Steven Meeks notices something... different about himself when he reaches his teenage years and starts going to Welton. Nobody else notices it, not even Pitts, but he thinks something is really wrong. His brain betrays him-- makes him think things that he knows, logically, are incorrect or immoral, and the only way to stop it is to do things even his friends find odd-- retrace his steps in the exact number he walked the first time, wash his hands multiple times just to make sure there's no food left that could get him sick, organizes his pens by color in a specific holder despite Pitts' gift of a new painted penholder.
He thinks he's hiding it well, from his friends and the administration and his parents-- who have always thought he's been a little odd anyway-- until he meets someone who seems to see through his every move. That someone is Richard Cameron, who is infuriatingly observant and oblivious at the same time, somehow. All of a sudden, he slips up more easily-- makes a comment about not contracting germs, or tells Cameron one of his slightly less fucked-up thoughts. For some odd reason, Cameron doesn't seem to mind.
Neither of them brings it up, really, when they're studying together one night and Meeks snaps at Cameron because his pens aren't lined up in the right order on the desk, even though he knows it's not his fault-- but he did borrow one and put it back in the wrong spot and it's been irking Meeks the entire time, enough so that he can barely focus on homework. Cameron figures he's stressed, really, because he too gets stressed when things aren't right, so he just lines them up the way he knows-- has practically memorized at this point-- Meeks likes them and watches Meeks' face relax the slightest bit.
When he finds Meeks up late one night in the bathroom with hands that are scrubbed red and raw, he doesn't make him talk about it. He's not sure where to start anyway, because he's not sure if Meeks is doing it on purpose or not, if he wants to hurt himself like this. Instead, he just turns off the sink, takes Meeks' hands in his, and dries them off gently with the soft fabric of his shirt rather than the towel. Finally, he wraps him in a hug. Meeks' hands hover above his shoulders, never making contact. He doesn't mind.
There's one night, a night that Meeks is missing when they leave for the DPS meeting, and Cameron stays behind only to find him curled up near the top of the stairs, fingers tapping rhythmically on his knees. He sits next to him, and eventually they talk. About how Meeks is scared to go to the meeting because he doesn't want to accidentally mess something up, do something he shouldn't. About how he can't fall asleep, some nights, because he's not sure if the window is closed. About how he has to take the same path to chemistry each day otherwise it'll mess up the rest of his day. All Cameron does is nod, and listen. He doesn't understand, not really, but he can relate. To getting scared. To needing routines to function.
And so he adopts those into his own life as well. He checks Meeks' window every night and walks in front of him on the way to chemistry so there won't be people in the way and makes sure to spend extra time organizing his textbooks and pens and carries around extra of Meeks' soap. Meeks tells him he doesn't have to, but even someone as clueless as Cameron can tell he really appreciates it. And it helps. It helps, especially, to talk, when he's thinking things he shouldn't be thinking. He gets embarrassed, sometimes, but Cameron doesn't care. He reassures him with logic, and in Meeks' brain that helps. And eventually, he helps him gather up the courage to tell Pitts. Charlie. His parents-- or at least try to. No, Meeks isn't sure how he ever managed without Cameron, and he's not sure how he will after. He's the first one who understands, who doesn't consider him damanged because of it, who only minds it when things get bad, and offers up a helping hand when they do.

Humanity Already in “Hell”
The world in Iron Lung is already post-apocalyptic. Humanity has lost Earth and most habitable worlds, leaving only strange remnants of civilization. This setting itself feels like a form of judgment..not necessarily a literal biblical hell, but a universe where humanity is already living with the consequences of something terrible.
The ocean of blood becomes a powerful metaphor here. Instead of just being a horror element, it can symbolize the collective sins of humanity. wars, destruction, greed, or the unknown catastrophe that wiped out civilization. The submarine descending into that ocean feels like humanity descending deeper into the consequences of its own actions.
The Convict as a Symbol of Humanity
The convict protagonist is interesting because he’s not a hero. he’s a criminal. That makes him a good metaphor for humanity itself, which is flawed and guilty in many ways.
