Back to School: How to Get an A*/8 or 9 in an English Lit Essay!
Happy September, everyone!
As we all get our gears in motion to start a new year, I thought I would share my top tips for scoring the highest marks in English Literature essays.Â
(P.S. Lots of these tips are applicable to other subjects too)
1. Donât write about the character as if they are real
Unfortunately, this is a common error in English Lit essays. It is absolutely imperative to remember that a character is not a person, but is a construct of the writer in order to present an idea or theme. No matter the question, you should be linking your answer back to the writerâs ideas and theme of the text, even if it doesnât seem obvious what the theme is on the first inspection of the question. Using the authorâs name frequently in your essay will demonstrate that you recognise the character is not a real person - âShakespeare portrays Macbeth as a tragic hero, as defined by Aristotle asâŠâ
2. Donât analyse the plot
Avoid analysing the plot or when things happen in the text. Donât write âWhen X happens it makes us think Yâ. Instead:
Analyse the writerâs use of language, structure and form to create meaning
Do a close language analysis of specific words/phrases, including a sound analysis (plosives, assonance, etc.)
Do a structural analysis of what happens when and why thatâs important (Freytagâs pyramid)
Do an analysis of form (stage directions, dramatic monologue, etc.)
3. Keep your answer relevant throughout
You need to be explicitly answering the question - not going off on a tangent nor trying to change the question to suit an answer that you want to write. One way of avoiding this is by starting each paragraph with a topic sentence, summarising what that paragraph is going to be about and how it answers the question. Another method is simply by rewording the question into your answer at the start and end of every paragraph. At least. For greater impact, include synonyms of the word, which can also help with the readability of your answer.
4. Avoid PEE/PEEL/etc. where you can
Thousands of students are taught the same, basic Point-Evidence-Explain (or variant) analytical paragraph structure. If you want to stand out, show academic strength, and achieve the highest marks then you must break free from the chains of PEE! (This also applies for your introduction format. âIn this essay, I will argueâŠâ gets pretty dull after reading it 100 times)
For my students, I will be teaching them to write What-How-Why paragraphs:
WHAT has the writer done?
HOW have they done it?
WHY have they done it/is it effective?
This way, your focus is always on why the writer has chosen to use that specific language/structure/form, but it allows you to be creative in crafting your response. Being able to discuss the âwhyâ of literature is the key to unlocking the highest grades. Reading through examinersâ reports this summer has made one thing clear - it is not enough to merely spot linguistic devices or structural features. You must explain why the writer has chosen them and why that is an effective choice (or not).
5. Avoid sweeping statements about context
The main advice here is to only include comments about the context of the text if it adds to the analytical point that you are making. They should not be a bolt-on sentence, but they should enhance your answer.
Further, sweeping claims like âAll Jacobean women were oppressed by societyâ is far too vague. On the other hand, a comment like âLady Macbeth is a disturbing example of womanhood because she denies her gender at a time where the role of a woman was clear-cut, even patriarchal, in Jacobean societyâ suggests that you have a greater understanding of how context can influence the writerâs choices.
6. A plan is your best friend
Always, always make time to plan your answer. A method I recommend is, first, circling the key words in the question (character/theme, what you are asked to do, where in the text you are asked to look, etc.). Secondly, write all of your ideas down onto the page, highlighting parts from the extract if you have that in front of you. Finally, select a judicious number of points that you are going to talk about (quality not quantity here) and number the order in which you are going to make them.
If you are writing a comparative essay, each paragraph must start and end with a comparative point about whatever it is you are comparing (characters/themes/etc.) I suggest the following format:
âX is presented in both text A and text B. However, in A the author uses devices 1 and 2 to demonstrate X. On the other hand, in B, the author demonstrates X via use of devices 3 and 4.â Then write one paragraph for each text. Repeat this again for another similarity. And again for a third - if you think that is appropriate.

Julkalendern
December is approaching and that means julkalendern is about to start! Itâs a beloved tradition among Swedes of all ages and really helps kickstart the Christmas spirit in this cold country.Â
What is julkalendern?
