Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Now’s your chance to read it around the time it’s based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
I used to set this one for second year undergraduate creative writing seminars on writing science fiction on a double bill with Octavia E. Butler's "Bloodchild" and no-one here gets out alive.
STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982)
“As a matter of cosmic history, it has always been easier to destroy than to create.”
Doctor McCoy
The only star trek medicine i respect is trauma surgeon Bashir's bare below the elbows Defiant era look
i have to say, the enormous, dried corpse of a fish hanging from the ceiling doesn't really make me crave sushi for dinner. but what do i know.
and anyway, why is it still up there? is a load bearing fish, in that removing it would trip enough security systems to make the whole process too annoying to go through? do they just think it looks kinda cool? does the crew decorate it for the holidays with fairy lights and hats and shit?
Maybe Garak's fed them some bullshit that it's a tremendously rare specimen, of huge scientific significance, and they keep trying to contact someone at a university back on Cardassia Prime only to get polite but baffled rebuffs.
Maybe there's the Bajoran equivalent of a traffic cone that regularly gets put on it, in the manner of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow, or Jake and Nog carry out a series of escalating dares involving clothes, jewellery, underwear, etc.
I have, in all my long years of watching DS9, never noticed that bloody fish, which tells you exactly how good video tape quality is, something about the state of my eyesight, and also more generally about my powers of visual observation.
the duke of wellington escapades are introduced to the station by bashir, and quickly banned by sisko after a late-night incident involving julian, o'brien, jadzia, a climbing harness, a lot of rope and an astronomical bill from quark's. this leaves room, of course, for jake and nog to take over - their best work is a huge, inflatable swim ring around its middle.
O'Brien can't bear to be outdone by a couple of kids and doubles down with an exact replica of the fish - plus matching inflatable swim ring - hanging from the other end of the Promenade. Keiko tearing her hair out.
it's like the model of the alamo that he built in his quarters except ten times worse. it's way too big to fit into the turbolifts, even taken down into parts, so he has to climb through the jeffries tubes dragging one giant styrofoam rib behind him at a time. garak watches him put it up from his shop with a midnight snack of maki rolls drenched in jamok sauce.
"a little to the left, chief." "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP" etc.
In any case, I am now adding this into all my fanfics: "All right, meet you on the Promenade, right under the fish."
"Head, or tail?" (I guess the Prague citizen in me will never die.)
Bajoran whale? Trophy taken by a Cardassian and left hung up in the station as symbol of Bajoran strength?
The teeth aren't pointy, it's not a predator. It's something non-violent that the Cardassians took and killed and displayed.
This is from an end of the set they didn't show often, where Sisko enters the Prom if he comes from his quarters.
s1e10 The Nagus (the one when Nog drops out of school and Jake teaches him to read)
These tags intrigued me enough that I went out to find it. Here it is: the Cardassian Sushi Ad.

Bashir Smiling (2/2)

Don't worry, folks, Doctor Bashir will have a good time in the series finale. Look at him, he's having a great time! Look at all the fun he's having! Song: Weird Fishes / Arpeggi by Radiohead
This is why Sisko is the greatest to ever do it, you don't see any other captains taking a second to force on their Customer Service Smile™
