Ares’ armor changes depending on what he’s doing is a detail that is so small yet also so cool.
He has two armor variants, one is sleeker and one is bulkier. The only true difference in the variants is the design of the shoulder pauldrons (shoulder plates)
For sake of explanation I’ll call them speed and battle.
We see the battle version when he’s doing just that, engaging in an event that requires him to appear bigger and stronger. The pauldrons have guardbraces, though not large they would be an advantage to defending against disks and staffs since it’s another barrier blocking his neck.
(Realistically speaking guardbraces are MUCH larger but this is a work of fiction so it doesn’t really matter)
He’s introduced to the committee with his battle variant because that’s what he’s showcased for: being a solider. He’s also seen in the armor while infiltrating Encom’s grid and the final fight scene.
The speed variant is also true to its name, its slimmer, built for aerodynamics, hence why he’s wearing during the lifecycle scene. He’s in this variant much more as he’s wearing it when he’s in the grid majority of the time.
The most interesting part about his armor is when it switches in a single frame and we only see it happen once. The change happens when he’s pulled into Flynn’s original grid.
In that scene we see him charge at Athena, jumping and instead of breaking through glass he’s breaking through a wall in the 80s grid. The moment he’s in the grid his armor has changed from speed to battle. This change could be:
A: his current directive was to attack and defend, having a mindset that if he returned to the Dillinger server, he’d have to fight his way out.
B: it became equipped due to entering an unfamiliar server and is a defense mechanism.
Either way his armor seems to be tied to his current objective. We don’t see any other program from Dillinger’s grid have that kind of ability, they have to changed by Julian himself. And yet Ares having the ability to do that only shows how much more advanced he is compared to his fellow programs.
