Soft and Loud- Isaac + Damon
The drink wasn’t so bad the second time around. It still burnt his throat but he managed to stop himself choking, and he could feel an odd stirring in his stomach…like a fire. He was now starting to understand the appeal.
Isaac regretted asking Damon the faction question the moment he said it. It was too soon and too judgemental. Damon obviously liked being a mysterious stranger. But nothing could have prepared Isaac for Damon’s answer. After an initial wave of irritation which made Isaac wonder if Damon had something to hide, he faced him full on and revealed he was factionless. There was a devilish twinkle in his bright eyes, which made Isaac think his reaction was being tested. How was he supposed to react to something like that?
The factionless didn’t exactly have a good reputation, Isaac knew that. Wasn’t it true that even the Dauntless were more respected? Isaac remembered his fathers tales of their stealing, their wicked revolution ideas and how they spread disease with their dirty habits. But Damon didn’t seem like a dirty, desperate person. So Isaac discarded his fathers judgement just like he had discarded everything else from that man and turned towards Damon with a daring smile.
"So you’re part of the mystery group who want to bring down the factions?"
He hoped that Damon wouldn’t notice his split second of judgement. Isaac didn’t know why, but he wanted this strange man to like him.
He watched the boy drink, and was surprised he didn’t choke on it the second time. Fast learner, this kid. He took back the bottle, took another swig. “Well, it seems you at least seem to qualify better as a drinking buddy than I expected. Just don’t come running to me, complaining about the hangover, tomorrow, ok?”
One moment he thought Isaac was like all the others, one moment he could see a flicker of judgement in his eyes. The fear for what Damon would do to him, the disgust about what they all thought he was, but it was gone surprisingly fast. He didn’t want to be happy about it, he shouldn’t care a bit about what this kid thought of him, but still… It did hurt him, every time again when people just assumed he was the murderer they all thought him to be. “It was actually a surprise for you? But I didn’t scare you away, didn’t I? Good for you…” He asked him when it stayed silent for a while, when he apparently didn’t know what to say. What was there to say? No one who didn’t know him ever dared to ask why he ended up there, those who knew… well, they just made sure not to get in contact with him if possible.
Then he started laughing. “Me? Bringing down the system? I can’t say I’d hate it if that would happen, but I believe I’m working with the council this time. At least… I am part of it..” He didn’t wait for the reaction. “Don’t bother to hide your surprise that someone put me in that position. I’m still not completely over the shock of that happening myself.” He started to relax a bit, strangely feeling at ease sitting here, talking, even when he barely knew the guy. It did feel kind of familiar.
Isaac was starting to feel the effects of the drink. The fire was still there, but so was a thumping in his head and a slight blur in his vision. He blinked several times to try and focus. Despite his clear intolerance for the stuff though, Damon seemed to think he was his drinking buddy. Isaac suddenly felt a little nauseous as well, he wondered whether Damon would still like him if he puked on his shoes. Isaac looked over and noticed Damon's black leather and sharp clothing. Nope..if Isaac puked he was going to die.
"I feel funny" Isaac said, "what is in that stuff?" He realised how pathetic he sounded, but he needed to know whether the effects of the drink were permanent.
"You are pretty scary" Isaac said, wondering if Damon had wanted to scare him away.."But I don't judge people on their factions or their families, I judge their personality." Isaac attempted a smile and he could of sworn Damon smiled back a little. Or it could have been the vision spots of course.
Damon's next revelation openly took Isaac back a little, much more than the factionless statement. The government?! The council members in Abnegation had all been pensioners with beards and comfortable shoes. Damon was..well..different.
"How did you get it then?" Isaac was genuinely curious. It was a nice feeling.
Isaac listened as Allison opened up, surprised and very pleased. It was nice hearing her talk to him like a human being. It made him want to trust her, and also kiss her. But he ignored that part.
"Your Aunt?" Isaac was going to say some stupid thing about how odd it was to be afraid of a person, and ask whether she had had a bad christmas family dinner. But he could see genuine anxiety in her eyes as she spoke the name, and decided to not make her feel like an idiot. Also he would never judge someone for being afraid of their family.
"What did she do to you?" he asked gently.
He realised now, that he should be honest with her. Truly honest, not just Candor honest. And it felt okay.
"I’m only afraid of what I’ve left behind. My dad. He..lets just say his Abnegation selflessness only stretched to covering up what he did so others didn’t have to feel horrified that he hit his kids. At least in Dauntless the danger seems out in the open rather than hidden behind closed curtains."
Isaac bit his lip. Even hearing the words out loud felt painful. He wondered whether he should have told her. After all how do you react to something like that? He certainly didn’t know how to.
She listened as he spoke and sighed, heavy with the burden of emotional honesty. Things were falling apart all around them. Did anyone turn out okay anymore?
"I’m…" she trailed off, not sure how to respond to what he was sharing with her. "I’m so…sorry."
It sounded so empty, but what else could she say?
"That’s the thing about Dauntless. We’re all kind of monsters, but at least no one bothers to pretend otherwise."
Melodramatic? A little. But it certainly wasn’t a lie.
"My aunt…well no, she never hurt me. She was crazy, vicious…but she never hurt me. She died," she lowered her voice, "in an Erudite attack. And I don’t know why, and no one has any answers, and no one ever talks about it."
Isaac couldn't decide how he felt about this sharing session with Allison. On one hand, it was a relief to talk to someone, on the other...it seemed a bit heavy. He suddenly felt incredibly self conscious and was worried he was putting her off. He didn't want her to think he was some tragic loser.
"You're not a monster" Isaac didn't believe that for a second, he had met monsters. But he backtracked, as he didn't really know her well enough to tell her for sure.
"At least..you don't seem like one..unless you're planning to kill me when we finish the conversation" Isaac smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
The Erudite statement took him aback, another Erudite mystery? Something had been going on for years in that twisted faction, and apparently he wasn't the only one that thought so. The only thing he had which Allison didn't..was a way in. He had to try and help her.
"Well..." he hesitated, wondering what he was getting himself into "Would you like to see if we can find out?"
He held out his hand.

