as much as I love badass characters pushing through pain to fight, I also love when they hit a point where they just can't. something structural is wrong or broken, so they can't stand. their muscles are simply too weak and overworked to hold them up. their bloody hands slip off the handles of their weapons, they can't aim through their vertigo or tunneling vision, they shake from blood loss or exhaustion even if not from fear. they've just reached their limit, and no amount of willpower will change that!

and it had me thinking: Dan Heng is an archivist. Even before the Express, his character stories emphasise how he would always record everything he experienced. And I think this is a neat way to give him hoarding tendencies but even more than that, it made me think about how innate to him it is to try and hold on to everything. And, as a consequence of that, how deeply it runs against his nature to try and discard his own past as he was once so determined to do.

It's obvious in retrospect that his mentality of outrunning the past only ever hurt him; it made him doubt himself, it made him distance himself from others. It only ever really enforced the belief that there was something inherently wrong with him. There's that line in 3.6- "For the first time in my life, I feel at ease"- no wonder. Recording both the past and the present is so important to Dan Heng. The fact that he was driven to the exact opposite just to be able to feel like no one would hurt him anymore- which barely even worked, since he still believed he'd hurt those close to him even while telling himself he wasn't anything like Dan Feng- is just so cruel.
