How long have you been a tech for? - Hales

Hi love !! ♥︎ I'm actually still training! I did kennel for about 2 and a half years and have been slowly transitioning to tech the past 4-5 months. But even while I was kennel, I was basically a vet assistant on the side and held for x-rays, blood draws, sub fluids, ultrasounds, and went to VMX before I was out training!!

I'd say it has its ups and its downs-! As does any job, I suppose. The best part is probably the learning. I adore being able to learn from the techs and doctors at my clinic. I feel very privileged that all of the Dr's where I work are AMAZING people. I'd say if it weren't for them and the techs being so willing to teach about what they're doing, I'd have a lot more apprehension about it. I witness things and feel SO privileged to be watching it all happen? Watching the techs intubate patients, refill and fill medication, catheterize, euthanize and take it in stride as the day goes on, work with drugs so efficiently. Ugh. I know it sounds weird but I admire it a LOT and hope to be as well versed in the field. Its amazing how we're basically dentists, nurses, pharmacists, ultrasound techs, and more.

The cons are probably how demanding and stressful it is? My grandma calls it feast or famine. Nothing could be happening one day, then the next we have 4 work in euths, someone ruptured a spleen...no wait. 3 dogs did....we have to send one to the emergency room. We're all staying an hour past close too sometimes, etc.... sometimes working with patients can be stressful when you need 6 people to get blood from a 16lbs dog! But I think having a really good team kinda makes or breaks you. In my case, it's making me. I've had my little scuffles with the team, but they're receptive and listen and do their best too

That reminds me I had a very similar issue the other day with getting a catheter in a small dog with 4 other techs (small team). They're crazy!! 🫠 Just why won't you stay still. 🫠

You do NOT need to be certified in the state of FL — I know there's a lot of controversy about it though. I don't think we have one certified tech on our team....? Just techs who have either been doing it for 20-30 years and the people they've trained 😩

Yea, we just had the local mobile ultrasound techs (super nice duo) come by and dx a 13yr Husky with mets on the liver. It's so sad. In the last month we've done like 4-5 splenectomies on large dogs.

Here in AZ, our techs DON'T need to be certified either. I have no issues with people not being certified. It just means you went through schooling. We don't even use a lot of the stuff we learned. Lol

What's your favorite part of the job? Or part that you enjoy doing?

Hmm the part I enjoy doing the most is probably the hands on stuff. I really wanna learn to pull blood as I've only done it once. I enjoy pulling up vaccines and watching Dr's do wound care, how they all have their own little methods. I really want to be a surgery tech one day too, but that'll come much much later I'm sure!

What's your favorite part? What part did you struggle with the most while you were learning?

I mean, who needs a spleen *shrugs* The hands on stuff is the best! I cannot wait for you to nail corgi arms. You are gonna rock it! Surgery is so cool. But can be stressful too.

My favorite part has to be treatments, x-rays, lab work, etc. But I really really enjoy talking to the owners. I never thought I'd enjoy doing that (introverted) but, it makes me happy. I love explaining what's going on, why we want to do certain things, educating, and being there for them when there are difficult situations. Occasionally I'll get in trouble for taking too long in a room because I'm talking to them. Haha.

How many doctors do you have at the practice? Are you GP?

Reminds me of one of our Dr's 😈 she's always taking FOREVER in the rooms or on the phone. She is a chatterbox, and the techs are always sighing about it but it's so endearing.

CORGI ARMS..are you telling me thats why it took 3 techs to figure out how to place a catheter on one of our corgi euths?! I've noticed that drawing blood on cats is hit or miss. We usually do a back leg, but more than half the time they won't bleed or it drips so agonizingly slow!

We currently have 4 doctors so long as nothing happens to them! (If they aren't in the hospital, their partner is). We are a GP/we also take walk ins with the understanding that there may be an urgent care fee or that we may only be able to stabilize a patient before sending them to the ER. But for the most part we're appointment only.

Corgis, basset hounds, Dachshunds, honestly any dog that has bowed legs. Their anatomy is so messed up so it's always really freaking hard to find a vein. And then it'll roll away and it's so stupid. 😤

That's really cool!! That sounds like our clinic too. GP but handles emergencies if need. Mainly appointments as well.

Summary: Your prosthetics malfuction during a mission. Echo helps you even through your stubborness.

Stupid.

How could you be so fucking stupid.

You knew the salt from this planet would be too much for your prosthetics. Echo had made a point to warn you before, to try and tell you to make sure they were protected. Wrap them up, don’t go in the water if you can avoid it, dry it properly…

But you’d brushed him off, more focused on the mission. The mission was more important than you, you could deal with the consequences later.

He was right tho, as he usually was.

In your defence, it had been fine.

Mostly.

It wasn’t until half way though the walk back to the havoc that it really started acting up.

The mixture of sand and salt had somehow made it into every single joint of the leg, making it all stiff and gritty.

The salt in the thick misty air alone would be enough to give you problems, but the fact that you’d been stupid enough to wade through the water instead of waiting on shore like Echo didn’t help.

The whole walk back to the Havoc was a fight. Painfully slow, the joints in the leg stiff and gritty. Every step you took let out this horrific screeching sound.

You could feel Echo’s eyes watching you the whole walk back, but you chose to ignore it.

Wrecker had offered to give you a piggy ride back but you refused, too stubborn to accept the help.

