doing some singing
Turning Red by Sunmee Joh / Maria Yi
Growing up my parents taught me that if you’re too sick to [insert responsibility here] then you’re too sick to [insert something that makes you happy here].
It took me a really long time to unlearn this. When I would get sick or have a “bad day” I would deprive myself of anything that made me happy. Watching movies, eating something I enjoyed, going for a walk, playing video games or just browsing online looking at funny cat videos. I wouldn’t let myself do these things because I was always told that if I’m too sick to go to work, or do homework, or go to school then I must be too sick to play Mortal Kombat or watch Unsolved Mysteries lol.
Whenever I wouldn’t feel good, which I later learned as an adult was due to sleep deprivation caused by my ADHD and depression (and of course the depression itself would cause me to feel like shit), my parents would tell me “if you’re not throwing up, then you’re not sick.” And when I would stay home from school (or even work in my later teen years) my parents would make sure that I didn’t have any “fun.” No TV, no movies, no games, no going outside, no arts and crafts, no books, no nothing. Just lay in bed and feel miserable.
I’m happy to say that I no longer do this to myself. Now when I’m having a bad day or I’m sick (cold, flu or whatever) I allow myself to do the things (within reason lol) that I actually love doing. If I’m not too sick to step outside for a few minutes then I’ll go for a walk. I’ll watch my favorite movies and if it’s a bad day or a cold (something that doesn’t hinder my appetite too much) I’ll eat my favorite foods. I don’t guilt trip myself anymore for having a “sick day.”
Just because you’re sick (whether physically, emotionally or mentally) doesn’t mean that you can’t do things you enjoy. You’re not any less sick because you watch TV. You’re not any less sick because you’re playing video games.
Actually you SHOULD be doing these things when you’re not feeling good because they make you feel better. The better you feel, the faster your heal.
Thank you! I needed to read this.
oh. oH. OH. I needed this omfg
Staying home from work when you feel sick means you are;
Not spreading disease to your coworkers
Trying to relax so your body can fight the disease faster without extra stress holding you back.
Too tired to concentrate for 8 hours straight
Too tired to do laborous physical activity for 8 hours straight
Not risking aggravating your symptoms and passing out or vomiting on the job
Staying home from work does not stop you from;
Doing relaxing things, like reading a book, browsing the internet, or watching a movie. These things take little mental effort, and are not comparable to working.
Doing some chores, or mildly laborious hobbies like knitting, writing, painting, or playing video games. Just because you are shedding germs that could make others sick doesn’t necessarily imply you are incapable of physical activity. Even people who are recovering from a surgery that removed an entire organ can knit and play video games while they heal. Part of their GUTS are missing and they are ENCOURAGED to do hobby stuff.
Going outside for a walk. Fresh air and the sight of trees and animals is actually proven to help you heal faster. It’s a verified form of physical and mental therapy. I encourage you to do it.
Feeling happy, feeling relaxed, feeling positive and stress-free; those things help you recover faster.
Take note of the COVID virus. Some people feel perfectly fine while infected. They might feel like they have a tiny cough, or a little tired, but they certainly are not bedridden.
However, it would SAVE LIVES if that infected person would STAY HOME and not go in to work or school.
To prevent the spread of disease to your classmates and coworkers is an ETHICALLY and MORALLY GOOD reason to stay home. You are a part of society. Extend that kindness to the folks around you.
Addition to this: the rationale of this among many parents us “my kid will fake sick to get out of school” - that was why I malingered so much as a kid. Neither of my parents ever wanted to examine why I hated school enough to induce vomiting to avoid it.
If you’re worried your kid is pretending to be sick, it’s worth examining why they would want to “pretend” that in the first place instead of assuming the worst of them and instilling in them the fear of being seen as “not sick enough” if they don’t perform misery to your standards.
Oh hey shit I wish I could have laminated for my mother years ago.
Her death was not an accident. Please sign the petition for the FBI to handle the reinvestigation of the case involving the death of Tamla Horsford.
Just so you guys understand what kind of place Forsyth County is… Oprah visited. They told her on TELEVISION that if she stayed the night there, she would be lynched. In 1987.
If she is EVER going to get justice, you guys need to be LOUD! Forsyth will ABSOLUTELY try to cover this up. It is an EXTREMELY racist place.
mutuals do this
I am dead serious: If you are a Walmart employee, at any level and in any store — like if you are a high school kid with a part time job stocking shelves — message me any question you have about unions. Like ask me “What’s a union” if you want. I will explain it to you. I am a grievance chair for a white collar union whose workplace only unionized within the last five years and whose management fought as every step of the way, but in the end we fucking won. It can be done, and I can tell you how.
