I don't want to add to the discourse about Emily Wilson, but the one part I can't let go about her critique is the claim that the movie needed to have the POV of the victims.

Uh...it kind of did?

I mean, we SAW the terror of that Trojan priestess (Zendaya) as the Greeks chased her down and killed her. Heck, we saw the fear and despair of all the Trojans when Agamemnon and the soldiers slaughtered them all. Just because it's seen from Odysseus' POV doesn't minimize the fact that THEY are the ones suffering.

The film literally opens with poor Sinon chilling out in front of the horse until he's brutally killed by the soldiers as he tries to explain that it was an offering for Athena. Later on, we find out that he had no idea that the whole thing was a setup, and that the Odysseus and the other Greeks inside the horse let him die. As if that wasn't bad enough, we get the revelation that Antinous duped him into taking his place in the army. Antinous promised that he'd look after Sinon's father, and instead he let the poor guy starve. So Sinon getting to chew Odysseus out in Hades is the character's one chance to vent his anger and betrayal, emphasizing just how meaningless his death was, at least for him and his father.

We even get the POV of Odysseus' men that softens their actions. Odysseus warned them not to eat the cattle, and they do initially listen. But it's easier to listen while they still have rations. But after days of no wind to sail and food running out, it becomes a choice between starving or drowning. They know they're screwed either way, so can we really blame them for caving? I wasn't expecting to feel sorry for them, since in the book, they're pretty stupid. I'm sure Nolan deliberately cut the wind incident because it would be harder to sympathize with them for screwing Odysseus over out of pure greed...

So while Emily Wilson is entitled not liking the movie, she's wrong that the film doesn't give the victims a voice. I heard it loud and clear. Maybe she just wasn't listening.

One fun dynamic in Nolan's Odyssey is the complete lack of reciprocity between Agamemnon/Menelaus and Odysseus/Telemachus.

Odysseus fears and resents Agamemnon the entire time. Whereas Agamemnon embraces him, lauds him for winning the war. Even after death he's like "gotta warn my bro Odysseus about homecomings."

Meanwhile Menelaus is going "I'm doing a great job at this advising him thing, I bet they'll call it Menelausing in the future" all while Telemachus is like "Mentor come pick me up the Spartans are scaring me."

Nolan is trying to say something really relevant for those with eyes to see. The way he frames the Trojan Horse as dishonorable is so important today, hes clearly saying there are rules of war that must always be followed. War is between soldiers and must be fought on equal ground with honor. The trojan horse was trickery and disgusting, to lure a people into a false belief of surrender and safety, to use an offering of peace as a weapon, to sneak into some ones homeland and start slaughtering them is breaking all the laws of decency, pillaging the city is not victory, desecrating the peoples religion is haunting. He’s saying with all his chest that the tales we hear of who is framed the hero are propaganda, he’s shouting for us to reanalyze those ballads, and hence all media coverage that crosses you today. All battles must be fought with honor between equals maintaining the sacredness of home, the sanctity of the life of an unarmed citizen and the holiness of a peoples religion. “To burn the walls of troy was to burn the world entire.”

Hmmm i wonder who we know is setting these laws ablaze in today’s world.

He’s even saying that Helen of Troy is just a scapegoat for all of agamemnons ambitions, all he wants is to win the trade routes, all he cares for is victory and wealth and everything else is just an excuse to jump into war for his own gains.

Its not even all that subtle.

And then he ends it with a line that hit me like a truck on my rewatch.

“And once again our mistakes will be forgotten”

bcs thats all mankind unfortunately does, forget the lessons learnt and let history repeat itself or worst of all rewrite the wolf as sheep.
