I made an experimental lo-fi instrumental hip-hop groovefest to thaw out your frozen winter hearts. Come one, come all and warm your hands by the vibes!
New London artist Bo Rocha has brewed up her second single, Angel Eyes, and the results are nothing short of alluring. Bo’s vocal and tantalizing beats cast a mesmerizing, entrancing spell that continues to pull you deeper and deeper into its swirling rhythms and melodies. While bringing to mind components of MØ and Lana Del Rey, Angel Eyes separates Bo Rocha from the pack and establishes her as a full fledged force in her own right.Â
Mating Ritual explodes in our eardrums with the instantly satisfying candy that is I Wear Glasses.  The new wave pop track is rich with glittering synths and guitar and combined with Ryan Marshall Lawson’s upbeat vocals (and handclaps!) has all the hookiness of a proper single.  With a danceable spirit so light and energizing, I Wear Glasses screams top down convertible cruising on a sun drenched summer day - and boundless freedom. The future looks bright for Mating Ritual.
With a shard of melancholic southern gospel, Harrison Brome spills ghostly, lightly distorted vocals over a hip hop beat in Fill Your Brains and the result is a contemporary trip hop diamond. Adopting a sort of romanticized wasteland aesthetic reminiscent of Gorillaz, Brome’s vocal gently cries out over the track, with a falsetto that soars over minimal production while slowly sinking below the horizon in a bleak yet beautiful delivery.  At just 19, the Vancouver native shows tremendous vocal talent and a skilled ear for haunting melodies and production.Â
Future Bass is an exciting genre for many reasons, but one of the most prominent is its ability to fuse true Pop songwriting with the niche, electronic-heavy production of dance music. Effectively marrying Future Bass with Pop R&B, Dutch producer Michael Miller’s Never Let Go (feat. Wade) is a finely tuned product of the expanding world of Bass Music. Wade’s light and airy vocals float over soft pads, until culminating in a falsetto-infused release over an explosive lead synth that takes cues from dubstep.Â
RKCB, aka Riley Knapp and Casey Barth, have put their foot forward with the dreamy, underwater vibes of their first single, Ignite.  The Electro R&B track gleams with soulful falsetto vocals, tight hooks, and entrancing and immersive electronic production that culminate in a weightless, transcendent chorus that plants Jhene Aiko’s Souled Out album artwork at the front of the mind.Â
Fletcher’s new single War Paint has been on repeat for the majority of this past week and I still can’t get enough!  Blending contemporary Top 40 with folk in both image and musicality, War Paint comes off as a super optimized (and actually good) version of Hilary Duff’s 2014 single All About You. A thunderous beat, tight hooks, banjo ornamentation, and explosive chorus fuse together to deliver an absolutely infectious power pop monstrosity. In fact, the track is so polished, I’m pondering Fletcher’s potential mindie status, even though her official Facebook page lists her as unsigned. Her vocals put her somewhere between Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, and with what she’s given us so far, I hope to see big things for Fletcher in the coming year.Â
Catch & Release (Deepend Remix) has been garnering some buzz online and with good reason! This track goes DEEP while remaining light and refreshing - an accomplishment to be celebrated in the realm of deep house. Deepend’s synths are warm and comforting and Matt Simon’s ever-present vocal keeps the track crisp and breezy. Â
Yates instantly stands out with his third effort Virtue.  The verse is catchy, the chorus harmony commands your attention in all its hookiness, and its accompanied electronic ornamentations bring Yates’ sound to a very engaging level. Â
Stunningly beautiful and effortlessly immersive, newcomer SLO puts her foot forward with the ethereal Shut Out of Paradise, a downtempo electronic pop ballad that provides us a direct line to the London singer’s emotion-drenched voice and lyrics.  Utilizing trip hop influenced production and smart and tasteful implementation of vocal pitch shifting, SLO pours her heart out into our ears and…it’s a gorgeous thing.Â
Oh and it’s a free download as a redbook quality .wav file so gettit.
Leading up to his debut EP Damn Sue, the songwriter-turned-artist Sam Dew has released one single per day from the 31st-4th, giving us a strong taste of the sonic treats we are to expect from this new face. Newly signed to RCA, Dew demonstrates much promise through his soulful and out-standing falsetto vocals, and fresh electro R&B production - Desperately offers up a perfect concoction of both, exposing a concentrated dose of what this exiting talent has to offer. Following is Air, an upbeat and horn accented framework for Dew’s vocals and a catchy hook.  If you’re thirsty for more, fear not, the rest of Damn Sue is available April 7th.
With a bit of Justin Timberlake flair, Jarryd James delivers his debut single Do You Remember, an R&B/Rock influenced Pop record made absolutely delicious by fresh production and the Aussie singer’s cool, breathy falsetto/chest voice doubled vocal.Â
Kodak to Graph puts an extremely fresh spin on the standard EDM buildup/drop format in the future bass gem IAMANTHEM. In one of the most unique and striking drops I have ever heard, the talented producer generates a wonderfully eccentric vibe with his beautifully crafted stuttering lead synth, frosted to perfection with subtle pitch bending at the end of each phrase. In terms of EDM/Bass music, Kodak to Graph gives us a prime example of less truly being more, in a scene where most producers are intent on screaming in your face over a drum track.
It’s One Direction meets Mumford & Sons! Newcomer band Cahoots brings us contemporary boy band pop fused with folk and indie vibes - a perfect combo for the current state of the industry. No Money brings to mind pop/folk band Sheppard, who is currently seeing more and more success, and I’d reckon Cahoots is not too far behind.  The track is quite catchy, and the band is currently unsigned despite a glaringly obvious major label sound, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see big things from them soon.
The Staves are anticipating the release of their major label debut If I Was on the Warner imprint Nonesuch Records, and leading the album is the undeniably infectious folk-pop knock out of the park, Black & White. The trio’s pop songwriting skills shine brightly through the track’s folk framework, particularly in the 2nd verse and the chorus, and the vocal harmonies are truly captivating. Great hook. If I Was is available March 31st.
