I SAW THIS IN THE PORTLAND ART MUSEUM! ITS HUGE!
it shimmers like no gemstones i've ever seen: green as malachite and emerald but shot through with opal, gold, copper. photographs can't do it justice because of how it shines, as well as the way the actual material elements have their own dimensions. you can lean in and study all the fine lines of the circuits or step back and admire how the rearranged whole forms new patterns. it's one of the most beautiful creations i've ever seen.
Love to see modern computing technology proudly embracing its textile roots
It's Fossil Friday! Behold the dazzling colors of an iridescent ammonite (Placenticeras intercalare). A relative of today’s squids, this ammonite lived some 80 million years ago near what is now Alberta, Canada. This fossil’s spectacular coloration is the result of millions of years of high temperatures and pressures. As these forces acted on nacre in this ammonite’s shell, it was transformed into a gemstone known as an ammolite. Along with amber and pearl, ammolite is one of only a handful of gems made by living organisms. You can spot this rare specimen in the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Collections Core in the Museum’s Gilder Center.

adults love seeing a small child or teenager who is so visibly anxious and uncertain of themselves and quiet so they can tell them "HEY!! 👹 YOU BETTER GET SOME CONFIDENCE RIGHT NOW! 🗣 AND SPEAK UP! 🤬 YEAH YOU! 👊 SHY KID 💥 EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS SHY KID 👈 WHO I'M GOING TO FIX 🙏 WITH THE POWER OF LOUD !!! 😤 YOU'D BEST BELIEVE IT! 😱 NOW SHOUT, SHY KID!!! 🤯 SHOUT AT ME!!! 👽 HUUAAHH&HHH 🗯 NOW TEAR ASUNDER THE HUSK OF YOUR FORMER SELF ☠️ YEAH RIGHT NOW 👇 WHY DON'T YOU FEEL CONFIDENT 💣 I AM GIVING YOU THE CURE" and the shy kid has to pretend like this isn't the millionth time they've had this exact conversation
my favorite thing about Miles Vorkosigan so far is that he is an exact 50/50 combo of his father's incredible strategic maneuvering and his mother's willingness to go off half-cocked on a batshit insane op that could only be called a plan because advance thought was technically put into it and tapdance on quicksand until shit works out.

"[...] Understanding the world as a collection of aesthetics, of brands, instead of a series of philosophies and power struggles means focusing on how things appear, and not how or why they work. It’s bad enough to think about art this way, but thinking of yourself this way is a real disaster, [it] means neglecting what drives you, what fulfills you, what makes you human. The invented lifestyles of these aesthetics offer no path to embodiment, because they aren’t designed for entities with bodies. They’re designed for TikTok, and hashtags, and the wiki."

everyone say thank you to that one anne hathaway twelfth night promo image for all it's done for fandom
I love the “captain’s log” mechanism in Star Trek as a method for time skips and exposition.
I am, however, devastated that we never got an episode where any captain’s voiceover is strained and slow. very precise about the events they’re describing. While the screen itself is showing the most batshit insane events and making it clear that the captain is trying VERY HARD to keep everyone involved out of a court martial.
screencap study! didn’t finish this in time for may the 4th but 2.09 was released on may 6th so happy anniversary 2.09 🫡

To anyone wondering if it's worth it to tear down fascist posters or whatever. I spent a few months last year engaged in silent battle with another student at my school who was putting anti trans stickers up everywhere. I had it down to a system where every night I would walk the five block radius they went up in, and tear down all the ones I could reach, and use a stick to put duct tape over the others. Like, within hours of the stickers going up, I would have already purged the whole zone. I knew the basic schedule of whoever put them up based on when and where the stickers appeared. I probably could have found them in person if I'd wanted to. And I told all my classmates and friends what the stickers looked like and got them to rip them down too. And after a few months of this, the stickers slowed, and then stopped forever.
My point is, a lot of this fashy or right wing stuff is one local weirdo. And if you pay attention, and do a little light organizing with your friends, you can basically make their efforts into a giant sisyphisean exercise in misery. You control your streets!
Remember: It costs money to keep printing those stickers, but ripping them down is free.
i think they have a crush on each other
dude star wars is so good and/or bad and/or mediocre sometimes, depending