Julkalendern (the Christmas calendar) is a Swedish TV series televised each year on SVT 1 (Swedish state owned TV) with one episode per day from the 1st to the 24th of December (since Christmas Eve is the big celebration day in Sweden). Each episode is about 15 minutes long and is showed on TV in the morning (7.15 during the week and 8.45 on the weekend) and in the evening (18.45). Each year there is a completely new series but itâs often about kids having to save Christmas. As a child I remember it was such an important tradition to watch it in the morning before school and it really created this nice and cozy Christmas feeling. There is also a radio version with another story but I personally never listened to that and I think itâs generally less popular. Thereâs also a paper calendar that you open after the program every day.Â
My personal experience with julkalendern
The first julkalender I personally can remember watching is HĂ„kan BrĂ„kan in 2003 (I was 5 then) and I remember I also had the computer game. A lot of my friends my age remember the one from 2002 DieselrĂ„ttor och sjömansmöss but I only remember one episode very vaguely. I think I watched every episode of the julkalender every year until 2012 Mysteriet pĂ„ Greveholm - Grevens Ă„terkomst (when I was 14 because after that youâre not really in the target audience anymore). I also watched it last year 2018 Storm pĂ„ Lugna gatan because I was living in Italy and it was one of the few things that really gave me the Swedish Christmas feelings while being abroad.Â
Where can I watch julkalendern?
If youâre in Sweden you can watch some julkalendrar on öppet arkiv. You can watch this yearâs julkalender from anywhere in the world (I think, since it hasnât started yet I donât know for sure but Swedes abroad probably would be very upset if they couldnât so thereâs a big chance you can)!Â
History of julkalendern
1960 - Titteliture - the first installment of julkalendern. It started the first of advent (which was the 27/11 that year) but since there was no TV on Wednesdays it still had 24 episodes.Â
1967 - Gumman som blev liten som en tesked - an iconic one, has been voted among the best ones ever, got a reprise in 1976
1969 - Herkules Jonssons storverk - the first julkalender in colorÂ
1971 - Broster Broster - the name changed from adventskalendern to the current julkalendern
1973 - Mumindalen - it aired on SVT 2, a channel not everyone had a the time and the TV version wasnât the same as the radio version. Also Moomin so we love thatÂ
1977 - Fem myror Ă€r fler Ă€n fyra elefanter - taken from the original series (which is an I C O N I C show) aired in 73 and 74. Taught the alphabet and therefor had 28 episodes (since the Swedish alphabet has 28 letters). It didnât go in alphabetical order though.Â
1988 - Liv i luckan med julkalendern - the first time julkalendern was sent live (the second time was in 92) since there were competitions the kids could call in and win stuff from.
1991 - Sunes jul - based on the Sune books (also iconic for my generation), the same family is also used in the 2002 julkalender HÄkan BrÄkan but this time from the perspective of the younger brother HÄkan.
1996 - Mysteriet pĂ„ Greveholm - the first one to have its own website and game. The 2012 julkalender was a sequel of this one. One of the most popular and iconic julkalender ever.Â
2014 - Piratskattens hemlighet - very controversial since it was set on a sunny island and there wasnât a drop of snow and everyone was upset about that because it didnât feel like a true julkalender.
2015 - Tusen Ă„r till julafton - based on the series HistorieĂ€tarna (which is great), there is a legal twist about the rights of the program and therefor it doesnât have a DVD version.Â

There are eight holidays or Sabbats that are traditionally recognized. These sabbats represents birth, death, and rebirth, and are usually associated with The Lord/God but nothing is preventing you from honoring The Lady/Goddess or your own deities as well!
When it comes to celebrating these holidays, there is no set defined way to do it. Do whatever feels natural and fits into your practice best. Hereâs some more traditional information though to get you going in a good direction. And when it comes to the decor, decorate however you see fit and donât feel obligated to use real plants because faux flowers are just a good.
