Different Stories Resonate with Different People
I will always reblog this.
I once spent three hours scouring the internet to find this comic again, I will not let that be repeated.
PLEASE CALL YOUR REPS AND TELL THEM TO VOTE NO ON H.R. 7661, THE TRANSPHOBIC NATIONAL BOOK BAN BILL!
House Republicans have introduced a bill to effectively grant the federal government decision-making power over what books make it into the library. Misleadingly called the "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act," H.R. 7661 is a national-level book banning bill that would ban any book that, according to the bill's language, "(ii) involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism." This means any book about a trans person or the trans experience would be banned from every public school in the United States. You can read the full text here. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce. If you are represented by one of the members of this committee listed below, they need to hear from you. Rep. Kevin Kiley, California (CA-3) (Chair) - entering vulnerable election cycle Rep. Mary E. Miller, Illinois (Vice Chair) Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, Pennsylvania Rep. Burgess Owens, Utah Rep. Michael A. Rulli, Ohio Rep. James C. Moylan, Guam - entering vulnerable election cycle Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, Pennsylvania - entering vulnerable election cycle Rep. Mark Harris, North Carolina Rep. Mark B. Messmer, Indiana Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Oregon, Ranking Member Rep. Jahana Hayes, Connecticut Rep. Summer L. Lee, Pennsylvania Rep. John W. Mannion, New York Rep. Frederica S. Wilson, Florida Rep. Alma S. Adams, North Carolina Rep. Adelita Grijalva, Arizona Call your reps. Tell them they must oppose this bill at every turn. It is egregiously unconstitutional, targets ideas based on ideological disapproval, and misleads parents and the public about the content of children's books. It does nothing to protect kids and will badly harm education. It will tie school material funding into knots and hurt anyone who is a library materials vendor, regardless of content. If you are a bookseller, librarian, or author, tell them your livelihood depends on the next generation of readers. If you are a supporter of free speech, please call your reps and tell them to vote no on HR 7661! Thank you to @authorsagainstbookbans for the graphics and text in the four blue slides.

so. not to doxx myself (i've talked about this here before though) but i live in Kansas. and my license was just revoked very suddenly and immediately because i'm trans and had changed my gender marker.
so now i cannot legally drive or vote until/unless i let them force me to carry around a card that misgenders me and outs me as trans, because i certainly don't look female anymore.
so hey if you have the means and want to help with any of this, please consider donating to the ACLU of Kansas because they are at least going to try to do something to push back against this, and i'm such a panicky wreck that the only thing i can do to get through my immediate gut reaction to having my license revoked tonight (i cannot stress enough that i received the letter today saying that my license is no longer valid tomorrow) is focus on the fact that there's at least one entity trying to protect me and my fellow trans kansans.
More info on what's been happening in Kansas:
"The legislature did not include a grace period."
per that link from Erin Reed: Under Kansas law, driving without a valid license is a class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine—though first-time offenders are more likely to face a citation and fine. A conviction, however, triggers an automatic 90-day license suspension.
the ACLU of Kansas is asking for those affected by SB244/the DMV/bathroom bill to fill out a form - Bathroom Bill and Mandated Government Identity Changes (click the hyperlinked "this form") - direct link (Microsoft Forms).
the form asks for contact information, and states they may be able to offer legal assistance or direct you to resources helpful to you
directly quoted text from the header on the form:
The state of Kansas recently passed SB 244, which will ban transgender people from changing the gender markers on their driver’s licenses or state IDs and also ban trans people from using the restroom that aligns with their gender identity in state, county, or local government buildings, among other things. If you are a transgender resident of Kansas who will be directly impacted by SB 244, the ACLU Foundation (“ACLUF”) wants to hear about it. We might be able to help. Please tell us by filling out the form below. We receive many requests for help, so please bear with us as we try to get back to you. We’ll tell you if we can offer legal assistance, or if we are able to find other resources that might be helpful to you. If this is time sensitive, please contact another attorney.
If you're looking to relocate, Kansas folks, your Colorado neighbors are trying to help. (Also, if heading in a different direction, smaller college towns in Central / Southern IL, a state with strong trans protections, are a thought as well, reach out for the info on the area if interested.) (If you are looking for ways to help out, they are a small team and take donations and are in need of volunteers!)

Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost
Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!
It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.
I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?
How many relationships? How much writing?
You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.
Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!
Here is a program that lets you download any and all of your discord DMs, your servers, everything. You can set the format (raw text, html (dark and light), and others. You can even download the uploaded files not just the text, though that may be just for the command-line version not the GUI window version.

Please back up your conversations, your stories. I have a backup of everything I care about that runs once a week, with full attachment backups every several months. I write stories on discord, and would be devastated if someone happened to them. You have to have your own local copies of every file you care about.
They're about to start asking for your "Sam Porter Bridges" / 'are you old enough' face scan or physical ID soon by default / at random. I strongly suggest that you do not provide your physical ID pics or scans to any social media platform. The reason I personally care: I was on an solitary expiring ID I couldn't renew way back when going through immigration courts once and the clock was certainly ticking down to months and weeks - I was aware of the countdown every day and hour; I looked half my age to strangers to the point where I could have got kid discounts in my 20-30s.
This kind of choice would have locked me out of the platform:
This is a giant hell no! My final photos of the 'window to another world' - @sinick's birthday / Solstice / New Year gift. Happy journey across the ocean! (I still can't get over the thought that once you land, timezone-wise - you'll be in my tomorrow!)
I didn't take any photos after adding the sliver of the new moon and rendering airplane detail, so imagine it's there.
Finally starting to work on the centerpiece stained glass scene of painting for @sinick, which has a window-within-a-window vibe. The corner bright blue is probably going to end up grey during the next session so it doesn't distract from the center. In the meantime I've sorted out most of the surrounding glass pieces including that gorgeous spiral around the teardrop shaped glass. Next steps - work on refining those branches up above and honey jar down below, then get more glow into the green surrounding the cauldron. Memo to self not to forget the birds that usually settle in the pines for the night or a random airplane that tend to be as frequent here in the night sky as the stars. I've added some metallic silver here and there for the outlines and am painting over it as I go. It tends to morph from bright to dark depending on the angle - hopefully I captured enough of that from different perspectives.
Time for some partial detail on the stained glass window painting for @sinick - ink pens, silver and gold gel pens, whiteout. Not much acrylic just yet. I haven't started rendering the centerpiece one and missing a star to the left of it. Thanksgiving weekend is when I will get the chance to truly work on it. (I remember that window since the time it only had that one sideways glass square with a teardrop for a centerpiece -- it's been my computer background for a good decade. It's just a drafted sketch as far as I'm concerned at the moment.)
Top 10 favorite snape fics?
I'm glad you asked! I have so many favorites but here are the ones that really shaped how I see Snape and the ones I'll probably keep coming back to over the years. Most of them are nsfw.
1 That Awful Boy by @paracosim
... and of course its sequel, The Pauper Prince. This will come as a surprise to approximately no one. This is the fic that got me into this fandom and I love it with my whole heart. Severitus, Snupin
2 Case Consultation: Severus S by @lady-heliotrope-writes
TRANS SNAPE GOES TO THERAPY 😭🙏😍
3 Chrysalis by starcrossedgirl
My comfort Snarry story
4 Post War by @josiecarioca
Great mix of romance, action, and character exploration. Severus x OC
5 All Beasts Are Happy by @rex-luscus
One of my favorite characterizations of Snape ever. Snupin, incomplete
6 Invention of a Thousand Steps by @snapescapades
The first trans Snape fic I ever read and it changed my life. Beautiful.
7 O Mine Enemy by KirbyLane
Classic Severitus
8 The Price of Magic by Acid
My favorite Snarry writer. This one broke my heart and kind of put it back together again
9 Snape of St Brutal's by Delphi
Honestly anything by Delphi, but I am particularly fond of this series (reformatory school AU). It really leans into what makes Snilch such a compelling dynamic for me
10 Elegy for a Goat by @perverse-idyll
Likewise please read everything by perverse-idyll. This story is Snape at his most tragic, pathetic, and human, and feels more real than anything else I've ever read. Aberforth x Snape
> "8 The Price of Magic by Acid" Incredibly important correction: The Price of Magic by Sinick and Acid (as per my original illustration from 2004/2005 HP fandom era.)
