ohhhhh my god im having such bad writers block for my fic bc I've written everything I started this fic to write and now i have to do some filler stuff before I can make them kiss but I just want them to be kissing already.
if anyone has any suggestions for the first buckley-diaz trip to the zoo with theo, I'm all ears. so far I've written that Chris is showing theo around like buck used to do for him, and then someone's going to do the Christmas elf thing and tell eddie he has a lovely family.
I love you so dearly my buddie fanfic authors. one small note: eddie canonically wears tighty whities, not boxers (which i personally find is the best character choice they've ever made for him), unless of course he pulls on buck's underpants when he gets out of his bed - that's perhaps even better.
I know that in a lot of fics and headcanons people write that the 118 basically know eddie and buck are in love with each other before they tell them or sometimes before they even know themselves, but honestly I'm not sold on whether that would be canon. bear with me, idk if this is a hot take lol
I've had friends in my group who were really close, liked each other and made a move, all without me knowing. now, when I finally got told about it, everything sort of clicked and I understood everything they'd been doing and how close they were, but up until then I never wanted to speculate about their relationship. after all, they're my friends and I respect them enough to take them at their word, if that makes sense. maybe it's just me, but the idea of thinking that they might be queer when they've told me they're straight, or that they have a crush when they've said they don't, just feels too much like I'm betraying their trust.
going back to buddie, I think for this reason the 118 probably hasn't looked too far into their relationship, because to them it's the buck and eddie normal, after all. and, aside from his relationship with buck, Eddie hasn't given them any solid indication that he's not straight. so even though they might have passing thoughts about whether theres something more there, I don't think it's ever actually solid enough for them to actually believe they're in love. i think when buddie does go canon, they'll be surprised when they find out, then re-evaluate. this does make me a bit sad though bc I am very partial to a buddie bet fic.
(not sure if anyone's read the dark artifices trilogy but to me it's sort of like emma and julian: best friends for years, constantly cruising that platonic/romantic boundary, but their friendship is so fundamental and entrenched in their friend group that nobody thought twice until they told them. and when they do find out, I think it's Diana who says something like how she was surprised, then immediately understood, and knew how right it felt.)
ofc im not talking about the queen herself, Maddie "it wouldn't be so crazy" Buckley Han. I'm also undecided on whether Chris knows. I think he might want it to be true more than he knows it is.

Can I say something that might be a bit out of left field? I don't think eddie would confide in Hen once he figures out he's queer, for a few reasons.
1. hen has said before that she felt comfortable with (or at least sure of) her sexuality since she was a teen. so while she knows what it's like to be in the community and have a parent that wasnt accepting, she doesn't have the experience of repressing that for so many years. the only other person who has gone through the process of self discovery in their 30s is buck, but obviously when you're in love with him coming to him for advice about that poses a problem.
2. his queerness is directly related to buck, and i don't think there's a world in which anyone in their family circle wouldn't immediately connect that eddie - attracted to men equals eddie - in love with buck, even if he hasn't accepted it himself.
3. building off 2, I think hen is too close to both buck and eddie for him to view her as a 3rd party that he can go to for help. she's just too ingrained in the 118 team, and i for one know that often it's easier to share secrets with people you see less often or are less close with, because the stakes are lower and you aren't constantly reminded of the secret or the fact they know it.
personally, I think eddie would (maybe 'should' is more accurate) go to Athena. in discovering he's gay, he'd likely feel massive amounts of guilt for his relationship with Shannon, and Athena, having been the Shannon in the relationship before, can understand and help him through. she was witness to Michael's growth and happiness after accepting his sexuality and i think she'd be able to help him understand and blame himself less.
not to mention the show has been pairing them up a lot more so they have a good rapport.

I don't need Buddie to go canon in season 10. I'm patient. I can keep enjoying the slow burn. Two things I would like, however, are:
- Overt, unambiguous progress in Eddie's sexuality realization
- At least one inappropriately long hug.
the slowburn can be as slow as it likes, we just need the burn part too!!! more buddie content to fuel us and the show!!!