Yule About: Yule lands on the days of 20-21 December, and is traditionally celebrated with fire and family. In some traditions this is the time when the death aspect of The Lord/God is overtaken by by the rebirth aspect (sometimes referred to as the Divine Child.) This is the holiday where many of our christmas traditions come from and are based on, so this is a relatively easy holiday to celebrate! Colors: Red and Green Incense: Frankincense, Myrrh Decor options: Holly, Mistletoe, Ivy, Pine/Pinecones Herbs: Bayberry, Chamomile, Rosemary, Sage Traditions: Yule Log, this is a log to be decorated and burned at the end of the holiday. Instead of cutting down a tree, find an old log thatâs been laying in the woods and take it home with you! It doesnât have to be very big. When the holiday is over, you can dispose of this log however you feel fit, but make sure to keep a piece of the log for the new year as a good luck and protection charm! Yule Tree, essentially just a christmas tree! Traditionally this tree is real, but a faux tree works just as well.
Imbolc/Candlemas About: This is actually a holiday that most seem to ignore or forget about, but itâs just as important as the rest! Celebrated on the days of 1-2 February, this is typically a holiday to celebrate The Lady/Goddess in all her forms, Maiden, Matron, and Crone. This is the holiday to banish the winter season and welcome in spring. Imbolc is a good time to delve into fertility magick if thatâs something youâre interesting in. Colors: White, Light Blue, Lavender, Silver Incense: Lavender, Vanilla, and any floral scents. Decor options: Flowers, and Angelica Herbs: Basil, Bay Traditions: Burning Lavender or White candles, and the best way to celebrate this holiday is spring cleaning! Clean the house, rearrange things, make a new altar set up, and take a nice warm bath to cleanse yourself. This is the time for you to be reborn into something new.
Ostara About: Falling on the days of 20-21 March, this is a holiday that represents the warrior aspect of The Lord/God, and itâs also the Spring Equinox. This is a holiday of balance, and fertility. Colors: Any Pastels Incense: Jasmine, Rose Decor Options: Wild Flowers, Acorns, Daffodils, Honeysuckle, Lily Herbs: Jasmine, Rose, Tansy, Violet Traditions: This is the best time to buy (or even make) yourself a new broom, or go out into nature to find a staff. Now is also a really good time to start a garden if that interests you.
Beltane About: This holiday falls on 5 May and is the last of the spring and fertility festivals. This is when The Lord/God and The Lady/Goddess join together to become whole, making this a good time for any workings in love or family. Colors: Dark Green, Light Blue, Lavender, Pink, Yellow, and White Incense: Frankincense Decor Options: Angelica, Bluebells, Daisies, Ivy, Rose Herbs: Almond, Angelica, Rose Traditions: The Maypole, a tall pole decorated with flowers or ribbons that is danced around during the festival. This is a little less likely for people to do (though i have a friend who does), so an easier way to celebrate this holiday is to make your space green, flowery and inviting!
Midsummer Night/Litha About:This is the summer solstice, and is usually celebrated on the days 20-21 of June. This holiday is a very powerful one and represents The Lord/God in his entirety. During this holiday, people celebrate success, drive, and passion. Colors: Dark Blue, Red, Orange, Yellow, Gold Incense: Lavender, Sandalwood Decor Options: Fruits, Pines, Roses (feel free to use a bowl of fake fruit!) Herbs: Chamomile, Lavender, Fennel, Thyme, Hemp Traditions: This is the best time to do magick dealing with business or financial affairs. But being that this is the summer solstice, honestly any spell will be exceptionally powerful so save your big ritual of the year for this day! Lammas/ Lughnassadh About: The first of the harvest holidays, this is usually when the prep for winter begins and the fall seasons really takes off. Colors: Yellow, Cream, Brown Incense: Frankincense, Sandalwood Decor: Grain, Corn, and Fallen Leaves Herbs: Heather, Wheat Traditions: If you have a garden, this is a good day to check and harvest what foods are ready. Itâs also tradition to start stocking you magickal pantry for the cold months to come. Stock up while resources are a plenty. And one last tradition is the baking of bread, a good time to have some fun in the kitchen and get crafty.
