Autistic Lifehack: Hearing Problems
If someone says something that you only partially understand:
DON’T ask for clarification with a generic “What?” or “I’m sorry?” (In my experience, people will repeat the phrase the exact same way without helping you to understand).
Example: Them: “Hey, do you like pahganabasa?” Autistic Person: “What?” Them: “Do you like pahganabasa?” Autistic Person: “I’m sorry, what?” Them (annoyed): “Do you like pahganabasa?”
Instead, DO repeat the part that you did understand, and substitute a “What?” for the unintelligable part.
Example: Them: “Hey, do you like pahganabasa?” Autistic Person: “Do I like what?” Them: “Pineapple pizza?” Autistic Person: (Understands the words!)
I’ve also had successes with “I’m sorry, I only heard the first half of that sentence,” or actually verbalizing my interpretation of the part I heard incorrectly as a question: “Pahgana… basa?”.
Sometimes that makes the speaker think that they might be mumbling, or verbalizing in a way that makes them difficult to understand (because there are times it’s really not your brain–it’s their mouth).
This is also a lifesaver if you have Auditory Processing Disorder. It stopped the amount of annoyed sighs because ppl thought I was deliberately ignoring them or them saying the same thing but louder (which does not help when volume isn’t the problem)
I’ve been known to ask for the exact part I missed. “Third word, last two syllables?” or “Hotel-India-Kilo-Echo or Bravo-India-Kilo-Echo?” among friends who know the Nato Phonetic Alphabet.

This is why people who stay in my life are neurodiverse like me!
this!! I swear I lost like all my friendships bc of this, like I had a group of friends in hs that one day I realized "huh I haven't talked to this people in a while" and popped in to say hi and they were all awkward?? because they hadn't seen me in a while?? and that's when I realized that friendship works different for them?? I was like yeah I haven't talked to you in like four months but it's not like I've forgotten about y'all why would anything change, and they were all like we haven't talked to you in four months why are you here again acting like nothing happened? and it was really confusing for me
YEAH! THAT!
Also I have a thing where I just put the people on pause. If I don’t see them or contact them, my brain kinda put them in stasis. I don’t think about them nor misses them, and I stay on what I last knew about them (how they look, what they study/work). So when we meet again I’m like “wait, you’ve aged?” and I have the same familiarity with them thanI had before.
Anyway all my mutuals I haven't messaged in forever - this is why
oh my gods this makes so much sense??? there are people who i haven’t talked to at all for literally over a year and we’ll pick up like nothing happened, but for their people it’s just like...... falling apart but onesided???? i think we’re still on the same level but actually we’re strangers??
Ohhhhhh
Wait this makes so much sense!

This is incredible thank you
I collected some cones that fell from the gorgeous Coastal Redwood my neighbors have in their yard. I didn't know those could grow here! I thought it was too dry. They smell so good!
I've passed this tree almost every day since moving here and couldn't figure out what it was. It's behind a fence so I couldn't get up close, and it being a redwood never crossed my mind as a possibility until I took a closer look at the cones.
From a distance, the bark looks kind of like a cedar, the needles like a fir or a yew, and the cones like a hemlock.
The interesting thing about redwoods is that their foliage changes the taller it gets. The lower foliage is thick, wide needles, while the upper foliage looks scaly like a cedar.