His journey into the blood ocean can represent: A forced confrontation with truth, a descent into guilt or moral reckoning, or Humanity being pushed to face what it has done.
The submarine is small, claustrophobic, and (will soon be) filled with blood seeping in. Which feels like there’s no escape from the consequences.
The Voices Telling Him to Hide the Truth
The voices that tell him to hide the evidence could symbolize society’s tendency to bury uncomfortable truths.
In a metaphorical sense, they represent things like: denial, propaganda, fear of accountability, or people choosing comfort over truth.
If the convict reveals what’s really happening under the ocean of blood, it would mean acknowledging the full horror of what humanity has become or created. So those voices try to stop that.
The Creature as the Force That Prevents Change
When the convict tries to do the right thing and reveal the truth, the creature kills him.
Symbolically, that creature could represent: the devil or evil resisting redemption, the system that punishes whistleblowers, or the idea that truth is dangerous.
My take is leaning towards something hopeful for humanity but in a darker interpretation, it might show that the world itself no longer allows redemption.
The Ocean of Blood as Sin
The imagery of blood everywhere, inside the submarine, outside it, surrounding everything, can represent the idea that sin or wrongdoing has completely saturated humanity’s world.
The convict being submerged in it is like humanity trying to struggle through a world built on its past mistakes. It’s messy, overwhelming, and almost impossible to escape.
The Evidence Rising at the End
When the evidence floats to the surface of the blood ocean, it suggests something important:
Truth eventually surfaces.
Even though the convict dies, his attempt to reveal the truth is not meaningless.
It implies that: truth cannot stay buried forever or redemption might come from trying, not from being perfect.
So the convict becomes almost like a martyr figure…someone flawed who still tries to do the right thing. instead of pure horror, the story becomes a kind of cosmic moral allegory about guilt, truth, and redemption.

Neil Perry as The Little Prince
Both of them are so pure-hearted and imaginative. They see the beauty and meaning in all things when others don’t. Neil, like the Little Prince, follows his heart (acting, poetry). But the world around him, especially authority, who doesn’t understand that purity. Both represent fragile idealism in a rigid world. He feels trapped, by adults and expectations. Leaving him longing for something authentic.
Todd Anderson as The Aviator
He start off quiet, unsure, and boxed in. And as he slowly rediscovers his imagination, The Aviator, learns to see again because of the Little Prince. Todd learns to find his voice because of Neil (and Keating). Both end up transformed by loss and love. But both were surely and deeply changed by someone free-spirited.
Mr. Keating as The fox
He teaches the most important lesson while guiding them, instead of controlling. The Fox teaches about connection and responsibility. Keating teaches “Carpe Diem”, to see life fully. They awaken something in the younger characters rather than force it. They teach them of something that is invisible, but essential.
Mr. Perry as The king
Both of them value authority, control, and status. Always believing they know what’s “best”. They represent adulthood without imagination and structure without understanding the heart.
Charlie Dalton as The Drunkard
Charlie like the drunkard, rebels against the system. They act out dramatically as a way to mask deeper discomfort. Charlie’s rebellion is loud. The Drunkard’s is quiet and circular. But both show how people cope when they feel stuck.
Knox Overstreet as The Rose
This one’s more symbolic as knox is driven by love and idealism and The Rose represents love that feels consuming and transformative. Both show how love can make someone brave… or foolish… or both.
Richard Cameron as The businessman
They value security over loyalty. The Businessman counts stars because he wants to “own” them. Cameron counts consequences. Both are thinking in survival, rather than soul. He represents the kind of adulthood that trades meaning for safety. Because he chooses order and self-preservation. He isn’t evil…he’s afraid.
Steven Meeks as The geographer
Intellectual. Observes more the he acts. Curious but cautious. The Geographer studies the world but doesn’t explore it himself. Meeks is thoughtful and analytical, he understands Keating’s ideas, but he processes them quietly. He’s the mind trying to make sense of the heart.
