#I feel like with turner it’s not just what marks he was making (ie it’s not JUST saying his technique was strikingly modern)#it’s what he was seeing#he was fundamentally *seeing* specific things when looking at a landscape that other artists weren’t seeing in that way#which you see - like all artists - clearest in sketches#bc it’s what he considered the essentials#meaning what he considered essential to represent what he was seeing#which is to say: probably not a specific tree#probably not a cliff or a boat or a mountain#(even though he IS representing trees and cliffs and boats and mountains at the end of the day)#what he is seeing these massive blocks of air#and light to a certain extent but not light like the impressionists would do later#it’s the air- he can SEE IT#he’s drawing the void#as positive presence#anyway I found out last year he owned a side gig pub in wapping#what a lad (x)

so many misguided metaphors around violence and desire. if the open maw of a panting beast fills you with the want to be devoured, that does not make you prey. while the rabbit trembles in fear, its deepest desire is to run. evolution demands it. in fact, the desire to be eaten does not make you any small animal at all.
