6. what books have you read in the last month?
well. this hurts to say but like. i've only successfully read about 20% of a book in the last month unfortunately. it's been very very difficult to read ever since i started my new job, and i'm still figuring out how to balance the corpo 9-5 with things like reading and writing (which is in part why i started this blog, to force some creativity upon myself)
said book is The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, which I'm enjoying so far, though it isn't quite as good as his other works
10. do you have a guilty fav?
nope! i don't feel guilty about any book i like. are some series as good as others? of course! (like i thoroughly enjoyed the red rising series but it's not god's gift to literature or anything) but guilt? never
15. recommend and review a book.
so the series that has haunted my memories the most since i finished it is unquestionably Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders, or books 4-6 of Realm of the Elderlings. Genuinely extraordinary in how they weave charcterization into plot and narrative and how you just know the characters and love and hate them with such intimate passion. i've never loved characters so fiercely and hated others so vehemently, i still narrow my eyes when i find out someone's name is kyle as a result
now part of why it haunts me is because it's subject matter is dark and bleak. it's a story about patriarchy and misogyny and it holds nothing back on such a world, but it handles such content, even at it's bleakest and most brutal, with a kind of respect you just don't see in fantasy much. part of my ongoing thesis that women just write these things better than men, especially compared to hobb's contemporaries in the genre and years published.
unfortunately there are some disappointments in the trilogy, largely in how certain characters' arcs are rushed towards the end and kind of sweep over some really intense trauma because of how long book 3 was getting, and that is the other part of why this series has plagued me so. it's so, so close to being perfect. alas.
but yeah i'll take any excuse to ramble about these books. can you read them independent of realm of the elderlings? yes. should you? FUCK no. Really just red RotE it's really good and i haven't even finished it
but do your diligence and read some content warnings in advance. it's a tough read at times and i can handle a ton of shit in fiction, but i definitely wish i'd known some things in advance going in.
19. most disliked popular books?
i mean most romantasy unfortunately is bad, and not even in a particularly fun way. the ones that are good or at least enjoyable have a bad tendency of getting worse in sequels because the authors have no functioning editor in their corner and are trying to force things out quickly, and thusly they get worse over time
here's a specific example because i'm petty: the serpent and the wings of night is...just boring? and it's relentlessly boring. it's basically underworld meets the hunger games, and manages none of the entertainment of either. the romance is boring, the smut is boring, the characters are boring. awful
also if i may be unrelatedly petty: sex scenes in romantasy are uniformly boring. god, all of them are just so bland. it's like they're trying to fuck some excitement into a gravel driveway

viv: oh man. her first time was a calculated exchange: sleep with the cleric that has been putting the moves on her in order to ensure she sticks around long enough to heal the half-melted face. easy bargain, right? all that followed made it so not worth it, that woman was awful to be in a relationship with. so much so that viv had her own memory modified to forget who she was. not that moment, she lives with that, but it's a regret for sure. her first time with a man was ivo, and it was genuinely the best sex she ever had up to that point so that's a very good development in viv town
min: i think that min's first experiences all came as a young adult alone in the world after the family split apart, probably another mercenary in the mercenary underground, and it was while min was in one of their disguises. fun and all, but not exactly intimate. that's how most of their experiences played out, brief physical flashes in the pan that are easily forgotten. only when jynna came around did they have sex in their own body, and that was a revelation of biblical proportions

viv: she is the kind of woman to where lingerie all the time. every day. for those 26 or so years where she had no partner and no hookups? every day. now that ivo is around, she just gets more expensive sets and more revealing, crazier sets.
min: they would have such fun with this tbh. when they and jynna are having fun min already has a tendency towards wearing the guises of hot people they know to have sex with jynna, so adding lingerie to the list is a very easy jump
aliex: i think he's pretty boring about it tbh. just shorts, not much else. don't think he'd enjoy wearing anything fancy just to get rid of it, so it's not really a factor for him

