Somebody should make a resource management sim game about a veterinary hospital.
You’d start out with a little clinic and a budget, and get to choose which equipment you invest in, like Xray or Ultrasound, what types of surgical equipment and lab set up you have, etc and just one vet.
Your vet gains experience by the caseload they see.
You get to set your opening hours, and basic prices. Occasionally ‘special’ cases will pop up that either ask you to work for free/goodwill, or are aggressive clients, or otherwise unusual where you can make a choice of action. You also get to see assorted comments pop up from social media about your practice, whether the vets are likable, whether you cost too much etc.
Over time, if your practice is profitable, you can hire more vets and staff, buy more equipment, expand the building or hire a locum so your sole vet can have a break.
Hired vets and staff have assorted stats detailing their experience, interests, skills, mental health and burnout. They might even have other stats like ‘alcoholic’ or ‘bird phobia’. Sometimes they will get injured or need to take parental leave. Manage them well and everything’s good. Manage them badly and they quit, one way or another.
It would be interesting to see a game from a management and behind the scenes reality side rather than the ‘save all the cute animals’ side of things that we usually get. Might also help the general public understand what happens when you’re constantly told you’re too expensive, regardless of your costs.
I think that’s a good idea. It’s an entertaining enough concept, and I can certainly see that it could be genuinely educational.
I support this in theory.
In practicality, I had a vet med computer game as a kid where all you had to do was diagnose and treat, and I never got past like the 6th patient because it was a Dalmatian that got hit by a car and you couldn’t save it. I tried like 20 times and never picked up the game again. I have no idea if I could hack the even harder side of the gig.
Oo, good point. Hmmm. You could probably cut down on realism in terms of death and some terrible things you see (there have been a couple of cases burned into my memory) and still have it serve the purpose of humanising the veterinary industry.
I’m just genuinely confused that so many people think vets are rolling in money and overcharging for funsies, it’s very disturbing.
I wouldn’t have *any* details of cases, or absolute minimum.
I’d envision this from a practice management point of view, not from a vet point of view.
Not so much individual cases, but more of a great big overview.
Clients say clinic should be open longer. Extend your opening hours! Watch staff get stressed and burned out and their mental health plummet!
Offer staff more money and try to hire more to counteract this, suddenly need to charge more for procedures! For everything.
Public complaining that your prices are too high and vets should work for free/cheap, squeeze everything as low as you can and the public still complain. Vets get more stressed, their likability drops, social media comments get worse which reduces new clients coming in, which reduces volume of procedures which weren’t profitable anyway…
So not focusing at all on an individual vet’s day. Focusing on the practice, on the people actually in it, instead of the animals for a change.
All the vet games I’ve seen have been shiny “look at the animals” focused, I was thinking something more “look at the people”.
I reckon it’d work (as a concept that’s entertaining, there certainly seem to be similar games)! Not that I’m a game designer. :P