Yes, you had made a mistake, but you were going to manage on your own. You always had, you weren’t going to stop now.

The sight of the ship on the horizon almost brought tears of joy to your eyes. The rest are slightly ahead of you, up the stairs and already rushing around as they prepare for take off.

You grit your teeth as you force yourself to climb up the steps, finally making your way to your bunk and practically falling onto it.

Echo quietly makes his way towards you, also sitting on his bunk opposite you.

He catches your eye like he wants to say something.

You sigh, still slightly out of breath from your strenuous walk back, your shirt sticking to your sweaty skin “Please don’t Echo. I can’t do a lecture right now”

He lifts his hands in surrender “I wasn’t going to”

You send him a look that says ‘yeah sure you weren’t’ before you sit up enough to keep yourself steady as you feel the ship lift into the air.

You can still feel Echos eyes on you all during the take off sequence. You close your eyes to avoid his gaze, focusing on regaining your breathing and grateful for the excuse of take off to stay seated.

Waiting until the ship is safely in hyperspace, you stick a hand under your bunk, pulling your tool bag from underneath it as you start to pick out your supplies.

Pushing your hair out of your face, you look down at the knee joint of your prosthetic, grumbling to yourself as you notice the thick layer of rust formed around all the screws and hinges. It’s so bad you don’t even know where to start…

You feel Echos quiet eyes still on you as you pick up a screwdriver, making an albeit pathetic attempt at loosening one of the screws. It doesn’t budge one bit, thick rust gathered in all of the rivets of the screw and keeping it firmly stuck.

A lot of it is going to need to be replaced. The smart thing to do would be to try and take the whole prosthetic off first, and then focus on fixing what you could.

But you’re too tired and too annoyed to stop and think, instead you let the anger wash over you. Why could you never get used to this? Why couldn’t you just have a normal leg? You firm your grip on the handle of the screwdriver, and let the frustration take over as you attempt to force it harder.

Not surprisingly, the rusted screw head snaps, the screwdriver slipping and landing straight into your other thigh.

You drop it immediately, hand going to grip your thigh and eyes squeezing shut as you take a sharp breath in pain.

Echo is up and in front of you immediately.

You open your eyes enough to look up at him “I’m fine” you dismiss stubbornly

Echo just sighs, shaking his head as he kneels in front of you. He tugs at your hands until you let go, his hands replacing yours as he keeps a bit of pressure on your thigh. It’s not really a deep wound, more of a gash. But it is bleeding a bit, so he grabs a towel from your bunk and keeps it pressed down.

No told you sos, no snarky comments. Gentle and patient.

That’s something you’d always loved about Echo.

So calm, so understanding.

He barely ever shouted or lost his temper. Always so caring and kind.

Eventually he looks up at you, eyes meeting yours as he tilts his head.

“Why are you so damn stubborn, huh?”

There’s no malice behind the question, no anger. Just pure resignation.

Somehow, that hurts more.

“I’m sorry” you mutter, forcing your eyes to meet his “ I just- I hate not being able to just be normal you know?” You gesture down towards your prosthetic, a hint of disgust taking over your voice “I hate that this limits me”

His own eyes drift down to your metal leg before making their way back up to your face, a look of understanding filling his eyes “I get what you’re saying. Trust me I do” he reassures.

A beat of silence before he talks again “But you need to learn to look at it differently.” he explains gently “I understand it’s frustrating, I understand it makes you feel less than. But you can’t change it. It’s what makes you you.”

You nod, chewing on your cheek, a nervous habit you’ve had for a ms long as you can remember. You do understand what he’s saying. But it’s soo much easier said than done.

He smiles a little sadly, thumb gently swiping over your cheek as he turns your face to face him as he calls your name

“It takes time. Be patient with yourself. I promise you’ll get there”

You nod, smiling gently although it doesn't quite reach your eyes “Yeah, I can try”

He smiles, hand drifting to the back of your neck and giving it a little squeeze “Good, that’s a start”

He turns his attention back to your thigh, listing the towel enough to take a peak. The small gash seems to have stopped bleeding at least.

He stands, moving back to his bunk to pull a med kit out from underneath.

You sit up straighter “It's ok Echo. I can do it myself-”

He gives you a look that immediately silences you. He wordlessly kneels back in front of you, opening the med kit and retrieving an antiseptic spray.

You watch silently as he sprays it on the gash, gently scrubbing away the dried blood and dirt.

“I used to feel the same” he breaks the silence, attention still on the wound as he talks “Still do sometimes”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah” he admits “I understand how you're feeling. But the same thing that you think is a curse can be an advantage. If you let it”

His eyes flick up to you “You have to learn to use it”

You watch in silence as he finishes cleaning, picking up a bacta patch and carefully applying it. Once he's done he looks back up to you, giving you a gentle smile when he sees you already looking at him.

“Thank you” you say “And not just for taking care of that” you add, gesturing to the bacta patch. You take his hand in yours, squeezing it slightly “Thank you for understanding, for putting up with me”

He smiles, chuckling lightly as he shakes his head “No problem darling. We gotta stick together, yeah?”

You nod, smiling as you give his hand another squeeze “Yeah, together.”

He nods, standing back up and putting his hands on his hips as he looks down at your prosthetic. It really is gonna need a lot of work.

“Let's eat first” he decides eventually “Stay put and I’ll bring you a plate. Then we can tackle fixing what we can.”
