farewell

He had played that scenario in his mind countless times during moments where he was stuck in the bed, groaning in pain or sleeping deeply under the effect of the painkillers. The moment where he would see Julia Heartily again...because there was no chance in a thousand hells he wouldn't bring the whole world upside down only so he could stare in her eyes for a few seconds once more.
And now there she was, staring at him like he was some sort of fan who was a regular in that bar just to see her. Funnily enough, that was Laguna's case. He had lost count of how many times Kiros' and Ward would sit there with him, arms crossed, and watch as their friend would be captivated by the dress and the voice. It was needless to say that her reaction made his heart freeze.
"You used to come and see me play all the time, didn't you?"
It was a hard slap on his face. Did she not remember him? How she outright walked towards him after her performance and invited him upstairs to her room? How he fell asleep on her bed while speaking about his passions and all the things he wanted to do in life? Did he dream all these things?
"Oh...Uhmm...yes.." he said with a delayed smile appearing on his face. Maybe it was all on his mind. That fall was quite devastating after all. Who knows how hard he had hit his head.
"Loire?" A familiar voice sounded suddenly. The bartender stood behind the counter, polishing a glass. "That you? Hyne, you're alive you old wardog?"
Loire...?
The second the name was uttered, Julia's eyes widened in realization as all the pieces clicked into place. How many times had she wondered where her soldier had gone after he was whisked away from her so quickly on that fateful night? How often had she asked if anyone had seen him, or even knew who he was? Only the bartender was of any help, although he didn't know more than that one simple name that she'd nearly completely forgotten. She'd been certain that the war had called him away, only to never be seen again, but...
"It is you!" She blurted almost incredulously, taking an extra few moments to look him over and finally ended up staring at his eyes. Those were certainly the very same eyes she hadn't gotten nearly long enough to gaze into when she invited him up to her room all those years ago, she was certain of it now.
"You're the one who inspired me to actually put myself out there and write my own song. After we talked that night, and you were suddenly summoned away, I... I started to lose hope that we'd ever meet again." Julia spun in her seat to face him better, reaching out to gently take one of his hands in both of hers, as though to further convince herself that she wasn't imagining this reunion. "I hope this is real and not just my dreams playing tricks on me again."
To say that the past few years were life changing would be a huge understatement. Laguna could remember all of those incidents like they happened yesterday, if not even sometimes feel the phantom pain that echoed his past struggles when he was stuck on a bed. The recovery was slightly slower compared to Kiros' and Ward's who got back on their feet relatively quickly.
That was then. And now there was a whole different situation unfolding before him. During all those months marked by excruciating pain and a desire to give up completely, his mind tended to drift back to a very specific someone. It was silly really, how they met...how he would just forget how to act like a normal person whenever Julia had her eyes on him as she blessed the customers of the bar with her angelic voice. And now there he was again, back in Dealing city in a desperate attempt to reminisce about the past if not even have a glimpse of it.
Would it even be possible that she was still there? He had heard about her career gradually developing...maybe Dealing was just a stepping stone. And yet, as his eyes stared at the woman sitting at the bar and looking at her drink, he couldn't help but wonder. Was he just hallucinating? Maybe his mind was playing tricks on him, laughing at how stupid he was. But when their eyes met, there was no mistake.
Slowly, Laguna stepped closer to the bar. The man tending there arched his brows, possibly recognising a good old customer as the trio of Galbadian soldiers were regulars there. "Can I buy the next round?" He casually asked, standing a little further away and wishing inside. *Please, let that be you!*
Julia was used to being approached when she was alone, either by a fan expressing how much they enjoyed her music or an old regular who wanted to reminisce about those nights when she would serenade the bar. It didn't happen every time, but when someone approached, she would usually remain polite and cordial for as long as they wanted to engage, and then sent them off with a smile and best wishes. If Fury wasn't there, she normally kept to herself until she decided to leave.
This time, when her gaze was drawn from her glass by his question and she turned her head, she stared at him for a few moments as her mind processed the familiarity of his voice. It wasn't confirmation that her suspicions were correct, but even with the small distance he left between them, the resemblance to the memory of her beloved soldier was too striking to ignore.
"Y-yes, of course," she finally said once she found her own voice, patting the empty seat beside her. "Join me, won't you?"
Maybe he was just being polite, but now she had to know if she was imagining things. If this really was him, the one who had inspired her so greatly that she was able to put her feelings into song, then there was lots of lost time to make up for. "You used to come see me play all the time, didn't you?"

It’s been years since she played her last encore in Deling’s bar, and yet every time she settles herself on one of the stools just for a few drinks, there’s still the desire to sit down at the piano and play. A habit that was hard to break, even now.
She often liked to take time for herself after everything that had happened - especially with the strange flickers in her memory over the past few years that seemed so out of place, like there was a period of time that didn’t seem quite right. So she found herself more often than not just sitting at the bar for a few hours, nursing a couple glasses of wine and decompressing in one of the places that had once been her home away from home.
Motion towards the entrance turns her head, and while she would normally give a small glance at a stranger coming in and turn back to her drink, her eyes linger instead. There’s something tugging at the back of her mind, a sense of familiarity that makes her think she definitely knows him from somewhere. Could he be…?
No, surely not. Don’t be silly, Julia.
Rather than calling out and making a fool of herself, Julia returns her attention to her glass, downing the remaining half of her drink and setting it back down with a sigh.
At the end of the night, with her songs finished and her handful of regulars politely greeted, Julia situates herself at the closest stool at the end of the bar to the piano, occupying her wandering thoughts with a glass of wine that she’s already finished.
Once her drink is refilled, she thanks the bartender with a courteous smile and twirls the stem between her fingertips, casting yet another glance in the direction of the stairs with the hope that she might see him coming to see her once again.
A hope she’s held onto for so long, and yet here she sits by herself, hoping and praying that the last time they spoke had not truly been the last. But his booth has remained empty for quite some time now, and with every passing night, she begins to fear the worst, despite that one part of herself that holds onto that slim chance that they would have another chance to make up for lost time.
If only they’d started speaking earlier.
ooc; I totally got sidetracked today when I meant to be doing other stuff, but that meant doing things like making banners for Julia because I felt the urge to do something creative for her.
And of course, said banner has the melody for the section of Eyes on Me that I got her URL from~

