Last call for Wiley! A week from today, my Wiley the Whale knitting pattern will no longer be offered for free on @hi.ravelry. I want to continue to offer free knitting patterns, but some are just too precious and honestly personal to me (as silly as that may sound). The positive response over this pattern has honestly helped to keep me going through the uncertainty around working from home and decreased human interaction. Feedback is more important to me than ever. Thank goodness for online communities! The pattern is available at the link in my profile, along with some other resources. Free for seven more days! Get it while you can. #freeknittingpattern #ravelry #whale #🐋 #🐳 #marinelife #Wiley #WileytheWhale #stuffedanimal #knitting #instaknit #knitstagram #knit #knitalldayeveryday #pattern #knittingpattern #knitwhale #fiberart https://www.instagram.com/p/CDl2zGwD2wS/?igshid=1aibgsx63ydl4
Friends, it has been A WEEK. Our ac went out during one of the hottest weeks thus far (since fixed), I pinched a nerve which caused shooting pains through my arm on Friday (now easing up), and I received some news that is sure to make my work life challenging for at least the next couple of months. Listen. Change can be beneficial, but oftentimes, especially in the beginning, it's confusing. I feel so lucky to have this hobby of knitting that I can delve into, but this interest is also morphing. Like many right now, the presentation aspect just doesn't excite me as much and I no longer feel the need to document every single item I make. This is a positive change, I think. I've been wanting to design and knit this soap stasher for quite some time, in an effort to help me cut back on plastic soap bottles. I'm finding more enjoyment from actually using the things I make, which is another positive change. #knitting #soapbag #summerknitting #knitbag #eyeletstitch #instaknit #knitstagram #knit #knityearround #lavendarsoap #bathtime #scrubadubdub #knittingpattern #cotton #reusablebag #starsoapstasher #functionalknitting #lowimpact #lowwaste #change https://www.instagram.com/p/CCz67NbDyMI/?igshid=y932yiv9tfz9
Popping in to show off Wiley (full name Wiley the Whale). The knitting pattern to make her is still free on @hi.ravelry. I'm pretty overwhelmed by the positive response to her. I hope those who have taken advantage of this cuddly whale pattern are enjoying it. Until now, I hadn't shared much with her because I've been trying to focus more on the ones I love, mental and physical health, managing stress, and expanding my learning and openness to change. Sharing things I make here is lovely, but I acknowledge that a part of the process is rooted in self-involvement and insecurity. Well. I'm thankful for the time and space to examine "flexing". And I do my best to keep this ugly side of my social media presentation in check. I'm in admiration of those forgoing social media at this time and I want to extend compassion to those who are struggling (not that these things are related). It feels difficult to offer words of hope without feeling disingenuous. This is definitely a time of change, and a time of examination. Let's dump the things that aren't working for us and keep the things that do. #summer2020 #WileytheWhale #whale #knitting #knittingpattern #knitwhale #Wiley #knit #knitstagram #instaknit #diy #stuffedanimal #❤#humpbackwhale #examination #2020 #change #struggle #findingyourjoy https://www.instagram.com/p/CB5-iqlDMeF/?igshid=1x9l85hio8zo
I know I post so many freaking pictures of my coffee table but I finished knitting this table runner a little while ago and never posted the completed project. Also pictured: a slate shingle that used to rest atop a chapel in Louisiana, and a sage stick to help calm me down before meditations. #knitting #intarsia #garterstitch #instaknit #knit #knitstagram #yarn #purples #blues #whatevercolorsyousee #goodchoices #tablerunner #coffeetable #sage #slate #repurposed #shadows #morninglight https://www.instagram.com/p/B_klvkDjoq6/?igshid=1ur51s1uyymnl
I gifted some old craft supplies I would use back when I knit jewelry from elastic cord to the family of a nine-year-old who is using jewelry making to connect with her friends during this challenging time. It. Felt. Great. Was going through my craft arsenal this morning only to find I had even more jewelry cord tucked away that I could have gifted her. 🤦🏽♀️ Oh well. I can only laugh about my previous craft hoarding tendencies. These little victories are to be savored. #crafting #knitting #gifts #quarantine #weekends #jewelrymaking #jewelry #handmadebeads #handmade #diy #makingstuff #jewelrysupplies #pickup https://www.instagram.com/p/B_NvOD3DcZ8/?igshid=1fbg9x07l881j
