crazy local story in the news today about a woman being taken to court for feeding the birds in her backyard. "thats crazy" you might be saying. but it turns out by "birds" they mean "turkey vultures" (awesome lol) and "feeding" they mean "leaving out entire uncooked turkeys in her backyard, attracting a metric fuck ton of rats" (not awesome)

I’m not Christian, I don’t go to church anymore, and my pastor died, but when he was alive I’d sometimes go to his sermons and I remember one time he said “it feels good to hate, but we know that it isn’t allowed, so when we’re told that we’re allowed to hate someone we get so excited that we forget we’re supposed to love”, and if my humble atheist ass might borrow some church talk I’d like to perhaps submit that
Anyhow sometimes on the day to day I feel disgust or revulsion and I have to ask myself “is this a danger to anyone at all or am I just looking for something I’m allowed to hate” and a solid 98/100 times it’s the latter so once again thank you pastor D
i think we need to take the adjective “adult” away from porn and from twee lifehack tiktokers bc there are some emotional experiences that simply do not happen to you in your teens and i have no other way to describe them
example: my grandpa passed away last year, and my mom is still in the long process of dealing with his stuff. i was helping her dig through some boxes and found this thick leather bound notebook. she said yeah, that’s his address book. i don’t know how to throw it away. i said okay, i’m taking it. it’s mine now, not your problem. and it was obviously a relief for her, letting me take this book full of decades and decades of her dad’s handwriting and allow herself to passively believe that it isn’t gone, even if she intellectually understands otherwise. but i couldn’t throw it away either. and it ended up in yet another box that moved with me to my new apartment and got shuffled around from pile to pile until i finally thought, no, this wasn’t the deal. i owe it to my mother to feel this sadness, to perform this tiny sliver of mourning for her so that she doesn’t have to, and by hoarding this useless object i’m not holding up my side of the bargain. so i threw it away, and i felt sad, but a lighter kind of sadness. now that’s adult
cats being capable of understanding accidents and even giving you a little head bonk to let you know you're still cool makes it infinitely funnier that they don't understand when you're trying to help them
cats when you step on their tail: i'll admit that was rather ouchie, but given the lifetime of goodwill and trust between us, one must conclude this booboo is but a fluke.
cats when you try to get their claws unstuck from the couch covering: this nefarious bitch has never had a single honorable intention in their dishonest and shameful life, this must be one of their sinister plots or perhaps even an attempt on my life,
why do people think victorian orphans were like. the peak of sheltered pure innocence
"imagine feeding mountain dew to a victorian orphan" they'd probably appreciate the pick-me-up before their shift as junior osha violator at the accident factory
"imagine showing a victorian orphan vtubers" they'd say "this is boring i wanna watch public executions"

One thing that comes up over and over again in Our Republic of Suffering, a history of how the Civil War influenced American ideas about death, and that has now become a noticeable anachronism in so many fantasy or historical novels, is that people in the 19th century did not find the idea of a "quick death" in any way comforting, and found it uniquely upsetting. It was really important that someone live long enough to make some kind of religious assertion that could assure their family that they were in heaven, to the point where it became somewhat common for people to tell a dead soldier's family that he had had some kind of prophetic dream or sense of forboding that inspired him to say something like "if I don't make it tomorrow, tell my mother that I have accepted Jesus as my savior." shortly before being blown to bits. People were less afraid of pain than they were of the more unfamiliar horror of dying without any chance to say goodbye.
Anyway, now that I'm aware of it, it's amazing how often a fantasy novel or a straight up 19th century novel will have a character thinking, "at least it was quick" about someone who died in an explosion or shipwreck or whatever...and they would not think that!
making les mis an even more perfect adaptation of the original work as every character takes a million years to monologue their death to you.

this one is pretty good actually. basically i feel like this
the problem with learning shorthand is that it basically makes any set of long squiggles look like words so you will be trying to read the floaters in your eyes while you’re in the shower. on the bright side i may have invented a new form of divination.
