Dragons: Race to the Edge - Season 4, Episode 11, Blindsided
im laughing so hard why was his first instinct to literally throw himself at her when she tripped. please what did you think it would do. you fucking dumbass
Okay no wait I love this scene
Because yes I always thought the same thing, you dumb clumsy noodle limb oaf why are you throwing yourself on top of her you’re not coordinated enough to help you’re just gonna make it worse
But
don’t mind the pic of my tv screen idk how yall get the high res screenshots
Someone please tell me how said noodle boy manages to kneel next to her without putting his body weight on her and CATCH HER HEAD so she doesn’t smack it into the ground. My man saw the love of his life falling and suddenly he’s freaking quicksilver
Sanfan my dear why would you leave this in the tags. You’re absolutely right how could I forget
No hesitation. He had one thought: she cannot be hurt, and he succeeded twofold. Beautiful.
stoick thinking his son is gone. toothless waiting until stoick apologizes to show hiccup to him. toothless showing stoick what he could’ve lost, what he could lose, if he doesn’t become the father hiccup deserves.
It is canon that at some point, while Hiccup was still in a coma, Gobber went through his room and workshop to find the schematics for Toothless's tail. I cannot imagine that Stoick did not join him.
What must it have felt like, seeing all of Hiccup's drawings and models of Toothless? There is so much to unpack about what they would have thought.
They must have been struck by how little Hiccup hid his things (a canon detail!), because Hiccup knew they didn't care enough to notice. He left drawings of Toothless out ON HIS DESK and never worried about it.
Can you imagine? Your child loves something so deeply that it has become intrinsic to who they are, and you know they knew you would hate that thing if you found out, and you realize that they felt like they didn't even really need to hide it because you never looked at them enough to notice. And they were right.
And, also, Stoick and Gobber must have appreciated for the first time how incredible Hiccup's inventions are. Gobber had to break down the tail schematics to recreate it, which meant he had to fully confront how the tail control mechanism was light-years beyond any other piece of technology on the island.
They would have found, too, Hiccup's first few attempts at the tail. They would have been confronted with the fact that when given the space to test things, to try things and iron out the flaws, Hiccup is a genius. All those old inventions that almost worked but malfunctioned in some way? Yeah, if the village hadn't stopped Hiccup, if they had let him take notes and try again, those inventions probably would have worked.
Can you imagine what they felt, realizing how badly they had stifled and mistreated Hiccup? Realizing that if they had given him space to be himself, he would have been creating miracles his entire life?
ALSO, Stoick and Gobber must have truly understood for the first time how deeply Hiccup cared for Toothless. Hiccup made technical drawings for the tailfin, yes. But he also canonically drew a lot of art of Toothless just. Being Toothless. In the Live Action he even made a wooden carving with articulated wings! It is so evident from his space how much he loved Toothless. What do you think Stoick felt, seeing that, knowing how he himself treated Toothless after the arena fight?
There is just so much that comes from that small detail of Gobber making a new tailfin, and I desperately want, like, a novella from Stoick and Gobber's POV of that time period.
They look out for each other
Happy fifteen years to my favorite movie! <3
Toothless is not given enough credit for being willing to share his food despite being hurt and probably really hungry after a whole day trapped in the cove, and with the guy who hurted him in the first place
And the fact that he didn't even trusted Hiccup in that moment but still insisted until he ate the fish, it's not just the fact that dragons are also caring and gentle despite their reputation, is the fact that after everything Toothless went trough the last days, he still tried feed Hiccup despite being hungry himself and despite that Hiccup tried to kill him, he had all the reasons to be wary of Hiccup (and for moments he was) but he still put that anger aside for this human's sake, to make sure he was fed. It's not dragons natural kindness anymore, it's Toothless own compassion and solidarity with another lonely, scared being who is unprotected and on his own
It gets better.
You see, Toothless doesn't like sharing his food.
Might seem unlikely but hear me out, he got instantly on edge and then angry when terrible terror landed nearby and tried to take his fish
Toothless had a whole heap and he wouldn't allow the little guys to take even one. And in the series he got super mad at Torch for eating his dinner.
But Hiccup in this scene gets a fish. Toothless doesn't fully trust him yet but he did see Hiccup drop his knife and bring him food and Toothless remembers him. Remembers that this human had set him free
Hiccup wasn't the only one who felt like he was staring into his own soul back then
Part 6 because I have a problem. Will I make more? We will see...

I think Astrid's decision to stand her ground and waste time pulling her axe free to bash the lunging Deadly Nadder on the nose says a lot about her character and how protective she is.
Because the less dangerous and arguably the smarter option for her would've been to dodge out of the way and then get her axe. She probably would've had more time if she had, the Nadder would've needed to focus on all of them, Gobber included, instead of just her.
But dodging out of the way meant the dragon would've gotten straight to Hiccup and that's why she chose the way riskier option instead. Because if she hadn't managed to pull her axe free in time, she could've died. Or at least gotten seriously injured, cutting her dragon killing career very short.
Despite this very huge risk, she stayed. She stayed because that meant she was still in between Hiccup and the Nadder, acting like a human shield. She stayed because that was also the best option to save both the lives of herself and Hiccup. And she didn't even waste a second to think this through. She chose the option instinctually, choosing to try to save both of them without a moment's hesitation.
Another parallel that I just caught on my rewatch of the first movie?
Hiccup telling Astrid he's about to do something crazy after she told him he already did something stupid.
Followed up later by Gobber telling Stoick he's not about to leave him because he's (Stoick's) about to do something crazy.
Perhaps, crazy isn't something Hiccup got from his mother exactly, but from his father.