Whale hello! I'm being intentional about sharing fewer completed knitwear photos, and more work in progress shots because the finished product is maybe 1 out of the ~7386008712 things I love about knitting. I'm also thinking a bit about creativity versus perfectionism and how perfectionist tendencies can just exacerbate low confidence and self esteem. I like working hard and giving people the best of what I have, but sometimes I just need to be basic, be vulnerable, and be bad at things to have fun. I know I am far from perfect, which is where this perfectionist drive comes from, but sometimes acceptance and self love are more important than a drive to be better... whatever that even means ? ... I have had a lot of time to think while quarantining. And something I do want to be more intentional about is having fun, in small and big ways. Is anyone else feeling this way? Anyway, this whale in progress has been a ton of fun to work. I'm excited to have a snuggly stuffed whale once complete, but I'm in no rush to finish it. Also, I think whales are the coolest. #whale #knitting #knit #knittersofinstagram #stuffedanimal #wip #whaleinprogress #perfectionisamyth #youareenough #cetacean #humpback #rightwhale #bluewhale #finwhale #🐋 #🐳 https://www.instagram.com/p/B_DFi-zjZ8T/?igshid=1e24bm9nwztrw
This is not easy. Creativity is helping me get through this uncertain, very serious and overwhelmingly saddening experience. I'm trying out projects that one would typically associate with childhood. I painted a rock the other day with only two paint colors (my lack of usable acrylic paints was an interesting quarantine discovery). I'm also thinking up plans for a bird feeder with leftover craft supplies. Possibly my favorite project has been two projects in one: a felted knit bowl. I've always loved crafts as a means of relaxing, but now these activities seem essential for me. They have been a brilliant comfort. And while I have made some things, I'm admittedly less productive overall with less structure in my routine, but that's alright. I am deeply saddened by the lives lost. My heart goes out to those who have lost a family member, their job, those who are working extra hard, those without a home, those struggling mentally... I recognize how lucky I am to have a supportive work culture, or even A JOB. And my family, so far, is doing fine. As for staying inside, it feels frustrating and stifling at times, even as someone who loves my home and loves being there. Lifelong plans are getting cancelled. People's routines and lives are being upended. And it can be immensely disheartening to not have access to things that help us thrive and allow us to contribute. This has been, and will continue to be, a major learning experience for me. It has awakened some doubts within me, but I DO NOT doubt I am doing the absolute best thing right now: staying home. If anyone who reads this needs to vent, please feel welcome to message me directly. I may not get back to you right away, but I am here for you to listen to what you're feeling. This is not easy. https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KyEP1jV3E/?igshid=1ge8vur4bn8wu
Finished the pattern to my "Harlequin Headwarmer" earlier this week, and today we have more snow so it's definitely not too late! You can purchase this pattern at the link in my bio. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I hope you are staying happy and healthy. I'm trying not to push myself too much, and to check myself when I start to feel that nagging stress. Easier said than done, but something that's helped me is to put down whatever I'm doing, even just for a moment, and pay attention to my breathing. Let me tell you, breathing is a great thing. I'm also reminding myself to be more compassionate, especially when things are complicated. #Fridaythe13th #stillwinter #headwarmer #earwarmer #knitting #knitpattern #knit #knithat #intarsia @blueskyfibers #river #ridge #selfie #YakimaRiver #washyourhands #stayhomewhensick (at Yakima River) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9rp8ZuD9_r/?igshid=1bg1g92za7ylz
