Things I learned from rewatching Legend of Korra again:
As impulsive and stubborn as she is, Korra is usually right about most things. She is a LOT more perceptive than most people (especially viewers) give her credit for.
The first thing she says to Asami is âwell, I havenât heard of you at allâŠâ. And it kills me that their first convo was a spite convo.
Mako doesnât change much. I can understand why the girls ditched him. More of a decent guy than I originally thought, but honestly kind of a wet sandwich.
People tend to ignore how much Korra was embroiled in the political side of being the Avatar. Aang dealt with it too, but it was more of a âthe world needed a saviorâ thing. Korra was neck deep in what is essentially the âapproval ratingâ side of being a public figure and the fact that she had to wade through that while dealing with all of the crap she went through? She deserved a LOT more credit.
Korrasami was immediately online. It never really stopped. It was there if you knew what to look for.
Koreaâs journey was a masterclass in learning what it is to selfaffirm. Itâs VERY difficult. Often, the world is shoving you all kinds of different ways while youâre trying to assert your own identity to people. Korraâs growth into becoming who she was in Book Four was outstanding and incredibly DEEP in terms of development.
Hot take: Legend of Korra was better than The Last Airbender. At least in my opinion. And not just because of the gays.
The grey morality spectrum of Korraâs adversaries as well as their startling amount of complexity added so much character to the stories. It hurts a lot of times to be listening to character motives and understanding a degree of where theyâre coming from despite the truly heinous nature of their actions. TLA didnât have as much of that (Ozai and Azula were pretty obviously bad).
Zukoâs growth never stopped. People thought his arc was over once TLA ended. Nah, Zuko kept learning every day.
Everyone needs a friend like Bolin.
Zaheerâs greatest punishment was watching his friends and loved ones die before him, failing in his goal, and then spending the rest of his days restrained in a cold cell deep underground with no freedom to be found. I doubt anyone will ever write a villain as good as him, but he 100% deserved everything he got and more.
Ideals define you. What actions you take to support those ideals defines you even more.
Asami is what CEOâs and technocrats should be. Never once heard her gloat about her wealth or station. Never once flaunted her money. Literally, the FIRST THING we see her do is use her money to apologize to the guy she hit on her bike, buy him a nice dinner and a nice suit, and support the team he plays on so they can live their dream. The rest of the show, she uses her position and technical knowledge to support the city, protect its welfare and population, and assist its development.
The craving for power never stopped. Kuvira is the perfect example. Kuvira was on the brink of becoming the next Fire Lord Ozai. You know she wouldnât have stopped once she took Republic City. She would have started seizing other nationâs territories as well. War would have started all over again.
Toph told a great story. A lot of people thought having Toph turn into Chief of Police was a bad choice. Yes, it was. But not because of bad writing. Obviously, she didnât fit there. Obviously, it wasnât where she belonged. Look at how broken her family was. Lin and Su both struggled with their families. Toph was an abrasive human being and she knew that better than anyone. You would be too if your parents kept you locked in the house, tried to kidnap you, and disowned you just for wanting more freedom. Was she a badass? Absolutely. But having a family is hard for someone who never really had a good example of one in the first place.
Red Lotusâ audacity to think they could put down the Avatar in the Avatar state was greatly misplaced. To think that Korra practically soloed them in that cave. The only reason Zaheer got the upper hand was because of the poison he put in her and the fact that she was literally contending with her spiritual self at the same damn time. Different circumstances, Korra would have dunked on his ass. Same with Kuvira. Korra was a UNIT of an avatar and the only reason she lost to them was due to underhanded and grievously dirty tactics and trauma responses from Korraâs brain.