Gerard Pitts as The lamplighter
The Lamplighter keeps lighting and extinguishing his lamp because it’s his duty. Pitts follows along, quietly, steady and constant. He isn’t the loudest, but he’s present and devoted. There’s something gentle about both of them.
In the end, both stories leave the audience with the same question: what happens to the imagination we have when we are young?
The Little Prince suggests that it never truly disappears, it simply becomes hidden, something only a few people continue to see. Dead Poets Society shows how fragile that imagination can be, but also how powerful it is when someone encourages it. Both remind us that growing up does not have to mean losing the ability to see what is “invisible to the eye” the beauty, passion, and meaning that make life more than just rules and expectations.

(Face cam of Gordon appears in the corner. He is ALSO played by 90s Robert Sean Leonard-- just with a really bad fake grey mustache. The rest of his hair is not grey, for the record)
Gordon: Batman! Staff are saying Two-Face isn't in Arkham!
Robin: Holy mackerel, B-man! Two escapes in two nights! Any chance they're connected?

YAYAYAYAY YES OMG
- despite how along with the group knox goes, whenever he's talking straight to cameron he always is so kind even when cam is being a hater
- he offers to do the most random stuff to distract cam a lot of the time, cam thinks it's stupid usually but it always ends up helping
- cam helps with his history homework, they have a little unofficial study group together every week
- cam showed him his poem for english once (1) because knox insisted, knox proceeded to critique it which pissed off cameron but his edits really did help (he got an A on that poem btw)
- both of them can't sleep in the middle of the night often, not for any particular reason, but they run into each other in the hallways a lot then and just kinda chill in silence, they talk about the most random stuff sometimes (one time cam told him about the whole scholarship thing and knox just kinda went- oh. and then they proceeded to sit there in silence- cam just needed someone to listen ough :(()
- knox loves to steal his comb and toothbrush and stuff and cam gets so mad but knox has sm fun ragebaiting him😭
- its cams turn to ragebait knox when knox suddenly can't find his homework due the next day one night...
- basically complete opposites which means they understand each other pretty well
- knox gets upset at cam sometimes when cam is mad at charlie bc knox understands both of them, but cam only understands knox smth smth "why cant you see what hes feeling"
- both of them are great at listening when the other needs to talk (knox bc hes actually a good listener and cam bc he doesnt know what to say🥀)
- cam still has a friendship bracelet knox made him when he first joined the friend group
- and knox still has a birthday card from him from like years ago 💔
- they probably have each other's home phone numbers too so they call sometimes during breaks when either of them are bored/need a distraction
- they have a system going with things they get as gifts, knox usually gets stuffy things and cam gets stuff he thinks is corny and stupid with not much thought put into it, so they switch gifts when they come back to school sometimes (cam takes his letter opener and knox takes his record of songs cam doesnt even like)
- cameron makes fun of him for all his crushes but its amusing to him to watch knox fail after every one😭😭
- they wouldve played new york times games together and knox would suggest the most random things, which only work half the time so cameron either gets mad at him for messing him up or that he didnt get it himself smh🥀🥀
- knox succeeds in convincing cameron to accept his hugs a lot of the time (despite his claims that he hates hugs🙂↕️)
- also knox is one of the only people who can manage to distract cameron during an assembly or class,,, hed try to like throw wads of paper into his hood and stuff idk😭
- knox comes to his rowing practices sometimes to see charlie mostly, but he always congratulates cameron ough💔
- also knox is one of the only ones who can comfort cameron before he starts crashing out about something, he just kinda holds onto him and surprisingly the pressure actually helps and lets him take a couple breaths
- knox has to try hard not to cry when he's upset about something but cam always notices and helps him leave the room or smth so people dont see him cry
- if it was modern day they'd do those mandala coloring book thingies together even though charlie makes fun of them for it
- rip cam you wouldve loved calling knox a performative male 😔
- knox loses his ties and stuff a lot so cam always lets him borrow one when he needs