Rb to kill wal mart
Unionizing is our wet dream I promise you.
I like how it’s described as a union could “cripple American Capitalism” when more precisely it’s just that a union would be so powerful as to force WalMart (or any other company) to pay their workers like human beings. That’s not going to break Walmart. They’ll barely notice.
They’ve successfully convinced us that the unions are the greedy monsters. For so many years, the companies have painted unions as “we want you to pay janitors three million dollars a year and if you don’t we’ll set your stores on fire”.
But it’s more like “We want you to take an almost imperceptible fraction of your bountiful profits and use it to make your employees’ live marginally better, and maybe give them medical benefits, y’know, so they don’t die”.
Big companies did not stop hiring ten year olds to work in coal mines because they just woke up one day and said “my god, we’re monsters”. They did it because their workers stood together and said “really, enough of this crap”.
Companies are not going to give people raises unless it’s economically necessary that they do so. Anything they can do to lower their expenses, and raise their profits, they are going to do. And no one person can stop them.
But thousands of people, millions of people? Better chances.
To anyone that wants to claim it wouldn’t work:
Just another reminder that Walmart Germany was a spectacular fail because of ver.di (which is a national service trade union that has it’s control over almost all trade and service companies in Germany) among other things.
Like, ver.di essentially came up to the CEO of Walmart Germany and was like “Hi, welcome, we wish you the best and that we can work together well :)” and the dude was like “hahaha no” and tried to pull the american concept here so ver.di pulled out a list of all the breaches of german law that Walmart was doing (underpaying workers, trying to avoid paying health care by using part-timers, trying to be open for more than 80 hours per week, firing people on short notice without warning or exit payments, etc) and long story short, they got some massive hefty fines for it. They also set up a list of demands for the workers and organized national strikes to push them through, making the employees of 85 hypermarkets neatly stand in front of the store doors with signs, whistles and chants (and certainly not the “Wallmart! Wallmart!” chant). In the end, that plus other things caused them to bail after 9 years with a gigantic loss (almost a billion just from sales) from one of the best retail markets in the world.
So all those issues like “no healthcare” or “work full-time and need food stamps” or “work on sundays and holidays” and shit? Unions are there to set their foot down against that for you. They are there to keep you safe from the corps wrath while fighting for your rights.
Cause if you, an individual, complain, they just fire you and laugh about it. A union is a collection of hundreds up to MILLIONS of people, supported by lawyers, going against employers for you.
In Denmark, due to union negotiations & refusal to work for slave wages, the McDonald’s basic pay comes out to about $20 US / Hour. The big mac there costs about 60 cents more.
Actually crippling capitalism is good and cool anyway
Reminder than Walmart won’t even be paying time and a half during thanksgiving and Black Friday to their employees. They only give them a DISCOUNT On two specific days. Shit pay and their only “perk” is to give the money back to Walmart by shopping there.
Fuck Walmart. Unionize. Burn the waltons down.
America is legit sending kids to juvi for not attending zoom classes? Is America trying to compete with the onion?? This is horrifying
the us government doesnt give a shit about children. and in this age satire falls short when the truth is far more horrifying.
This is attempted murder of a child and that judge should be punished:
A 15-year-old in Michigan was incarcerated during the coronavirus pandemic after a judge ruled that not completing her schoolwork violated h
This is proof of antiblack judges making racist judgements that inevitably lead to the school to prison pipeline. They curate environments where black children are not suppose to thrive and then punish them for it.
Again, in these times of corona this is not just ruining this childs life for being black, having adhd and struggling with school, this is also a threat on her life made by the judge who clearly is incapable of dealing with children least of all black children.
This judge is trying to kill children, specifically in this case a black child for struggling under times that are difficult for everyone, where she should have extended her courtesy she made an attempt on her life.
Judge Mary Ellen Brennan is a racist who has put a poor child’s life at risk and she shouldn’t be allowed around children because of it.
She talks about the concerns of corona for children while throwing this child to the plague. Hypocrite and an attempted murderer, no I am not changing my wording.
This is the face of a child abuser. This is the face of a woman who attempted to murder a black child who could not keep up with her schooling. This is the face of a menance to society.
Would be a shame if people asked why Mary is allowed to endanger the lives of children because they didn’t do some homework.

‘He was my everything’: Boy who drowned in Brookings pond remembered for smile, generosity
The body of Molu Zarpeleh, 10, who was reported missing last Thursday night, was recovered from a privately-owned retention pond along 12th Street South around 8:40 a.m. Friday after authorities searched the pond, according to a new release from the City of Brookings.