The concept of buddie canon but nothing changes. Like, theyâre together, but theyâre still them. Their relationship, for all intents and purposes is the same. Only now they kiss and they cuddle and whatnot. Now they say âI love youâ out loud.
see this is why i believe buddie has literally BEEN canon. even if they haven't realised they're in love or said it out loud.......i fear they have been for years. whether or not it goes 'canon', buddie has always been real and always will be.

Buck is not Christopher's dad.
He just isn't. I see their relationship the same way I saw Bobby's relationship with Athena's kids. It exist is the stepparent realm which is objectively different. I think he absolutely is a parental figure to Chris in the same way Bobby was, however without the official implication of a relationship with Eddie.
That doesn't make their bond any less special and I hate to see people eradicate Chris from the narrative but I also think there is nuance. Like Eddie is still a single dad at the end of the day.
I think Buck is insecure or at least unsure of where exactly he stands in rehargs to fatherhood (with Chris because his relationship with Eddie is undefined and with Theo for obvious reasons). The comment Harry made about kids to Buck in 9x18 had some of the fandom angry but I don't think that is meant to erase Chris, its purpose is to foreground a storyline of Buck fully coming into himself as a parent next season. Because helping raise Chris doesn't mean he fully understands fatherhood. He hasn't experienced it in its entirety. (Also we have no clue who else in the 118 knows about Eddie's will).
I'm not saying Buck hasn't stepped up for Chris. He has gone far beyond what any "friend" would do for their friends kid. He has always had Eddie's back and been there for Chris (with Eddie and when Eddie couldn't) but I think the next season opens a new door for Buck's journey of fatherhood.
Fatherhood is days and nights and doctors meeting and school meetings. It is A LOT.
The same situation applies to Eddie when he returns from Afghanistan. Of course he is Chris's biological father but he wasn't acting as a dad at that point. The parallel between Buddie is coming in for Buck stepping in to a parental role for Theo at the same age Eddie had to really step up and be present for Chris.
Buck has been an absolute supporting force for Eddie but as far as we are concerned he hasn't had serious responsibility for Chris. Yes he is in Eddie's will and there has been many instances where he has given Chris guidance or taken care of him for the day BUT he isn't a caregiver. The closest we get to this is after Eddie is shot but this is a temporary situation. I know fics and fanon love to have Buck join the PTA or take Chris to the doctors but that isn't canon (and in a lot of instances actually just undermining Eddie's own fatherhood and capability but I wont get into that). I would say Buck currently functions in a godfather kind of role (connected to being a prospective legal guardian if Eddie was to croak it).
I know fanon loves to exaggerate Buck's parental role to make him "equal" to Eddie but it is just so unneccessary...
Chris and Buck have such a special bond!! I hope we continue to see it!! You'll hear from me if we don't. And hopefully he will officially become a stepdad going forward. Ultimately Chris is 15/16?? Who knows with this show anymore. Obviously he adores Buck but even then if Buddie was to get married I truly don't think he would start calling Buck anything different. Maybe he would refer to him as his dad in the same way May did, which I think would be super sweet but teenagers changing their everyday language like that is uncommon.
I also don't think its necessarily needed for Buck to adopt Chris. Could there be a sweet plot about that (and Eddie adopting Theo)? Of course but that is not necessary to me. What is more important is showing their bond. I loveeee a positive stepparent / stepchild dynamic.
None of this is about biological connection before anybody comes at me! BECAUSE BUCK IS ALOS NOT THEO'S DAD! He is currently an emergency foster parent. Yes he is the biological father but he hasn't become his dad yet. For all we know he might be Mr Poop forever (I actually think it could be really dynamic to not have Theo call Buck dad either and could continue the shows conversation around the found family but don't let me ramble - also I do not expect that to be how it plays out and would cry if Theo did).
