2021 has been all over the place so far but I am Ready to smash my final year as an undergrad
drop me some asks if you have any questions about studying linguistics!
It's happening!! I'm so happy to announce that I will start a BA Linguistics degree this September 😄😄😄
I've been working towards this for a long time and while the road to uni has definitely not been a straightforward one (I might make a post about this another day) I am so ready to get started ~
I'll be using the tag #indecisive goes to uni for all of my degree related posts
2019 -> 2021
From accepting my undergrad place to starting my dissertation! I can't believe I'm in my final year ☺️
Studying aesthetic expectation: taking beautiful handwritten notes in the library, maybe with some green tea or a healthy smoothie ✨
My studying reality: slamming monster energy while I type obnoxiously on a red gamer laptop. rob zombie at max volume in my headphones. straight VIBING
Kinda crazy that at least half of langblr is learning their languages through their second and third languages instead of their native ones. The skills and talent you have to have to be able to self-study a foreign language in yet another foreign language is remarkable (especially if you need to learn specialized C1/C2 level shit) and I am honestly very jealous. I know it’s “normal” to a lot of you, but as someone who has never ever had to detour by using another language outside of my home one, I still think that’s very sexy of you guys that you can just do that.
An Overview of Note-Taking Styles
Note-taking is one of the most essential skills a student should master. It allows you to record and review information to be used in the future. But what’s the best way to do so? Here’s an overview of note-taking styles that can help you maximize your learning!

Comprehensible Input: German
With all this talk about comprehensible input, I thought I’d make some suggestions for German learners, using mostly things that can be accessed for free on YouTube, or that are on Netflix. It would be cool for other people to add their suggestions, or make these sorts of posts for other languages!
The ideal input is both comprehensible and compelling. According to linguist Stephen Krashen, the ideal amount of comprehensibility is 60-70%. If you find yourself understanding less than 60-70%, try the lower category (unless you are the lowest category). If you find yourself understanding more than 60-70%, try the higher category.
A0 - A1:
It’s pretty hard to find comprehensible input for A0-A1 level. Don’t expect yourself to understand 60% of what is said - at this level you don’t really have a choice. A lot of the suggestions in this section will also benefit some A2 learners.
Nico’s Weg - A1 (movie, YouTube)
Hallo Deutschschule (simple German dialogues, YouTube)
Feuerwehrmann Sam (series, YouTube)
Mascha und der Bär (series, YouTube)
Peppa Wutz (series, YouTube)
A2:
Nico’s Weg - A2 (movie, YouTube)
Disney movies
If you are a low A2, try out some of the suggestions in the A0-A1 section.
If you are a high A2, try out some of the suggestions in the B1 section.
B1:
Nico’s Weg - B1 (movie, YouTube)
Totally Spies - The Movie (movie, Youtube)
Totally Spies (series, YouTube)
Winx Club (series, YouTube)
Isi & Ossi (movie, Netflix)
Spongebob Squarepants (series, YouTube or Netflix)
The Simpsons (series, YouTube)
Dragons - Race to the Edge (series, Netflix)
My Little Pony (series, Netflix)
Pokemon (series, Netflix)
B2+:
Dark (series, Netflix)
Wir sind jung, wir sind stark (movie, Netflix)
Babylon Berlin (series, Netflix)
Oktoberfest: Beer and Blood (series, Netflix)
Barbarians (series, Netflix)
Downfall (movie, Netfix)
I mean basically anything aimed at adults lol, but just thought I’d put some suggestions out there.
online university is just *hasn’t been outside in three days* *absolute lack of spatial and temporal awareness* *tiktok break* *opens an email and forgets to respond* *pyjamas all day every day* *paces around room* *hopes your prof just thinks you’re in a different timezone when you submit an assignment at 4am* *unlimited tea* *bathroom breaks every hour* *no clear divide between free time and school* *looks out window longingly*
Ok listen I SHOULD be revising German for the course that's actually part of my degree
.... or I can take the free Arabic/Urdu/Polish taster courses....
Linguistics Gothic
An asterisk precedes every sentence. They are all incorrect. You can’t say why. You can’t say anything at all. My, the stars are bright tonight.
There is a “sold” sign in your syntax tree, You didn’t know there was a “for sale” sign to begin with. The V moved to the T. Your language does not have grammatical tense. Where did it go?
Semantics has become semantic. There is only one meaning.
The puns have metastasized and spread. Phonology is refusing to come to its sister’s aid. Apart from the Apple-Android debate, phonetics is infested with bloodsucking insects. In semantics they suck something equally as horrible. The Czech capital is being fumigated. Morphology’s true form is too terrible to behold. Outside the core subfields, psycholinguistics is looking unstable.
The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is true. You cannot perceive things for which your language lacks a word. Something is devouring your legs. You cannot see it.