viv: honestly i think she'd have fun with it. as the original self-hating woman in my cast, she'd enjoy being someone else for time to time. she mostly enjoys just forgetting any form of identity while intimate, and that's the main appeal, but it can be a fun indulgence from time to time. magic helps. disguise self, alter self, etc, she'd have a ton of fun using magic to enhance such scenes. honestly using magic would make it hotter and make her more into it
min: well, as above, they do turn into the hot people they and jynna know and have sex that way, so i think it's safe to say they definitely enjoy roleplaying. it just isn't the number 1 think they want, which is sex as themself with someone who knows and loves that specifically

caturix: i reckon he was a young man, full of bravado and nerves, no doubt trying to impress whatever woman it was with (and probably failing). Definitely spontaneous, but with someone he'd probably had his eye on for a minute and reciprocated, an unplanned climax (haha) that he doesn't regret but he sure wishes he gave a better show of himself in!
maven: keeping spoilers minimal (hi fellow players) it was with a man she was in a relationship with, and she didn't feel much of anything tbh. just oh. that happened. uh. where's the good part? and then living in comphet for awhile. her first time with a woman was like that scene in ratatouille where he mixes flavors for the first time and the color grading of the movie changes, just life altering and a real wake up call about what she likes in life
aliex: i need you to know i'm so thrilled you asked this for him. I think aliex waited until he left home as a young man to fight in the god war, and probably hooked up with a fellow soldier along the way. he discovered a couple of things that i will illustrate using the mechanics of DnD 5e: he has a 20 dex, so his physical prowess is very immense. He has a 20 wisdom, so he knows exactly what to do and when to do it. with his gloves on, and honey, they stay on, he has a 20 con, so he lasts until he says otherwise. no regrets about finding out he's an energizer bunny of sex, going forever and better than most people alive (i headcanon for sure that he is the best at sex of all my ocs, no question)
5. Has your OC ever had an experience â or been exposed to an idea â that awoke something in them sexually - or led to them developing an unexpected kink or preference?
caturix: one bit of caturix lore that came up some time ago in session was when he implied that he may have had a threesome after a funeral before he met arsenia, so i'm gonna say grief sex as a thing he's very about was discovered that way
maven: aside from just, you know, women. I think she discovered she's very into leaving bite marks on a partner when she saw setra flirt with someone else when they were in their "off again" part of on-again-off-again. she's a biter confirmed, you heard it here first
aliex: given that a long of his experiences were in army camps or in roadside taverns packed with people, i think he naturally discovered a certain degree of exhibitionist tendencies just by nature of close proximity to a thousand strangers, it increases the odds of someone walking in or interrupting you. so public/semi-public sex is the kink discovery of the day

caturix: i think he'd be down for it and would give it his all, but he's a very bad actor and i think it would devolve into a comedy of errors on all fronts, ultimately leading to some very giggly sex as themselves when they both gave up
maven: honestly, i think she'd take to roleplay so seriously. a chance to engage in intimacy while dedicatedly not being herself. how have i never thought of this before for her. she'd be so into it. so into it. the best sex of her life was probably because of it. genuinely if she could master getting into character for a scene she'd be so turned on just by nature of her stresses not being as present
aliex: i feel like he'd try it, but idk if it would stick. for his amazing sex stats, charisma ain't one of them. he'd give it his all if a beloved partner wanted to, but it wouldn't be a regular thing i don't think

caturix: definitely not, he's modest in how he presents and dresses, and his beachwear kinda looks like the swimsuit outfits from clair obscur expedition 33, the bodysuit ones for men? yeah, not revealing. For all his confidence and prowess with his wife, that was private, just for her and him, and even before her he wanted those moments to be just for their participants
maven: if someone saw her in an intimate moment she would stop having sex for like 15 years, and that isn't hyperbole. i don't think she would go to a beach that was frequented by others, her swimming is relegated to private streams or ponds in the forest where the Fellowship temple is, and she just wouldn't wear anything to do that if she was confident she was alone. sometimes she doesn't even want her partner to see her, let alone exhibitionism

