintings because I enjoy discussing art with strangers from around the world.
Anyway…
Here’s the painting that apparently caused all the trouble. 🎨
can't believe i haven't told you guys about my bell ringing lessons. i am learning to ring church bells. why? because it's sick as fuck. and also i get a lot of joy from being a dirty little sinner ringing gods doorbells
the cafe i work at is part of my local abbey and the average age of the bell ringers there is about 70 so the head bell ringer dude is making it his life's mission to bring that down by recruiting the entire cafe. he also thinks i don't have a life (correct) and so decided i needed a hobby (correct) and now i pull a rope for an hour a week while gossiping
also head bell ringer dude casually dropped one lesson that his ex wife stabbed him once, and then never followed through on that fun bit of information apart from to tell me they didn't get divorced until like 10 years later so. i also keep going in the hopes that one day he will fill me in on the rest of this
genuinely he would do numbers on tumblr dot com he's wild
Sorry I just gotta
The art of change ringing is peculiar to the English, and, like most English peculiarities, unintelligible to the rest of the world. To the musical Belgian, for example, it appears that the proper thing to do with a carefully tuned ring of bells is to play a tune upon it. By the English campanologist, the playing of tunes is considered to be a childish game, only fit for foreigners; the proper use of bells is to work out mathematical permutations and combinations. When he speaks of the music of his bells, he does not mean musician’s music – still less what the ordinary man calls music. To the ordinary man, in fact, the pealing of bells is a monotonous jangle and a nuisance, tolerable only when mitigated by remote distance and sentimental association... His passion – and it is a passion – finds its satisfaction in mathematical completeness and mechanical perfection, and as his bell weaves her way rhythmically up from lead to hinder place and down again, he is filled with the solemn intoxication that comes of intricate ritual faultlessly performed.
- Dorothy Sayers, The Nine Tailors (1934)
Like everyone who accidentally absorbed it in the course of a detective novel, I’ve been lowkey fascinated by English change ranging for a long time, possibly because of this 90-year-old reference to THE RITUALS ARE INTRICATE. This whole passage is so funny to me that I practically have it memorised. Have literally tried to listen on YouTube to work out what the fuck the loadbearing Grandsire Triples are. You go OP have FUN
I DO THIS! we ring at 2 different towers (the only ones on this island) and one of them has the oldest set of change ringing bells in Australia and has lots of sepia portraits and panoramas on the wall. Usually towers have very interesting and tight staircases to get up to the ringing rooms.
Grandsire Triples is very much real but I've never rung it because we usually only have enough ringers for Grandsire Doubles. Grandsire is my favourite method actually - as far as I know it's one of the oldest methods & it's different from the others because there are two hunt bells but which ones they are can change depending on when bobs and singles are called.
triples - 7 bells because there are 3 pairs of bells that can swap with one staying in the same place
doubles - 5 bells (same as above because 2 pairs + 1 extra)
from 3 up: singles, minimus, doubles, minor, triples, major, caters, royal, cinques, maximus
(this is one of the things i love about bells - you get silly words to know)
sometimes ringers decide to ring for over 3 hours without stopping or repeating any sequence of notes. that's a peal! it's based on the time it takes to ring every order of 7 notes (7!)
A lot of bellringers are old and retired and can use html so there are some pretty good resources out there BUT they will be completely incomprehensible at first.
you can look at Dove's Guide to see if there's a ringing tower near you. England has an insane number of towers, the US has a few, Australia has like 60. pakistan has 1 apparently
you should be able to find an email address pretty easily & arrange to go and visit some bells. they are friendly (in my experience! it could be nasty sometimes i don't know!?)
also? it is SO mathematical and patterns-based and no-one's tried to turn me Anglican. the God lives in the numbers and nowhere else. highly recommend it if you like hanging out with old people
please look. does this make you insane look at it
do you find this beautiful and helpful
How cool. I'm reading The Nine Tailors atm and it's answered my (completely unasked) question about why English bell ringing is Like That (unmusical, full of maths).
In my town we have a nice secular carillon that the piano nerds can go and punch out their little classical tunes on (apparently it's set out like a piano but instead of a keyboard you hit the levers with your fist).
Haven't made it to the end of the murder mystery yet, but at this point convinced that the bells themselves are the ones killing people. Beautiful, terrifying, absolutely bonkers 11/10.
Omg you guys [spoilers below for The Nine Tailors]
I finished the book and um...
at this point convinced that the bells themselves are the ones killing people.
I totally called it. Those murderous, murderous bells.
"Stop scrolling and please help me spread the word, because if I've landed on your page you're most likely either a black woman or someone who cares about black women and the simple phrase I'm about to share could help save a black woman's life.
Doctors are to black women what police officers are to black men. That may seem controversial but I believe it to be true and I speak from personal experience.
If you've seen this TikTok you know that a 2016 study showed that 50% of medical students and residents thought that black people couldn't feel pain the same as white people.
And we learned from this video that because of a 1999 study, to this day, there's a black correction factor for the creatinin levels in black people's kidneys, meaning we're less likely to recieve a kidney transplant if needed.
So if you go to a doctor, feel you aren't getting proper treatment or they refuse the treatment you've requested, say to them the following:
I will need you to document on record that you are refusing the treatment (or medicine) I've requested, and the reason you are doing so."
This works. I have used it in other situations. If medical staff have to document and take responsibility and be on the hook legally for doing shady shit they behave much differently.
If you weren’t already going to spread this advice because black women are at risk, then spread it because it’s applicable to everyone else as well, including you reading this.
But particularly women, and especially black women.
