“Gifted kid” means, “kid who learned fast when they were young so adults took that to mean they didn’t need any help at all, told them they should never ask for help, and accused them of laziness any time they did ask for help.”
The gifted program was a way for schools to deal with oversized classes. They picked out certain kids who they, the adults, decided didn’t need attention or teaching and then told the students this until they internalized it and stopped asking for help.
When those students didn’t learn study skills, failed classes, couldn’t complete homework, they were told it had nothing to do with competency or knowledge, but that it was a personality or effort issue. They were then shoved into the next class knowing even less, and suffered bad grades. Kids deemed “gifted” when they were young failed to thrive as they had been involuntarily chosen as the students who would be entirely neglected and expected to raise themselves.
I don’t understand the logic of making fun of people who were, as children, victimized by adults. “Gifted kids” were praised and groomed to never seek adult help or attention, and to blame themselves for their incompetence instead of the system. It was an abusive, lazy, and cheap method of weeding certain students out so the teachers could focus on fewer people.
Those who were deemed normal got proper attention from the teacher and ended up with better grades. If you spent time with teachers at all outside of normal class time, if your parents asked you about school or whether you had homework, or anyone helped you with projects or bought you supplies for them, if you ever had tutoring or help from someone on your homework, you are privileged, and your grades reflect that. “Gifted kids” show the grades of neglected children who were told it was their fault they couldn’t spontaneously learn and succeed the way no human child actually can.
It isn’t gifted kids vs normal kids. It’s all kids being split up and pit against each other while actually being mistreated by adults and the school system.
The gifted program did nothing but instill learned helplessness into kids.
I know the original post is meant to mock people who are ignorant about other countries but doing so by putting “gifted kids” down is insidious and further discredits kids neglected by the school system by painting them as arrogant when they’re just doing what they’re told.
