Now Announcing Spideytorch Week 2021!

Spideytorch Week, a weekly event centered around the relationship between Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) from the Marvel comics! The event will take place September 27th thru October 3rd!

This years themes are:

Day 1: Roommates - Canonically Peter and Johnny have been roommates (See Fantastic Four (2012) #17) . Maybe this time Peter and Johnny get a little bit closer living together. Day 1 of Spideytorch Week is all about Spideytorch falling in love and turning into that cliche vine “They were roommates”!

Day 2: Date Night/Date Gone Wrong - Being a superhero and missing dates is nothing new to Spider-Man or the Human Torch. This theme is all about Peter and Johnny finally getting a nice date night to themselves… or not…

Day 3: AU Day - A day where any Spideytorch AU of your choice can be posted! Pirates, No-Power AUs, Coffee shops, Villains, Fairy Tale Princes, whatever AU you like, you can create something for it today!

Day 4: Protectiveness/Comfort - Peter and Johnny are fiercely protective of those they love and care about, and each other are no exception. Today is anything about Peter and Johnny feeling protective, or even overprotective, of one another, or comforting one another when they need it.

Day 5: Teamwork - Spider-Man and the Human Torch are notorious for their legendary and shenanigan-filled team-ups! Are their team ups full of even more bickering and bantering once they’re dating? Do they somehow manage to annoy each other even more? This day is all about the legendary Spideytorch teamwork!

Day 6: Time/Universe - Today’s theme is all about Spideytorch Time hopping or traveling/being in the many different Marvel universes. Do Peter and Johnny go back in time and alter the course of their relationship? Or do you have the itch to see what Johnny Storm would be like in the Spider-Man Noir universe? Today is a day for anything of our Earth-616 Spideytorch traveling through time and universes, or simply Peter and Johnny existing in a separate Marvel universe!

Day 7: Free Day - Participant’s choice! Post whatever you’d like! If you missed a previous day’s deadline, you can use this one as well!

This year we are also bringing back general themes! These are themes that can be interpreted any way you like and can be combined with any other theme or used on their own. You can post general themes on any day!

I remember once, when I was in my early 20s, I was an afternoon supervisor at my job, and I worked with mostly teenagers, and the one day this one kid, who was like 15, was bored so I suggested he could clean out the fridge. He did and when he was done I said he did a good job.

After that, this kid was cleaning out the fridge at least once a week, and I was like, “why are you always cleaning the fridge?” Like, I didn’t mind, but it seemed odd. And he said, “one time I cleaned the fridge and you said I did a good job. I wanted to make you proud of me again.”

Literally, I changed the entire way I interacted with teenagers after that. I actually got a package of glitter stars and I would stick them on their nametags when they did a good job, and they loved it.

My manager had commented on how hard these kids work and I said, “they’re starved for positive feedback. They go to school all day then come to work all evening and no one appreciates it because it’s expected of them, but they’re still kids. They need positive feedback from adults in their lives.”

Like, everyone likes feeling appreciated. Everyone likes being complimented and having their efforts be noticed. Another coworker (who was a mother of teenage children), hated that I did this, and said they were too old to be rewarded with stickers, but like… it wasn’t about the stickers. The stickers were just a symbol that their effort was noticed and appreciated. I was just lucky that I learned this at a time when I was still young enough to remember what it was like to be a teenager. I was only 2 years out of highschool at that point and highschool is fucking hard. People forget this as they get older, but ask anyone and almost no one would ever want to go back and do it again, but they expect kids to suck it up because they’re young so they should be able to do school full time, plus homework, and work, and maintain a healthy social life, and sleep, and spend time with family, and do chores and help out at home, and worry about college and relationships and everything else, and then just get shit on all the time and treated like they’re lazy and entitled. And then they wonder why teenagers are apathetic.

hey yall. i just realized something.

this is probably gonna be long but whatever. stick with me.

soooo im currently rereading the original pjo series. and i am feeling. so many. things. i realized a lot of things too.

okayyy so in PJO, we view percy as reckless. stupid. always acting on impulse. basically that dumb guy that never thinks befire doing things. BUT in HOO, we start viewing him as mature and smart and strategic and all that. But he didnt grow THAT much. Percy didnt age that much in hoo.

Remember that iconic scene (Mark of Athena, i think?) where they meet some kind of monster/bad ppl (im too lazy to search it up) aboard the argo II and it was percy that thought of saying that Dionysus was with them? Percy knew about their fear of dionysus, and how he turned them inti dolphins. So he got some diet coke as “proof” that he was there and asked frank to turn into a dolphin. Genius, right?

Annabeth called him smart after that.

That was the only time we considered him smart. (Well not ONLY, just one of the few times.) But guess what? He’s been doing smart shit like that for years already.

I cant really mention all of the times he did something smart/wise. If i did it would take me days before i finish typing.

So i realized why we only thought he was smart in hoo but not in pjo.

In PJO, it was in first person, so we saw everything through the eyes of percy. In this series, he only focused about how stupid he was, about how great other people were and how better they are then him. But he doesnt focus about all the good/smart/wise things he’s done. Percy doesnt know that he’s smart. All he knows is that he is stupid, worthless, and all other negative things.

in HOO, however, we were reading from another person’s point of view. We saw percy from another person’s eyes. We noticed things that he doesnt notice himself.

Hazel called him a god, once, because he was just THAT attractive. Everyone else looked up to him, and thinks he’s the most powerful/strongest person to exist.

But Percy doesnt know that. All he knows is that he’s stupid.

SOOOO, long story short, Percy hates himself.