caturix: for much of his life i think he was utterly unafraid and completely confident. with age, however, i think he started to get some performance anxiety when it comes to the natural impacts aging has on sex. like, he's an older man, some things don't always work the way the way they used to, and that's something he'd definitely have struggled with. he'd redouble his efforts on the things that still reliably work, both because he'd feel bad but also to hide such difficulties, at least until arsenia caught on and made him talk about it more
maven: it's always the wash of misery that follows the oblivion bliss, the gradual fading into reality and remembering yourself and all your problems. she doesn't deserve to feel good, why did she do that? she probably avoids opportunities to have sex and intimacy because she's so used to that dread overtaking the niceness of such moments and crapping on whatever relationship she's in/the company of whoever she's with at the time
6. How would your OC respond to being offered a large payment from an admirer in exchange for performing a striptease, posing nude or something yet more daring?
caturix: he would laugh and assume you were joking, and then awkwardly be like "well i'm flattered but, uh, no." that's for arsenia, and arsenia only! (if she asked, he'd do it for free)
maven: she would stare at you like you implied something quite distasteful about her. like "what about me indicates that i would accept this?" abject confusion and more than a little disapproval. she has trouble with the basics with a trusted partner, let alone something like a performance for coin

maven: i think maven actually is the one to initiate a lot when she's in a relationship. i think setra especially was very aware of her intimacy issues and wouldn't press for much unless maven was really vocal and wanting it. post-breakup, maven wouldn't make a move on someone at all. she would potentially be receptive if a woman wanted to hook up, as she's in a semi-death wish state of "well i may never get it again so why not," but you've gotta shoot your shot at this point

viv: she likes big arms and strong hands, best displayed hefting and flipping through books. she likes someone nearly as smart as her, but a smart person with muscles? she's a goner. if she sees you pick up a stack of library tomes she'll be like "ooo me next please put me on the shelf." more recently (ivo related) if she sees a man with chest hair it will have the same effect on her as a woman she's into's cleavage. she will be caught staring and she will be embarrassed about it. conversely, she's utterly repulsed by anything foot related. just keep them away from her and don't draw attention, no thank you
min: min is most drawn to someone's neck. if they're attracted to you and you're wearing a low collar, they are actively thinking of biting it and sucking on it. always. jynna's neck gets a lot of attention gonna be real. i've been trying to think of anything they specifically wouldn't be interested in, but honestly if they're into you they're into all of you
caturix: caturix, canonically, likes a fuller figure and jot that down. canonically, he also is not into slender people. his wife was not slender, and she was the most beautiful woman to ever live, and if you don't resemble her you're just not interesting to him physically

viv: historically it's 50/50. with her first relationship she tended to be more passive and was initiated upon once she gave the first signs of consent. now, that relationship was bad for other reasons, but it definitely sapped her confidence in such things for...26ish years? it took her that long, and dying of a terminal magic sickness, to make the move on ivo, and she's been pretty forward with him afterwards, leading the way until she tells him to lead on, after which she straps in gets ready for the railing she's about to receive
min: also 50/50 but much more confident about it. if they want you and want to initiate, they'll do it and it'll be hot. if they want you to initiate and you do, they'll roll with whatever you're gunning for. I think they're less confident in their true changeling form, but their marriage with jynna has helped with that a ton
caturix: the phrase "grandpa was a stallion back his prime" was uttered on at least 3 occasions in his campaign, and he definitely made the first move on many a woman before arsenia showed up and took charge of him for the first time. there was never anyone else after her, and they switched back and forth in making the first move, but man oh man did he like it when she did

viv: so, viv can be impatient, but what she really needs is for someone to edge her for like hours before getting to the proper fucking. she might be wanting to just get on with it, but she isn't gonna interrupt the work being done. ivo lives for that, so they're set!
min: i feel like min and jynna can do foreplay for all eternity before they have kids, especially when min indulges in their tendency of swapping bodies to have sex with her multiple times a session. different bodies mean different sensations in foreplay, no? so that takes a lot of time, and if i know jynna she would indulge that time for days. once the kids are around there's less time, so if the mood is on then it's ON right now and without delay
caturix: caturix would do nothing but foreplay on arsenia, he was all about giving. it was almost a disappointment to get to the penetrative sex or for her to do things to him, because he's just that involved with pleasing her. sometimes that's his preference, he'd rather go down on her than have sex sometimes. now if she wanted sex, it's on, but if she's enjoying the foreplay he's giving her, he'd be quite content to stay right where she wanted him until the sun came up and set again