I'm only now seeing Price as the eighth item here and while I'm grateful it's been remembered and loved over the years, I must point out that I'm the co-writer of Price mainly responsible for Harry's voice. If people are crediting only me in the context of Snape's characterization there, they are crediting the wrong person. Top seven (I could keep going on and on past that) things I love about @sinick - my co-writer's - Severus Snape's - voice are: 1. Her Severus is a survivor. Through heartbreak, loss, upheaval, or impending apocalypse (aka your average regular Thursday): he has an unwavering will to survive and claw his way back to life, no matter how brutal life gets. 2. Her Severus has a strong backbone of recognizing right from wrong, even though any of his life's hardships could have left him jaded and he learned to play the game to survive, at his core he never strayed from his principles. 3. Her Severus grew up poor, and the class divide between him and Lucius or Draco is made crystal clear: it's so rare to see authentic protagonists who came from nothing and she absolutely nails this. 4. Her Severus delivers justice - not vengeance - despite all the expectations and despite his past experiences teaching him that justice is neither popular nor convenient. 5. Her Severus is touch-starved, lonely, observant, loyal, pragmatic, kind, and capable of immense love and devotion once placing his trust in someone. 6. Her Severus navigates London and UK culture lending that setting authenticity, inside and out, because she witnessed it. Price's London wouldn't be the same without her. 7. Throughout our numerous collaborative works, @sinick's Severus perfectly captures the mundanely-bitter daily grind of working tirelessly behind the scenes while the Gryffindors bask in spotlight. I've changed fandom handles over the years and @sinick has always been right here. For those looking or recommending Severus Snape-themed stories, please keep in mind: Price is the work of two authors, and in this case, it's @sinick's voice that brings Severus to life. Let's give proper credit where credit is long overdue. There would be no Price or Commonplace Magic or the paintings below illustrating Price for that matter, without @sinick.
I've been incredibly blessed sharing several fandoms and creative works with @sinick throughout this century, let's revisit the earliest one.
How could he possibly become even a more fun and silly character. I love this version of him even more 😭💛 With all his inner drama hidden behind his bright and loud front
[ko-fi] [my carrd] [support me on patreon][my discord server]
We have only seen a few episodes of Vox Machina (I'm hooked from the start and the character... isn't a purple centaur -- yet -- alas?) but this already looks like The Witcher's Jaskier (game edition), Varric from Dragon Age, King Zavrius from Seth Haddon's Reforged (book series), Gary the Unicorn (from TJ Klune's Tales from Verania - also book series), and every single overpowered DnD bard all had a wild night (they shall never speak of) which resulted in a love child / bi/pan disaster that is Scanlan Shorthalt. I'm all there for it.
Omg, kitty accordion ftw!
@sinick, I worked on your painting a bit more today and made more progress focusing on the colors of the sky. I forgot to take photos throughout - it was a relatively short painting session. Putting spots of color down over the underpainting usually goes relatively quick if the detail is already there. Acrylic can be mixed with water and for this I've been treating it a lot more like watercolor, layering the paint over the existing base. Now onto figuring out the green/blue hues and all the stained glass details.
Engel smuggling her xenos into the no xenos allowed party like
Happy birthday, @sinick - the underpainting of the view we both know well is almost finished in time -- for today, at least, even though I'll definitely be fashionably late to the (fabulous) party on this one. They say if I can get the values and detail right at that stage, it's 90% done. But now it's time to start putting color back into stained glass and the sunset sky, and I can't wait to get started. (It's a great weekend ahead and a good end to a good day. Thank you for making it so!)

This is a poignant and sweet AU with an original and vivid setting -- music woven in throughout with the imagery of the fireflies and the theme of absolution used wonderfully in the recurring scenes. Especially loved the unique move -- unique to this Harry -- used as seduction, the quiet humor on both of their parts - several dialogue lines and conjured images made me chuckle aloud. Severus making his choice of allegiances, Harry steering him away from his usual habit of solitary martyrdom makes for a quietly beautiful ending.
I've said the rest in ao3 comments. I'll just restate the important part here: thank you for your gift, Anonymous Author.