Theo's relationship to Buddie is different because he is so young (and therefore a bit more malleable in his perception of them). If Buck and Eddie were to get together at the very start of Buck fostering of course then Eddie might exist in a more specifically parental role than Buck does for Christopher. But this is all speculative...I think that the Buckley-Diaz dynamic going forward is complex!
I think this unsettles people because that throws off peoples sense of equilibrium BUT I think its ok for kids to have different dynamics with their parents (or stepparents)!
If Chris had complicated feelings about that it would be even more realistic! What isn't complicated is the fact that Buck loves Chris and their bond doesn't require rigid familial titles to be valid.
I don't know I feel like some people (more so on Twitter) are almost pitting Chris and Theo against each other...they can coexist!
I find it interesting that some people are so adamantly against the Theo plot when Buddie has ALWAYS been a couple that involves one of the pair having a child...like I don't understand people who cannot stand the kid plot when Buddie has always included a kid (I can ofc understand people not a huge fan of the donor part). I do however, understand (and am included!) in the group that worries about how Eddie and Christopher remain important to the plot. ESPECIALLY because so much of Eddie's plot has been fixated on his role as a single dad and now Buck is also occupying that archetype that used to be unique to Eddie on the show.
And then I feel like I see certain people talking about Buddie and Theo, without including Chris which is so so upsetting (don't get me started on how certain people in the fandom characterise or portray Chris, that is a WHOLE different issue and one I don't feel entitled to discuss, but yeah this fandom has some crazy ableism...)
As a whole I actually think the idea of two single dads in their mid thirties getting into a gay relationship and raising a family together on network television would be so monumental!! The family having a complex dynamic that can explore the intricacies of a blended family could be so interesting! We've seen this blended family with the Grant's and Bobby and I would love for the show to continue exploring this!!
So I'm letting the show cook for now...of course I will have more thoughts next season. There is a lot to consider...however I more than anything hope to see Eddie and Chris's relationship itself to get screen time and this not to just become the Buck show (I'm still mad about the offical insta's fathers day post kind of snubbing them...)
I just can anticipate a lot of angry people when Buck's arc is stepping into fatherhood next season...but that is what he is doing. Because he hasn't been a father to Chris in a full capacity and that is ok!!!
I'm so glad someone else has said this bc even though Buck loves Chris like a dad loves his son, that's not their relationship. what especially gets me in fics is where Eddie will randomly say 'yeah Buck you're Chris's other dad!!' because it just vehemently takes me out of it and reminds me that I am in fact reading fan fiction lol!!
Sometimes I remember a lone star plot and I'm just left wondering if Rob Lowe really is popular enough amongst the wine moms to keep that show going for 5 whole seasons.
no bc why did he have a whole storyline about TAMING a HORSE that literally went NOWHERE just so he could be the cool cowboy western horse guy (except he's from California and New York btw) it was so funny
Literally the only complaint about the Theo arc I had when it was first theorised was that Buck is such a girldad to me.
this was also my thing BUT I think it's so cute that theo is a mini buck so that buck can give him all the love he should have gotten as a kid and realise that you can love your kid unconditionally and they don't have to 'make it easy' for you

Eddie isnât even aware of himself or his feelings. Its clear he has repressed a lot of his identity and his turn back to the church further amplifies his fear in accepting himself.
Let my boys get over their traumas first.
If they gave you people buddie immediately you wouldnât be happy. Its a lot more natural to do it this way instead of forcing them into a relationship.
The show isnât over, calm down.
And its clear that ABC are working toward it. Fox didnât even have that many Ryan and Oliver interview panels and ABC have had LOADS (the Buddie panel guys.)
It appears to be happening at some point (from interviews) and the actors want it to happen.

it's only been a real actual slow burn (as in it could feasibly happen and is actually in our reach) since the move to abc so really it's only been 3 seasons which STARTED with one of them realising he's BI!! we're so locked in don't even worry
