So so so many artists have older music leak and. Continue making new music anyway. Chelsea Wolfe. Metric. Radiohead at least three times. Nine Inch Nails at least twice (three times if you count the period when TR wasn't cool with the Broken movie and someone leaked a marked copy). Whether or not we get MCR 5 likely has nothing to do with this. They aren't going to get halfway through recording an album and then decide to quit music just to punish a small subset of their fans

In many circumstances I agree, and in this one we may still see it come to fruition, but like. We've seen fans kill bands' motivations by ruining the surprise for everybody before (a recent years example I can think of is Jack Stauber having a song leaked that was then canceled to a loss of motivation), in part because it knocks down the enthusiasm for a release since it's already been heard elsewhere. MCR and similar alt rock bands are definitely very "fuck the system, pirate what you can't afford" in terms of anticapitalism which helps our chances here in particular, luckily; however, even if we still make the release, it's still INCREDIBLY disrespectful behavior overall. If I'm to make a comparison, it's much like shortform content reposters that just repost a viral video from another account onto theirs with no credit. You'll still very well find the original creator IF they're large enough, but it doesn't make the act less scummy AND it's taken eyes and ears off of the *actual* creatives and their artwork they put so much love, time and effort into