Fun fact: I am canvassing today for the U.S. presidential election and I'm terrified. Luckily, I'm wearing my first completed knit sweater to help keep me brave. I also have a squeeze toy in my pocket to help with the jitters. I wanted to conclude #FiberuaryChallenge on a positive note, and leave with a message of hope. I'm so grateful to be able to do this. Thanks to everyone who followed along, offered kind words, and to everyone who participated in this challenge. You all are crazy inspiring. I'm creatively drained at this point, but overall this challenge has motivated me to continue creating and not take myself too seriously. @fiberuarychallenge #funfact #Feb29 #leapday #February #canvassing #🧶 #sweater #sweaterweather #knitsweater #knitting #knit #slowfashion #instaknit #knitstagram #knittersofinstagram #photochallenge2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Kpv98DgEe/?igshid=x8ky1jvuytf6
What's next. Well, this year I'd like to offer more free knitting patterns. And I'd like to donate more knit items. When I was learning to knit I didn't have the resources to pay for classes or lessons. I was lucky enough to have free resources like YouTube videos and tutorials. It did take a long time, but the fact that I could learn completely free outside of knitting supplies is amazing to me. I want to give back and offer resources because crafts should be available to everyone. #knitting #FiberuaryChallenge #Fiberuary #upnext #free #instaknit #givingback #knittingpatterns #penguin #decor #bowl #knitbowl #knit #Feb28 @fiberuarychallenge #photochallenge2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Hsfy4j6VM/?igshid=zc9bgho0pj10
I'm horrible at following morning routines but I try to knit at some point every morning if time allows. Even if it's only a few stitches, it's something to quell anxiety before the day's demands. These yarn colors are especially relaxing to me. I've thought up so many cool projects for them, but I've landed on knitting a stuffed whale. Because why not? #relaxing #FiberuaryChallenge #Fiberuary #knitting #morning #sage #candles #yarn #wip #instaknit #knitstagram #knit #intarsia #colors #🐋 @fiberuarychallenge #Feb27 #photochallenge2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9FFBoGj3Ur/?igshid=12vrnzhihbz0k
Sending gratitude to all the local yarn store owners and employees out there! ❤ This #FiberuaryChallenge prompt is a bit difficult for me since there isn't a prominent yarn store in my hometown and I'm not buying much yarn at the moment. I was able to find this photo of @closeknitpdx in Portland, one of my most favorite yarn stores. And one of @islandwools in Friday Harbor, WA. I also want to give a shout out to @yarnfolk in Ellensburg, WA! Which is totally worth the drive. #knitting #lys #localyarnstore #yarn #knittersofinstagram #crochet #fiberart #yarnstores #pnw #Feb26 @fiberuarychallenge #photochallenge2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9DlOZijXVB/?igshid=12c8hz9kju6iv

Kicking off the last week of #FiberuaryChallenge with the prompt "matching". I couldn't think of anything more fitting than this cowl/ear warmer set I did with Naturally Caron Spa yarns (sadly discontinued). They are thick and silky and lovely for cool February days. #Fiberuary @fiberuarychallenge #knitting #instaknit #knitstagram #doubleknitting #colorwork #knit #knitscarf #knithat #matching #February #diy #bambooyarns #Feb24 #photochallenge2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B89czGPDCTP/?igshid=jjxjxxp7hbof
Modeling some throwback projects for #FiberuaryChallenge! I rarely wear these scarves, unfortunately, but have become too attached to donate them because they represent my time as a nascent knitter. Especially the gray cable scarf. I wanna say that was the second cable scarf I ever knit, and I kept it because I had enough yarn to make the length substantial. . . #selfayyyyys #cableknitting #knitting #cowl #scarf #scarves #knitscarves #knit #knitstagram #instaknit #knittersofinstagram #knitting #winter #throwback #throwbackproject #earlyprojects @fiberuarychallenge #Feb21 #photochallenge2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B82sE8eDYzl/?igshid=izrd5naqonf5
Nothing makes me feel more cozy than curling up on the couch with my lived-in knit blanket and some tea or hot chocolate. If you need me, I'll be here til the end of time. Just kidding.