Isaac could see he was processing what had just happened, and surprisingly, he smirked a little. Isaac relaxed a little, maybe, as impossible as it seemed, this man respected people who stood up for themselves? Quite a rare occurence in any faction. Except Dauntless maybe.
He had a point about the being alone together thing, but to be honest Isaac was sick of being alone. He always yearned to be away from people but once he was his thoughts would creep up on him and claw at him like rabid animals. He no longer felt the panic he had felt before, and was intrigued by the black haired man. He was different from everyone else he had met, from the open hostility to the tactless mocking of the factions. Isaac suddenly thought about how much he would hate Abnegation.
Isaac still felt the burn of the whiskey in his throat, but his bold move seemed to have impressed the man. Although he picked up on the fact Isaac was not used to the substance, he introduced himself as Damon. Damon…it suited him. It reminded Isaac of Demon, and was a perfect fit for his foreboding image. Isaac sat down tentatively next to him.
"So Damon, what faction are you from?"
“Well?” He waited until Isaac would leave, until he would have the field for him alone again, but it didn’t look like the boy was going to do as Damon wanted. “Why don’t you just leave?” He wasn’t… one way or another Damon was convinced he wasn’t going to leave, he wasn’t going to let him drink in peace, let him get back to the good moments he had before this guy had stumbled over him. Well… nothing to do about that. After he had taken his bottle back, he sat down again, showing that he wasn’t going anywhere, that if Isaac wanted to be alone, he had to be the one to leave, to find another place. But he wasn’t. Like Damon had expected, he stayed here.
Maybe it wasn’t too bad. As long as he wasn’t going to tell him off, he wasn’t very much against having company at the moment. He had known worse days, he had known times he definitely didn’t want to see anyone, but this wasn’t one of those times. Isaac sat down as well, and now he knew he was definitely going to have company. He offered him the bottle again. “Well, Isaac… when you don’t seem to leave, the best thing you can do is drink along. Qualified or not.”
Then the inevitable question in this city came. Everyone always wanted to know in which box they could put you, so they would know what you would do, how you would react, what your values were, and he knew the reaction when his answer came. They pulled away, treated him like he was worthless. Which wasn’t very much untrue, but he still hated to hear that from others. “You’re in for a surprise, loner. Not one of them…” He shrugged. “I’m not from a faction, I’m from those out on the streets. Factionless.” He looked as Isaac, curious how he would react, how long it would take before he would leave him.

