The Sun article that just came out is so disgusting. since fandom has latched onto another topic of perceived attack and exclusion, it feels like something's gotten wayyy off track here.
the way people talk about Louis has gone from disappointment to casual cruelty. and i think it’s time we ask: what exactly are people doing? and why does it feel okay for them.
psychologist albert bandura had a phrase for this: moral disengagement. its 8 ways how people convince themselves their harmful behavior is fine, even justified. in fandoms, the abuse often begins when a fan perceives a celebrity's action (or inaction) as a personal affront. fandom, when it loses the plot, hits all the checkpoints:
moral justification – “he's betraying us” “he's erasing my identity” “he's hurting the fandom”
euphemistic labeling – abuse gets called “accountability” “critique” “venting"
advantageous comparison – “it’s not like we’re sending death threats” “other celebs get worse”
displacement of responsibility – “this is just how stan culture works”
diffusion of responsibility – “i’m just one person” “everyone’s doing it” “i only reshared it.” "all opinions are valid"
distortion of consequences – “he’ll be fine” “he's famous” "he's rich" "he's asking for it" "i'm just joking" and the fan favorite “it’s not that deep”
dehumanization – "he's not who i though he was" "a puppet" "a liar" "he's selfish"
attribution of blame – “he brought this on himself with that tweet, quote, that like, that professional association” “he should’ve known better”
these mechanisms allow fans to bypass empathy. your "disappointment" morphs into perceived moral righteousness, which then licenses punitive behavior: harassment, guilt-tripping, and more.
the worst part? it doesn’t feel like abuse when you’re inside it. it feels like justice. solidarity. community. catharsis. but look again: what you’re building isn’t connection. it’s a machine that turns disappointment into cruelty, and convinces you that you’re the good guys for doing it.
i’m not here to fight. im just asking: when you look in the mirror, when you check your likes, posts, dms... do you recognize who you are in all this?

Or the accusations flung at his team.) - dehumanization (making him a caricature of traits you decided to enforce. calling him liar everytime his biceps show a little definition FIVE years after he said he doesnt workout and a major accident that must have needed physio. because he is not a real person who is allowed to make a change, or evolve. he is stuck in a headcanon YOU fixated in your mind. yeah go on tell me, its not that deep, then go back up and read what that is.)
that’s not “drama.” that’s emotional abuse.
fandom crosses this line when the anger stops being about actions and starts being about the person’s right to exist unpunished. when you find a fault in every action. when you try to break someone under the guise of holding them accountable? that’s the shift.
if the way you show love turns into hate the moment someone disappoints you, maybe it was never love to begin with. and when those perceived disappointments are proven to be not real and you still can't let go of your resentment and instead shift it onto another action, maybe you're on a witchhunt. and it might be worth introspection. what has he ever done to deserve this much targeted hate?

Hi! I sent the anon about X Factor contracts and that Harry possibly planned on CO as bisexual with Medicine. Thanks for replying. I just wanted to clarify that I don't think Harry is bisexual. At the time there were syndicated articles about it and I thought it was going to be a 'stepping stone'. So he could be out as queer but still have PR relationships with women. But the articles were buried a short time after so I'm not sure what happened. They were syndicated which usually means it is his team's doing. I do think the reason why he hasn't CO as bisexual is because it's not true to himself. He would still have to fake attraction to women, still do PR relationships with women and still write songs about women. So he wouldn't be in much of a better place. God I hope Harry doesn't have to get fake engaged, even if it's to release a gay album. That would be a train wreck. Where would it go from there? Getting married to a woman? Having kids with a woman? In that case I'd prefer that he waits until he can CO. Because that would ruin him. He already gets backlash for playing all sides and it's going to keep increasing. People are going to tire from him. Even fans are tiring from the back and forth. More celebrities will call him out. Imagine him being engaged to a woman and still expressing himself as a gay man. I don't think he'd do a stepping stone approach by coming out as bi first. It wouldn't change much, he'd still not be truthful about his sexuality, still be linked to women and still have his womaniser image. I get that it would have made sense if Harry was single and wanted to date men, but he's not. Harry being linked to men, when he's with Louis would be hard on Louis. So what would coming out as bi accomplish? Getting to be a bit more gay on stage maybe, and openly writing songs about men, but all in all would it be worth it? I think not.
And i agree with your second part. I think the fandom and our society are ready for an out gay male artist at his level. I hope Sony is soon there too. More and more gay artist make it big, and don't lose fans when they come out. Look at Lil Nas X (he's on Columbia with H btw). Even gay country music is going viral. K-pop stars are coming out. Heartstopper and RWRB are successes and not just made for the gays anymore. People are loving it, even the gp. Being out makes you stand out from the crowd, and you have a whole community at the ready to support you, and the gp is following. I hope they have a bit faith in his fans and the gp. But i fear the labels are traditionalists, formulaic, and take a conservative approach. They might be slow to follow and fail to see this opportunity for what it is.

I think that one reason fans, particularly on tumblr, are so protective over Harry and Louis' closets is because they don't want to get their hopes up and be disappointed if they don't CO so they prefer to be negative. I've definitely been there but it makes me feel miserable. I prefer to be cautiously optimistic. I think another reason is fear that their relationship doesn't live up to fan's expectations. Fans have mapped out a perfect faultless relationship. That they're strictly monogamous, they're it for life, they've only slept with each other, they've only had eyes for each other, they're jealous and possessive, they're always pining, they've never broken up, if they have broken up it was to focus on their career etc. It's going to really hurt if that reality doesn't match up so I think some would prefer them to stay closeted. Which yeah, I don't blame people for feeling that way. It's part of being human. Disappointment hurts. I try to view them as individuals first and their relationship second. They've both made it really clear they're part of the gay community. Whether they're still together or not, who knows. But we can hope. I digress lol. There are so many positives to CO and it frustrates me when fans only talk about the negatives. The influential blogs will list excuse after excuse why they shouldn't CO. Or scold fans hoping for a CO, saying they don't owe us anything. But what if they do want to CO? Fans seem to leave that out of the equation completely. They always bring up the 'privacy' excuse. Talking about how fiercely private they are. They don't know that. They may be private now because they're in the closet. It might not be such a big problem if they were to CO.
I agree about fans guarding their own hearts as to not be disappointed. It's a defense mechanism and i get it. I just don't get killing the hope of others who're cautiously optimistic, or people who are hopeful but biding their time. Some people have become so jaded that they are not celebrating the small wins we get, and are scolding others for being disappointed when H and L, for example, have to stunt. It's a miserable way of being a fan, but it's a way of coping for some. Misery breeds misery, so bloggers leave. It does not make a good fandom environment.
