Storyville - Defying the Cutting Season

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been illegal in Tanzania since 1998. But every year thousands of families still plan to have their daughters cut, an ordeal that could cost them their lives. The ‘Cutting Season’ takes place during the December school holidays.

During this time hundreds of girls are saved from FGM by the police, the government and the work of the Safe House. It is run by Rhobi Samwelly, who was herself a victim of FGM, and now, not only does she valiantly run the safe house but she also works with the local police to rescue and protect girls at risk while arresting the parents and cutters.

But they have a tough and dangerous job and old customs die hard. Men believe that girls must be cut to reduce promiscuity and cut girls command twice the bride price in cows as uncut girls. Girls like Rosie, just 12 years old, have had to make the most difficult choices of their young lives - run away from home, not knowing if they will ever see their families again, or submit to female genital mutilation and child marriage.

These brave and courageous young girls are fighting against a tradition that goes back thousands of years. They are standing up for their human rights and fighting for change in their community.

The Safe House is the one safe place they can escape to.

Just for some context, this is by no means an isolated case; animal farms have a devastating impact on their surrounding communities. Large farming facilities produce more than 400 different gases, all as a result of the amount of waste they produce, which pollutes local streams and waterways. The real concerns  are hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia and carbon dioxide. Communities surrounding these facilities are constantly close to hydrogen sulfide, a gas that can cause flu-like symptoms, while high concentrations or exposure can lead to brain damage. Methane can lead to vision problems, heart palpitations, brain damage, trouble breathing, and, with enough exposure, death. 

Animal agriculture industries and councils know this, and so establish them in communities least likely to be able to mount a legal challenge. This means that these facilities disproportionately effect impoverished communities and people of colour, and counties with larger black and lationo populations are home to more factory farms. When these facilities are established, they immediately drive down land values due to the known health issues they cause, meaning that many residents can no longer afford to sell their homes and relocate.

When people try to speak out against these corrupt industries either on behalf of these communities or on behalf of animals, they are met with legal action and often even criminal charges. These “ag-gag” laws are devastating for the human victims of animal agriculture as well for farmed animals, but the the meat and dairy industries have such an enormously powerful political lobby that they are able to influence politicians into passing legislation which best serves their own interests, at the cost of human and animal lives.

Catsugi is really really sick (the bottom picture is him right now, he can’t breathe, hasn’t eaten in days, we have to force-feed him water, he’s bleeding profusely from the mouth–I think it’s an upper respiratory infection but he also has cerebellar hypoplasia and we don’t have records on him so idk if he has any other undying conditions that could make an infection fatal) and we’re freaking out, like he has an appointment with the vet in 6 hours but my girlfriend isn’t home from work until right before that and she has the car, so if there’s an emergency before that then I can’t really do anything about it (but I am currently downloading uber to see if anyone can run me to the animal hospital just in case, although we live in a smaller town so idk if anyone is around) and we really don’t have the money to take him, so paying for the appointment and whatever he needs means not paying one of our bills and idk what to do and I’m panicking

I literally never do this but please consider helping us out if you’re able so that we don’t have to worry about money on top of worrying about him, I can send videos and more details about him being sick right now, or about his CH condition or anything else if you want proof or whatever. he’s our baby and we’re so so worried about him (we just lost a beloved kitty DiNozzo about 5 months ago to a heart disease and we’re still heartbroken, we can’t lose another baby so soon so we’re freaking out)
