Here I go again never moving on with feelings unless I write them down. I had just watched the movie About Time and thought of writing some sort of personal review and a few insights about it. (and no I’m definitely not spoiling my friends who have not watched it yet, it’s their choice if they’d like to read this. Lol)
So basically the movie About Time focuses on Tim, a socially awkward, smart, ‘too orange’ guy. His life changes as he turns 21 and his father reveals to him that he can time travel and visit/correct the past. He uses this hereditary trait to his current dilemma which is to get a girlfriend. Well, for a socially awkward klutz, this is such a big boost in getting a girlfriend; he could just undo and redo all unexpected mistakes.
To summarize the movie, I recalled SEVEN key points I have found really remarkable about the movie About Time.
(1) The Brit accent. Oh come on, the accent makes the whole movie subtle and classy.
(2) The crazy clingy sister that Tim considered the best thing in his life. I have two brothers and the relationship I had with one of them was similar to what Tim and Kitkat had. Act like total fools and still have each other’s back when one gets in trouble. Plus Kitkat has this wreckless teen personality that she’s just spontaneous about events in her life. (Hmmm. Familiar?)
(3) A guy’s perspective romance movie. Socially awkward “torpe” guy who stutters and panics when talking to pretty girls, it’s so adorable! Urrrghh.
(4) Tim as the hopeless romantic. Rejected by his first love, the hot blonde who every guy will fall for and almost losing the love of his life he met from a blind date, traveled back and he had just lost Mary’s memory of him on their REAL first date. He waited for her in a Kate Moss museum but figured she had a boyfriend. Travel way back again before she had met her boyfriend and had the most romantic first date ever. They had sex on the first date and he had to redo it, three times to get the wanted feedback!
(5) Portrayal of young love, how happy married couples do exist.
Tim meets his first love after watching some sort of Broadway show. His friend advices him how lucky I guy could be to have sex with that girl (I expected him to cheat Mary!)but he didn’t instead he ran when they were about to enter the room. He ran to Mary who was sleeping and woke her up with fine music, on his knees he asked her to marry him. Mary said YES!
Tim introduces Mary to meet his family. Everyone was thrilled to meet her and even more excited to know they were getting married and Mary is pregnant. Kitkat like a dog, jumps to Mary and kisses her on the floor. They had a church wedding and it rained in their reception, the big tent flew, the cake was destroyed all the guests were wet yet smiling and having good time.
Tim and Mary decided to have kids, one then two, and then three. They took care of their children yet were sweet and like they were still dating. Not like the usual couple who’d fight over the chores and at taking care of the baby. They were a really happy married couple.
(6) The perfect ending, a decision between being able to revisit his dad from the past or a third baby which Mary wanted badly.
There was a quote I once stumbled upon “The past is a great place to visit, but not a good place to stay”. At first, I thought of it as selfish when he chose to have a baby and not the opportunity to revisit his father in the past. But then I realized, you will never grow if you relive yesterday over and over again. The decision was life changing for Tim and it had the perfect plot, something to keep the viewers thinking and realizing in the end.
(7) Modern day YOLO vs. cherishing each moment
Yes “You only live once, but if you do it right once is enough” this statement has too many meanings to it, YOLO doesn’t mean partying every night getting drunk, forgetting responsibilities and having no goals. YOLO does differ for everyone, but what the story taught me is that each moment counts and it is in our hands of how do we deal with the present. Making the desired memories is such great use of time. We may not able to travel back in time, but like Tim, we do not need to, we just have to live the present as we wanted it to be.
Definitely two thumbs up for the movie, About Time!