maven: i feel like maven has very dexterous fingers, lots of practice picking pockets and picking locks, as well as handling knives and other assorted weapons. she's usually decently steady, but when something is picking at her varying anxiety points she'll start quaking for sure. her recent experience in a dark forest was a good example of her having a tremble for a long period of time. there's some roughness from her lengthy years of training and fighting, but she generally takes good care of them
caturix: calloused, rough, and dry as all hell tbh. all that time in the forge, doing manual labor, swinging hammers and working metal, it adds up over time. tons of blisters that he's picked at over the years, scars from a variety of nicks and cuts. very strong, very firm grip, with occasional trembles from nightmares or other death curse related traumas
viv: viv could be a hand model. soft, manicured, well kept and cared for. she has magic servants dedicated specifically for such upkeep, and she is resolute in sticking to those routines. I like to imagine when she casts bigby's hand it looks that way too, just arcane, giant, and mean

maven: she never speaks of it because she's internalized it, but she's afraid that the shame she was indoctrinated to feel as a youth is justified. she believes that it is, but there's comfort in other people thinking otherwise, you know? if someone confirms for her externally that she's right and she should be sorry for having been born, then it becomes much more real and soul crushing
caturix: that the island will come back. he and friends sent chult out of the world to a fate of war and revolution, where the party's friends and allies were entrusted to finish the fight in another realm, but what if they lose? if they lose and the island comes back, the horrors will be so much worse, the plague will be so much worse, and the enemy will know his name this time
viv: that her friends will see her for the wicked soul she is. she's not a good person, but her party believes she is, and she clings to that desperately. she knows she does evil things, justified in her own mind and in many others', but she does bad shit a lot. if they turned on her for it, it would sap so much of the life from her and it would untether her from the vestiges of goodness she has in her heart

maven: obvious ones aside, she will not forget her first romantic partner, who was a man before she realized she was into women only. i cannot detail more, but she cannot forget him even if she wishes to
caturix: there was a satyr he befriended when fighting the death curse, who departed with chult to fight in the following revolution against the cursed god of that island's world. he misses her, she was fun, kind, and absolutely terrifying. she once implied that she collected ears on an adventure when he asked about her situationship. you can't forget a person like that!
viv: her brother filnos. the sight of his immolation before her eyes is the kind of thing you can't ever heal from or pry off the surface of your mind. all her genius is forged in the shadow of his memory, because he was always the smarter of them as children. what would he have become if he'd lived?

maven: man. all her happy memories are coated in shame and guilt, so it's hard to say she loves talking about any of them. all her memories of aeria are happy, and she does get some relief sharing them, so just anything about her i'll say
caturix: he loves to talk about arsenia, and how he fell in love with her when he first set eyes on her. she was trying to start a bar fight because someone had pissed her off (she was right) and he didn't try to break it up, but he sure as hell made sure no one stopped her from beating ass. then he offered to get her a drink and they just started talking and talking into the night, and it was magic
viv: she absolutely loves to cackle about how her friends' first kiss happened. it was an accident, since one of them has a beak, being an aarakocra, and her culture decreed that touching your wings to another person's wings was the equivalent of a kiss. the other, a half-orc who grew wings via magic, did not know this. viv did, and it was hilarious

maven: that it wasn't her fault. it wasn't her fault that her birth happened the way it did, it wasn't her fault that *censored* it wasn't her fault that aeria was killed. it's so hard for her to accept that she's anything but the cause of all the ruin in her world
caturix: that he has a tendency towards immaturity. he can be reactive and impulsive when pressed, and while his emotionally responses are justified, he rides those waves of feeling to heights that are really not ideal sometimes, and he doubles down when pressed on this
viv: that she can stop at any time, she's done quite enough when it comes to gaining knowledge, power, and control over the world. she has more power and security behind the scenes than maybe anyone alive at this point. she could just retire and study for fun, but she keeps clawing for more because she feels she must. maybe one day she'll have that realization, but i doubt it

viv: home is two people, her party members and closest friends. she's not around them as often as anyone would like, but she's trying to be better about that especially as she takes on their son as a wizard apprentice. those two are home, no location nor any other person qualifies. the rest is just where she's staying, but those two are home to her