Fury & Julia
Julia is 22 when Laguna gets pulled away. She is 28 at the time of her accident, and Rinoa is not quite 5. Considering they have Rinoa about a year after she last sees Laguna, and are married before that (which Laguna learns from Raine once he has recovered from his fall after a few months), the timing leads me to believe they had at least a decent sort of history to build on - some kind of spark that just ended up becoming a real connection once Julia was disheartened when she never saw Laguna again. I don't think Julia is the type to marry Fury just because she can, or that she feels like she can't do any better.
She is young and somewhat impressionable still, but I do not think her marriage to Fury is so spontaneous that there is not any real interest in both directions there to build on.
Julia was in a delicate and fairly emotional state, and Fury happened to be in the right place at the right time to lend her a shoulder to cry on. This was part of the driving force that brought them together - Fury’s support, and his encouragement to follow her dreams anyway, to break out of her comfort zone and bring Eyes on Me to life with her voice.
However, this doesn’t make Julia’s feelings for him any less genuine. She did have feelings for Laguna, but she also developed a love for Fury, too. She’s a kind and reserved person, and definitely felt some sort of attachment to him when he gave her support that Laguna could not. That was likely the kick that she needed to realize waiting for a soldier to come home would not make her happy, but Fury could, and did.
Julia was the popular and pretty pianist in Deling’s hotel bar. It’s entirely possible that Fury came to see her multiple times and was one of the regulars that she recognized, and eventually ended up befriending. She waited until Laguna expressed his interest to approach him, so it is likely she did the same for Fury (who was almost certainly not as hesitant to strike up conversation).
Their marriage did happen fairly quickly after Laguna left, and then Rinoa came along a year later, but I do not believe it was something they rushed into just to do it, without any genuine feelings.

It was a tall order, filling her mother — a mother that had by all accounts been dead since she was four — in on the events of a world in greater peril than she might ever have imagined. But Rinoa would do her best. Find a way to sum it up, or… perhaps she’d go into every detail. Greedily hoard as much of the time stolen from her as she could.
Rinoa glanced back over her shoulder toward the direction Squall had disappeared, keeping himself busy with visits to the weapon shop, visiting Ma Dincht for a bit, trying in general to stay out of their hair. She knew it was not Squall’s choice to be here, though he made no complaint of it. He was her security detail — the only reason she’d been allowed to meet her mother somewhere other than Garden grounds.
“I don’t know where to begin,” she admitted with a nervous chuckle, fingers curling against her thighs, leaving little red lines on her skin in their wake. “After you died, Daddy changed. He was always distant, but…well… you know how he is,” she spoke softly, her chin dipping toward her chest. “He sank himself into his work, cultivated those ties and lost touch with me somewhere along the way,” she admitted.
A sudden glance up to her mother signaled a thought and she added, “we’re okay now, don’t worry,” a smile spreading across her lips. “We’re still not close, exactly, but I don’t wish him any ill-will. We write each other sometimes,” she reassured with a wave of her hand. “I worry about him, though. Things with Galbadia have gotten worse, and I fear he might get caught up in them if he’s not careful.”
Goodness, it was difficult to keep things straight — she couldn’t say one thing without needing to explain another.
“There was another Sorceress War,” she ventured hesitantly. “This one struck a little closer to home,” brown eyes glanced between her mother’s own, letting that bit settle in.
It might have been funny, in a bittersweet sort of way, how Rinoa was the one who had to explain how the world currently worked to her own mother. Julia still was quite clueless, and admittedly very much naïve about anything that had occurred in the time that she missed.
She was still warring with the idea that her four-year-old had aged significantly in the blink of an eye, but chose to believe it anyway. It was easier that way.
Julia was willing to listen attentively all the same, her eyes still dancing over her daughter’s face as she talked. The initial mention of her husband’s name made her sigh wistfully, still wondering how he was, what he looked like now...how he would react to seeing her again, like this.
Rinoa’s description sounded like her Fury, even with the years that had passed - he’d been absorbed in his work ever since she met him, but never so much that she had to fight for his attention. At least, not until she disappeared from the picture, it seemed. Julia almost frowned, but Rinoa’s clarification stopped her from feeling like there was a rift between her husband and her daughter that needed mending. It wasn’t the best situation, surely, but at least they were still in contact, trying to make an effort; that was all she wanted.
Her brows furrowed at the mention of the war - the one she knew was so fresh in her mind; how could there have been another so soon? - and Julia canted her head, trying to figure out what Rinoa was trying to get at.
A little closer to home...?
“What do you mean?” She asked, unable to figure out her meaning even with a few beats of contemplation. Briefly, she wondered how involved her family had been, but clearly Fury was still alive and well, and Rinoa was currently sitting right across from her. What else was there? “Did something happen in Deling? Or to someone we know?”
