also to me using chatgpt or claude or whatever to edit a fanfiction is the same as using it to generate it. it has the same ecological effects if you're promoting it to remove any spelling errors as it would if you were prompting it to write the whole thing. any suggestions it makes is still stolen work. there is no moral line between using generative ai to write fanfiction and using generative ai to edit.

So, I need y'all to understand the many levels on which this was an epic free skate. He'd had an appalling short program. Total bomb (for him). Under 80 points. For reference, 80 points is respectable, 90 points is terrific, and 100 points is next-level in elite men's short programs.

Nineteenth place going into the free skate. NINETEENTH of twenty-four. And he'd come in a favorite for gold!

So he goes out there and lays THIS down. And because he is who he is, he throws the backflip in at the end despite it being a competition-illegal element that will get him a deduction. Because what the hell, right? He's not even close to medal contention. (And it's a bit of a fuck-you to the International Skating Union, which racistly refused to legalize the move when French skater Surya Bonaly, who is Black, became the first to land it one-footed at the Olympics.)

Scores over 205 points with it, which for an elite men's free skate is next-level. EVEN WITH THE BACKFLIP DEDUCTION.

And ends up winning the frickin' bronze medal. From nineteenth to THIRD. Which, if you're not familiar with figure skating competitions, means that he skated early on (to the point that if you'd been watching live on US network TV you would not have seen his skate) and competitor after competitor after competitor simply couldn't catch up to his score, until the very final skaters in the final group.

First Worlds medal for a French man in, like, fifteen years.

And after this, the ISU rolled its eyes, said "Fine, be that way" in multiple languages, and legalized the backflip in competition.

not to detract from adam siao him fa's incredible performance, but the un-banning of the backflip is actually incredibly dangerous. even after its initial ban, it was used in low-stakes exhibitions, and that's fine. artistic freedom and whatever. but now that it's legal to have in programs, it is going to be part of competition choreography and is thus going to be drilled like competition choreography. and the more time you spend doing backflips on ice, the higher your chance of screwing one up and getting an injury. now, screwing up jumps can injure you pretty badly, but those primarily give you leg injuries. if you screw up a backflip, you will land on your neck. on ice. and because backflips are such crowd-pleasers, more skaters are going to be pressured to put them in their programs. i love adam's performance, but we should not be celebrating the unbanning of the backflip in figure skating.

I mean ice dancing especially, with figure skating they spend a lot of their energy worrying if they're going to kill/be killed by their partner if they fuck up the next throw-jump. Jumps aren't allowed in ice dancing, so they have that much more energy to eyefuck with.

Some people confusing ao3 with goodreads... the audacy and entitlement is... baffling. People blocking you and telling you 'get thee gone', but instead of doing that, you just keep going and write a whole ass manifesto that ppl are sooo bad and rude. I'd rec a mirror, girl.

I know this user. They have been called out on some servers I'm on. I recommend blocking them preemptively and otherwise on sight (also consider turning on comment moderation in general).

Nobody asked. You are not anyone's editor. And to be a "critic" in fandom spaces where people share their hobby works for free... yikes! What would say if I barged into your living room and, I don't know, pulled apart your latest knitting project to critique every mesh?

People like this retain the dubious honor of being my only blocked users on AO3, and for good reason. If this attitude wasn't so insulting, I'd find the bio funny.

Here is the comment from this particular user OP is posting about that sent me into a fit (of laughter, now) - where the entire fic was formatted with clear Present -> Flashback scenes, of scenes that never took place in the Hobbit Triology, but were set during the films (behind the scenes, scenes??)

Also...lol "Him" = Thorin, for context. The COMPANY of Thorin Oakenshield....and he is the company leader...Gandalf even says so, so it must be true.

Anyway, point is, don't be a dick when commenting. If something confuses you, you can always ask politely, or finish the story to connect the dots, instead of making the author feel like shit.

But they kept on reading, to leave that on the final chapter.. on a fic that has been completed for many years because it was a gift fic and thus had to be complete lmao