Mabon About: This is the Autumn Equinox and the time when harvesting really gets going. This holiday is on the days 20-21 of September, meaning if you live in a more rural area youâll start seeing the farmers out and about and the leaves have really started changing and falling. The year is close to its end! Colors: Red, Orange, Brown Incense: Myrrh, Pine, Sage Decor Options: Fallen Leaves, Vines, Acorns, Corn Herbs: Marigold, Sage, Rose Traditions: Collect, press, and save fallen leaves to use in protection spells!
Samhain About: Ahh, the witches favorite holiday and the holiday that signals a new solar year! This holiday falls on the same day as Halloween, 31 October. This is a time to celebrate, honor, and communicate with passed loved ones. This is another very powerful day in the craft, so save any big spells or rituals for this day! Colors: Orange, Green, Black, Purple Incense: Patchouli, Myrrh Decor Options: Pumpkings/Jack-O-Lanterns, Corn, Gourds, Leaves Herbs: Heather, Sage Traditions: Alot of the tradtions we have with Halloween actually have their origins based in the craft so feel free to celebrate normally! If youâre looking to communicate with the dead, this would be the night to do it (but be careful, spirits have heightened strength and negative entities/energies like to take advantage of those who are inexperienced.) And of course, if you have a big ritual or spell that you want to cast, this is a really good day to do so.

Cord Cutting Rituals
Background Info:
Cord cutting rituals are conducted typically at the end of a relationship, whether that be platonic or romantic in nature. The whole concept of cord cutting rituals stems from the idea that one needs to cut their etheric ties to someone or something. Doreen Virtue, a former spiritualist who has now since converted, says that etheric cords âact like hoses, with energy directed back and forth between both people.â
Etheric cords have the potential to transmit energy and communication between two people, but sometimes this cord becomes unhealthy. In my own personal experience, cords that are unhealthy often result in an obsession with that person, a fear that youâre being manipulated, and in some cases the knowledge that youâre being gaslit even if the relationship itself has ended.
The purpose of cord cutting rituals is cutting those unhealthy energetic ties to someone or something (like an addiction!). A cord cutting ritual will allow you to move on to better things and leave that unhealthy tie in your past.
Cord Cutting Ritual
Supplies: -Incense (optional) -Candle -A picture of yourself and the thing you are cutting cords to (if you donât have a photo, the names written on a piece of paper works well) -Scissors -A cord (can be yarn, thread, rope, etc.)
The way I conduct cord cutting rituals are a bit different than most sources Iâve seen. One of the dangers of a cord cutting ritual I want to urge you to be aware of is that if you do not remove the cord from you, that cord can reappear. While cord cutting can entirely be symbolic (i.e. making the motion of cutting a cord as opposed to cutting a literal cord), I prefer the method of doing it literally as well.
Since this is a ritual, I encourage you to cast a circle so there is no unwanted energy that seeps in or out. If you prefer not to cast a circle, however, that is absolutely fine. Just make sure that your space is protected so the energy raised doesnât spill out or any unwanted energy seeps in.
If youâd like to pray to your ancestors, speak with any of your guides or deities or entities you work with, do so now. I like to ask them to enter my space and be with me as I do my work.
Dress your candle if you so choose. Your candle will represent the healing energy for after your cord cutting. You can use herbs or oils (be sure to use carrier oils if youâre using essential oil blends!) or carve sigils/runes/symbols into the candle! Do it however you like.
Light your candle and as it burns, feel the healing energy of the candle wash over you.
Take your pictures or your names written on a piece of paper and then your âcordâ and attach the cord between the photo or the pieces of paper.
Take your scissors or knife or whatever youâll be cutting the cord with. As you cut the cord, visualize the tie between you and the object being cut, severing those ties. Once youâre ready, untie the cords attached to your end and visualize those cords being dug out of your energetic self so that nothing remains.
Visualize yourself and the other person as healed and whole. Let the candle burn either all at once or over several days, whichever you need to feel that healing energy. Once your ritual has ended, dispose of the cords in two separate places. You can burn them or bury them, whichever you feel is right.
