“Gale Hawthorne is a heartless murder!”

no, he’s actually a radicalized refugee who witnessed the genocide of his district AS A TEENAGER and then had to lead the survivors into the wilderness towards a pipe dream where he desperately and gratefully gave that power to someone he trusted.

Coin graciously allowed him to work alongside Beetee to make plans for her army. Beetee, a nearly sixty year old man, encouraged the team up and worked with a freshly traumatized 18 year old Gale to develop every single plan and weapon.

Coin’s entire scheme served only to further fester Gale’s growing (and justified) animosity towards the people who murdered almost everyone he ever knew.

…only for her to twist his ideas and use them against one of his own people, who he loved, so she could control his childhood best friend. she encouraged his violence for her gain.

Coin’s betrayal towards Gale almost exactly mirrors how Beetee’s ideas for the games where twisted to kill his own son.

Gale was captured and unconscious when the bombs dropped on Prim, Beetee was in the control room where it happened. (No one blames Beetee. i don’t either, the blame belongs to Coin, but it serves to mention.)

people saying Gale is just like Snow are completely losing the plot and MUST have shipping goggles on, because in no way is a victim of genocide comparable to their oppressor.

is Gale faultless? no. Gale had a problem with boundaries (to say the least) and needed intense therapy. instead, he got to watch bombs destroy his entire life.

Gale represents the “ugly” side of surviving that most people do not want to see but people need to start seeing it. there are hundreds of thousands of survivors and victims in real life and some of them are justifiably just as angry and vengeful as Gale.

if you don’t see Palestine in Gale then you are not reading the story as the political commentary it is.

as an aside i think it also bears mentioning that Beetee most likely sees Gale as a son. they share such similarities in mind and they worked so closely. i would love to see fresh talks about that instead of the same tired ship goggles treating gale as a useless part of the plot. the last thing Beetee did with Ampert was plan a bombing and there he was with Gale doing some more bombing plans. the man loves a good explosion fr.

I've been trying to think of a way to lay this out for a while bc it is the #1 most common concern that I see expressed by people who are uncertain about antipsychiatry, like, by far, and it requires a sort of perspective reframe that can be hard for me to put words to. I've had like three ppl express some of these concerns in the last couple days alone, some of them good friends (hi Alex!) and I wanted to just make a public post about it, bc I think it trips a lot of people up.

People will ask me: how can I be antipsychiatry when I rely on the psychiatric system to obtain care? How can I oppose something on which I rely to stay alive? Which I think is really understandable, given the somewhat misleading name of the movement (and there's several names for it already, none of which really are illuminating to people outside those circles, which I think is a big communication problem. But I digress.)

When I say I am advocating for the abolition of psychiatry, I'm not saying I want to abolish access to care. What I am saying is that I want to abolish the institution of psychiatry as the gatekeeper of that care. Currently that's the only way you can access the care you need, and that's a huge part of the problem! It's like... of course it would be incoherent to say "you can't be anticapitalist if you rely on corporations to survive," because of course the system is designed so that we must rely on it.

So what I am advocating for is the replacement of psychiatry as the sole avenue of care with other models, models which prioritize autonomy and remove hierarchy and coercive control. Peer respite in place of involuntary institutionalization, informed consent models of acquiring medications rather than forcing people to go through medical gatekeepers who hold enormous power over them and largely do not see them as real people, etc. There are many, many forms that proposed alternative ways to access care can take.

I get it! I also take meds. I also have to rely on the systems that hurt me. For me, being antipsych is about saying "it is fucked up that we are forced to rely on these harmful, hierarchical systems to access care. We deserve something humane. We deserve to be the ones in control of our own treatment. We deserve to have our autonomy valued and protected and prioritized." Psychiatry does not offer us these things, and its structure at the core ultimately prevents it from doing so, due to its hierarchical nature & inherent power imbalances. This is broadly applicable to many of our current systems, and saying so is not the same as making an argument that we should simply not have any systems at all.

just wanted to touch on what op mentioned about alternative models to psychiatry that “prioritize autonomy and remove hierarchy and coercive control”: i think a complementary and very crucial element is interdependence, and by extension, reciprocity.

psychiatry as a western institution is able to perpetuate itself partly by individualising people’s problems. non-western, especially indigenous wellbeing and ecological practices/theories are worth looking into. more relational ethics and models are also worth investigating. we need to cultivate relationships with other people and living things and the earth, the entire institution of psychiatry is what happens when people attempt to eradicate this need.

Is it only possible to present "Why are the curtains blue?" as a superficial question looking for a deep answer because blue is categorized as a mundane color in our culture?

So if I were writing a story and included that detail about your curtains, I would choose that to illustrate a frustrating / oppressive living situation for my protagonist (Someone who wants and needs to moments of shutting out influence from Society, in order to get some respite and peace, but their best attempt only leads that sanctuary to be bathed in the color of anger).

That sound about right?
