Raven: Okay, here’s my pitch. We have been trying to put stuff in the box according to shape, right? But, see, it’s difficult and sometimes you get confused if the shapes are similar. There’s got to be a better way, right mammal? And there is!! I was checking out the box and it turns out that the lid comes off! So not only you can just drop in whatever, independent of its shape, but you can you use the box to full capacity!! Eh? Eh?? Cool right?
Human: … please just drop the star in the star-shaped hole
[Video description
Video: A crow is trying to put a small 3d plastic shape into a box. It’s a child’s shape awareness toy thingy. The lid of the box has six shaped holes, a triangle, a square, a circle, a cross and a 5 pointed star in the centre. The crow has the star shape in her beak and is attempting to place it in the corresponding hole.
Text and voice: working on her hardest shape.
Video: the crow keeps trying to force the star into the cross hole but it won’t fit. She gets frustrated and walks away.
Voice: Try again.
Video: the box now has two strips of blue tape covering the incorrect holes. The only remaining one is the correct one. The crow does not appear to appreciate this and immediately pokes a hole through the tape and pulls the entire lid off with her beak.
Voice: no! Not that hole!
Video: the crow drops the lid on the ground.
Voice: Noooo! Girlfriend!
Video: the crow then walks round the back of the box, throws the lid aside and picks up the star shape that was on the ground under the lid and drops the star in the box.
Text and Voice: technically what I asked her to do.
Voice: Yes, yes, yes. Try again.
Video: the lid is on the box again and there are several holes in the tape. The crow places the star shape on top of the star hole then pokes it through. Video cuts to a later but where there’s no tape over any of the holes. The crow is trying to put the star in the circular hole then the square hole. She then puts it in the star hole and gets some treats from a human hand.
Voice: yes, success, yes, good, yes. Nice job.

tag description: whenever it comes to animal intelligence i have to remember the quote “if rabbits defined intelligence like humans the most intelligent animal would be a rabbit followed by whatever is most likely to do what rabbits want” what the crow did WAS more intelligent than finding the right hole. it realized there was an objectively better solution it’s not its fault that it doesn’t know the secret rules of the universe
literally every sleep advice pamphlet and website: don’t do things before bedtime! no reading! no video games! don’t watch tv! nothing stimulating at all within two hours of going to bed! :)

imagine if firefighters didnt go into a burning building full of children because they were scared of being burned. police are fucking worthless
“Defund the police” is now just practical economics. Why pay for something that doesn’t even work???

Using you summing up my thoughts perfectly as an excuse to say:
Tolkien’s choice here was absolutely commentary on the way the false glory of war was sold to his generation before they were shipped off to die in WWI.
Given that much of Lord of the Rings was written for his son who was serving in WW2 at the time, I'd say it was as much a reflection of children sold stories of courage and bravery in one war now expected to under go another.

My perfect mashed potatoes
The secret is in the water; literally, it’s IN the water.
See, when you boil potatoes, a lot of special starches and sugars and stuff leeches out into the water. When you drain the water before mashing them, you throw away a lot of good stuff, which is a big part of what makes mashed potatoes “dry” and bland, even when you add large amounts of cream and butter and things.
So don’t throw out any water.
Here’s how you do that:
First, cut your potatoes into smaller cubes than you probably do. (I’ve left the skins on for flavor and also, that’s where a lot of a potato’s nutrients are, like protien and iron and vitamins B and C, just to name a few)
The reason for cutting them smaller (besides avoiding giant peices of skin) is so that there is less space in the pot between each peice for water to fill, so you use less water to cook them. That’s important because you won’t be draining any water, so you can’t afford to have too much water! For the same reason, just barely cover them with water when they go on the stove.
But! Before you do that, put the pot on the stove with some butter, garlic, and seasonings; let the butter start to sizxle just a little then put most of a single layer of potatoes in the pan and let the brown and sear. Turn them, brown them on all sides, get ‘em fairly dark (I forgot to get a pic here because I was worried I’d burn the butter).
Ready? now throw the rest of the potatoes in right on top, and add your water, give them a stir. This way, you’re boiling in some of that lovely fried potato/french fry flavor.
Okay, so, as they cook, you may need to add a little water, not too much! ideally the very highest piece of potato will be poking just above the surface. Now, when your potatoes are really really soft, mash them directly into the water. Just pull them off the stove, leave all the water in, and start mashing. Trust me. At first you’ll think there’s too much water. If you get them mashed and they ARE a little too liquidy, just put ‘em back on the stove. You’ll have to stir often or constantly, but they will steam off additional water without losing any good stuff.
Now add some salt, and taste. Right?! And you haven’t even put in any cream or cheese or anything yet.
Speaking of which, you can use like, a third of the amount of butter or cream or anything, and they will still taste better than usual. So they taste better AND they are higher in nutrients AND lower in fats and salts! That’s a lot of win — enjoy your potatoes!

Remember when Terry played the Joker like a fiddle cause I sure do
Joker status: [ ] Told [ ] Told like a bitch [X] Batman: The Brave And The Told
Terry is literally what bruce would’ve been if his parents didn’t die. Well either that or terry got his sense of humor from his mom.
I love Batman Beyond because it’s basically Spider-Man as Batman with a healthy dosage of cyberpunk.
The best part is this isn’t just Terry fucking with Joker, Terry realized after bats told him “Joker likes to talk” that he likes to talk too. So he decided to answer joker back with something Joker was never expecting. Joker could easily deal with the typical hero “you won’t get away with this” talk or someone being absolutely quiet. But mockery? taking the piss? Telling joker straight up “you ain’t shit?”
He can’t take a joke