A tip that Zarpeleh had been pushed into the pond that circulated on social media has been redacted by the tipster, said Chelsea Bakken, public information officer for the City of Brookings. Investigators also reported that tips they received Friday related to circumstances surrounding the incident were not true but won’t state why. Police are ignoring it and ruling it an “accidental drowning but his mother says differently.
“A 10-year-old boy would not just take his sandals off and walk into the water,” she said. “He didn’t know how to swim.”
Brookings police and the Brookings Fire Department searched for Zarpeleh until about 2:30 a.m. Friday before the search was stopped due to safety concerns, poor lighting and murky water, the release states. Searchers used pumps from Brookings Municipal Utilities and Brookings County to remove about 300,000 gallons of water from the pond during the resumed search Friday morning
“Molu died, but I can’t say ‘was’ yet,” Mole said. “He’s my first child. He’s my only son. I don’t want to use the word ‘was.’ I can’t imagine him not living.”

I don’t know who wrote this but...
I needed y’all to commiserate with me that there’s at least one guy that thinks that people don’t have a vagina until some penis comes along and pierces it open like a straw poking into a Capri Sun and also that a clitoris is where the vagina is.
IM HOWLING
I've been cooped up inside for months and not singing enough. Which made me want to scream but I should sing instead.
Police officers have arrested a man for filming an arrest even though they acknowledged it was legal for him to do so– and he’s a State Congressman
The police officers seemed more concerned with calling Rep. John Walker a “race baiter” for doing something completely legal than they were in upholding the law. But the kicker is that Rep. Walker had already been arrested for the same thing years ago, which is why he fought for the law (and won) in the first place.

Happy 4th, Folks!?
Don’t forget this is the stuff that happens now in the United States in the year 2020. Reflect on that as you celebrate “freedom” this weekend.

ICE has been ordered to release children but they're the ones who get to decide if they release their parents as well or if they're just throwing these kids out, so please at the very least sign this petition
PS. this isn't a change.org petition either, so it is worth signing!
Ever After (1998), quoting Sir Thomas More.
i think ultimately one of my favorite things about crazy ex-girlfriend is that it’s a story about stories. it’s a television show about television shows; it’s a musical about musicals; it’s a romantic comedy about romantic comedies.
throughout the show we see how these genres have the potential to do great harm. the messages they send, the power structures they reinforce, the boxes they try to fit people into: all of these things can contribute negatively to a person’s mental health or life decisions. at the beginning of the show, rebecca has bought into the stories she grew up on, she has internalized the messages they sent her, she has defined herself as a character in a story (the hero in her own story, if you will).
but none of these stories offer what rebecca truly needs, which is self-love and self-understanding. instead they offer roles, personas, and caricatures, which she tries on and casts aside in a desperate effort to understand herself in relation to the world and people around her. she’s the hero! no, she’s the villain! no, she’s just a girl in love! no, she’s the crazy ex-girlfriend! she’s in a fairytale! no, she’s in a rom-com! no, she’s in a horror movie! no, she’s in a buddy-cop tv show (coming soon to cbs)!
what ends up freeing rebecca from this mindset is her realization that she does not have to be bound to the stories she was fed as a child, that she can actually write her own stories. when she returns to the musicals she loved as a child and realizes they are deeply problematic, her impulse is not to bury her feelings of discomfort in order to enjoy them, nor is it to abandon musical theatre altogether; rather it is to rewrite those musicals to say what she wants them to say. and in the end, she decides to write her own musicals, her own songs, her own stories. and it is through this process that she finally finds what she was missing in those other stories: not a role but a self, who is too hard to summarize but still worth meeting.
i really like that ending, for rebecca and for this story about stories. because yes, stories can hurt, they can damage, they can mess you up for life. but they can also heal, they can liberate, they can empower. maybe life doesn’t make narrative sense, but we still can and should tell stories about it. let’s just make sure they’re good ones.
26-year-old Jamarion Robinson’s grandmother Beverly Nixon said her grandson was bipolar and schizophrenic. Still got shot 76 (!!!) times. Would a white person get the same treatment?
The witness said he saw more than a dozen patrol cars at the complex where US Marshals killed Robinson on August 5, 2016. Why were there no behavioral specialist? Surely one of them would know how to interact with a bipolar schizophrenic better than the police.
I’m absolutely disgusted.
Here’s Jamarion’s mother’s GoFundMe in case anyone is willing to help.