He felt his head again, but when he withdrew his hand without seeing any sign of blood, he decided that there was at least no physical damage there, except for a head ache. He didn’t know if that was due to the guy kicking him in the head or half the bottle of whiskey he had already drunk this morning, but blaming the kick in the head was easier. The boy was lying on the grass now, and looking at Damon like he never saw someone like him before. He was tall, but slim, a head full of blonde curls and he had a bewildered look on his face.
When he kept staring at Damon, the latter felt a bit uncomfortable. “What’s the matter, imbecile? Do I look like an alien to you or something like that?” He grabbed the bottle the boy gave him back, and immediately took a big gulp. He held up the bottle to the boy, without any intention of sharing. “Cheers…” Then he looked at the boy again. Somehow he seemed familiar as if he had seen him before, but he couldn’t find out how exactly. He must be around the age of Stefan, give or take a year. But Damon didn’t want to think about that, didn’t want to think about the brother he left behind, didn’t want to think about this boy either, but he was here, and didn’t seem to want to leave.
"Well… it seemed you have come to the wrong place to be alone. Hate to burst your bubble, loner, but this spot has already been taken." He sighed, annoyed that even at those short moments he did feel good, someone had to disturb him again. "Why are you looking at that bottle like that. Not used to seeing someone drinking?" He looked around, trying to remember where he was. "Candor? Ah, ok… you guys say enough bold things to each other without the help of alcohol, isn’t it?" He laughed, a short, sarcastic laugh.
Well… as you’re here anyway… what’s your name? Or do I have to keep calling you imbecile? Not that I care…”
Issac was shocked by the man’s open hostility. He had never met anyone like this before..not in any faction. He looked only a few years older than Isaac but seemed like he had seen too much so for so little years. Isaac wondered whether he should have stayed away.
Still, despite his fear, a little bubble of defiance flared up in him. A bubble that had appeared often in Abnegation but he has automatically repressed. And before he could even acknowledge properly that he was free to express how he liked, he had already blurted out something probably stupid.
"I am Candor and I’m sorry but the last time I looked you didn’t have control of all the fields on the borders. If I want to come here to be alone too, I will."
Isaac then, in a panic that he was going to be murdered, decided to screw it and do something completely spontaneous. He grabbed the bottle out of the man’s hand and swigged once before handing it back. It tasted like acid in his throat but he felt choking would ruin his sudden arrogant stand off so he gulped it down. He then looked back up at the man, preparing for the worst.
"I’m Isaac."
He saw the shock in the boy’s eyes, and was somehow amused by what he had achieved, just by being his normal, blunt self. Lashing out to people had become his automatic reaction after having to survive on his own, after finding out he did better on his own, after deciding that if they threw him out, he wouldn’t need anyone to get by. In the last eight years he had perfected the art of pushing people away by just a few words or sentences like nobody else in this city.
What happened next did surprise him, even when he was near Candor, even when he could have expected that of someone who lived there. A small smile played around his lips. He loathed those who talked back a bit less than those who just bent their heads and walked away, and the frank tone of this boy made it clear that he wasn’t planning on leaving anytime soon. Not that he was suddenly going to get friendly or something like that. He had probably already forgotten how to do that.
"Listen up… we can’t be here alone together, boy. That way we both won’t be alone anymore. Even when you’re not Erudite, you should be able to get that?" He sighed. "And seeing that I was here first, I’d advise you to get lost." The guy seemed to be amazed by his own words, starting to panic more and more when he looked at Damon. He took another swig out of his bottle, before he suddenly felt it taken out of his hands.

"Although I could use a drinking buddy now and then. I don’t think you classify. You can never be allowed to drink already." He took another swig. "I’m Damon."

Isaac’s reply was cut off as he desperately pushed himself off the other person and fell onto the grass. He looked up and now the sun had passed he could see he had very delicately plummeted into a man who had been lying in the grass. He was bigger than Isaac and his muscles bulged from under his shirt. His hair was jet black and his eyes were a bright, intense blue. Made more intense by the fact they had a murderous expression.
Isaac would have guessed he was Dauntless. The leather clothing and bottle of bourbon lying a few feet away from him didn’t exactly fit in with someone from any other faction. Abnegation saw alcohol as frivolous, Amity didn’t like it as it could disturb the peace, it would interfere with the Erudite’s motor skills, and with Candor it tended to lose you a lot of friends as it would unleash a constant stream of truths you would rather keep to yourself. Either he was Dauntless…or something else?
Isaac suddenly felt very intimidated by this mysterious man with the oddly pale complexion. It was as if his face had never been exposed to sunlight at all. Isaac didn’t know whether he should leave, and maybe that would diffuse the man’s obvious anger at him, or whether to stay and attempt to make amends. Maybe he should stay. After all he didn’t want to make enemies in his first week; especially a Dauntless. He swallowed his fear and held out to the man the bottle that had fallen from his grasp.
"Here" Isaac said "I..I didn’t mean to fall over you. I was trying to be alone too."

"Aren’t you guys supposed to be fearless? So, if you don’t mind me asking, what keeps you awake at night Allison? Ill share my bad dreams if you share yours."
Isaac hesitated, not wanting to seem pushy. He could see her defences going up and didn’t want to alienate the first person he really liked since he moved. He diverted back to her other question, choosing his words carefully so not to reveal too much.
"I came from Abnegation- I should say I guess that I’m not used to REAL safety. Abnegation did a good job of pretending you were safe. Although to be honest, I’m not sure anywhere is truly safe."
Allison smiled up at him. So this was…new. She liked this. She liked him, although in what way was unclear. Maybe that was okay.
Maybe she could try something else new; maybe she could be honest.
"Well…when I was little? I was afraid of dumb stuff - the dark, heights…all that. But I made myself get over because that’s what you do in Dauntless, you make yourself get over things. But these days…these days it’s my aunt. I still - I have nightmares about her. A lot."
She confessed in a rush. She felt lighter in a way, she did, but she could also feel herself closing up, feel herself growing anxious.
And what was that other thing he had said? That no where was safe? Well, he was right about that.
"As far as the city goes, you’re right. No where is safe. But has it ever been? Besides," she continued with a smirk, "if you’re worried about danger, you should’ve stayed away from Dauntless."

By the way… if we wander into an entire battalion of enemies, I plan on giving up my noble quest for justice and running away screaming like a girl.
Do you have any experience with weapons? Surely in Amity you’re not encouraged to fight. If we get into a fight, how useful are you going to be on a scale from superman to curled up in a ball.
I’ll leave the screaming to you, but at least I’m a good runner…
I guess I’ve never been in a fight before. Unless Football counts? But I think I’d at least defend myself. I just don’t know if it will be useful…

Fantastic, we can fail at being heroic together. I'm glad you're not all noble and righteous though, it would make the conversation much more dull.
It's okay, I've never been in a fight either. Unless its a battle of wits. In which case I'd still be pretty useless at that too. I don't know what we're walking into, hopefully its not a fight...but I doubt they were just giving us free arrows.
I can think of a few. Someone finding out something horrid about someone they loved or trusted. Or finding out something about themselves. Another smaller example is if you fancy someone of course. That truth is very daunting, especially if the feelings aren’t reciprocated. Actually thats rubbish..I .I have no idea what i’m saying. I’m going to blame my head.
I’m glad you don’t find me annoying. Ill admit I’ve been with worse people when being attacked by arrows. And I’m sure they’re not for you. If they were, surely they would have tried to hurt you before now? You shouldn’t worry. Once I leave I’m still intending to find our sudden attackers. I mean…(hesitates) you could..maybe..come with me? If you want? I definitely do not find you uninteresting. And besides, how am I going to survive without you to tend my wounds?
All of those situations sound pretty terrifying, and I’m very fortunate to say that I’ve experienced them. And as for feelings, I can’t say I’ve ever really felt anything but love for the large family that is my faction. Feelings are always reciprocated then, and it’s very comforting. I’m sure that liking someone who might not like you back would be an awfully big risk. But, anyway, how is your head? Does it hurt at all?
I’m glad you don’t see me as someone who’s bad company when getting attacked. [Laughs] I really do hope they’re not looking for me. [Pauses and looks up] I mean, it’s not like they have a reason to look for me. And, um, I’ll… I’ll think about it.
