Simon's about to close the magazine, throw it in the bin, when a headline catches his attention. WHERE IS WILHELM? The words curl their way inside his chest, bounce around in there along with the familiar ache. Wilhelm. He hasn’t thought about him in a while. Has tried to keep himself busy, his mind on other topics. Where Wilhelm is? Simon doesn’t know. Wishes he did.

Two years ago Wilhelm disappeared. Leaving behind a title of Crown Prince, a family in shambles and a tentative friendship built with a boy he used to love. No one has heard from him since. 

What Simon doesn't know is that Wille might be closer than he could ever imagine.

It’s a short(ish) and sweet story about the woes of dating and how none of that matters when you find the right person to do it with (and don’t stand in your own way by being an idiot). Have a snipped below ☺️

Lisa looks at him over the cup of her own black coffee and states frankly, "Well, you seem to be aware that I am neither blind nor dumb. So even though I had a lovelier time on this date than with many others, I don't like to be the consolation prize for anyone. Especially not if they're ogling the actual prize while said date is happening."

Wille splutters and turns a probably impressive shade of tomato red. "I– what–– no. I mean–"

"Okay, let me rephrase this then: You wrote on your profile that you're queer. You've been staring at the handsome man standing over there"– she nods her head in Simon's direction– "on and off since he went to stand at the counter. And while this man is quite nice to look at, I was fine with looking at him once and appreciating the overall package, while your count is up to ten. Which leaves me no choice but to conclude that you’re completely smitten with him and haven’t worked up the courage yet to do something about it. Am I onto something?"

Young Royals fanfic recs

The abundance of rec lists lately inspired me to make one too. I’ve been reading since July 2021, so in addition to all the amazing works I’ve already seen listed, I wanted to highlight some ‘less topical’ categories of fic for the new arrivals. Here are just a few examples from the mists of my ao3 history.

1. i ask nothing of you by thatgayprince - Multichap, ~44k

The Prince Simon author’s fantastic post-S1 fix-it fic has already been recommended, and I’m sure many people stumble onto it after the PSCU - but I would also like to suggest it as an introduction to their beautiful writing.

 2. reins to my heart by Elin98 - One-shot, ~10k

Another wonderful author whose other works I’ve already seen recommended; I wanted to specifically advertise her many Wilmon meet-cute AUs that will make you smile and squeal like a maniac (e.g. this fairly recent one, where Simon pretends to be a riding instructor).

3. Dear Titanic, how did you feel? by ASkyOfKai - Multichap, ~23k

Here’s an AU of Wilmon on the Titanic that I absolutely adore, by a truly talented author and lovely human being who has gifted us with a whole host of different AUs and canon expansions.

4. So we’re slaves to any semblance of touch by TheBoyWhoWalksInTheLight - One-shot, 2k

This author’s lyrical style really speaks to me - there are a lot of beautiful fics to choose from, but this one is a sweet canon expansion showing Simon’s POV of Wilmon’s first kiss.

There’s some first-class YR fic available in Swedish! I’ve also seen some in other languages, e.g. Spanish, but I can only recommend what I know.

 5. Din tid kommer by eypril - One-shot, ~5k, part of series

I recommend all of this author’s stuff to high heaven for anyone who can read Swedish, and it was very hard to pick just one…but the lot fell on this excellent AU of Wilmon reconnecting years later. (EDIT: This fic has now been translated to English too and it’s wonderful!)

6. Nåt slags förstånd by SilvaGrey - One-shot, 3k, part of series

Here’s an author who not only writes compellingly but researches everything meticulously, which is also clear from this lovely post-S1 fix-it fic from Ludvig’s (and partly Simon’s) POV. (They’ve also translated all their work into English, although I haven’t read the translations.)

hi!! i'm in the process of writing a fic that i plan to post on ao3 and i'm just wondering how you get readers and stuff. i worry that if i just post it no one will ever see it but i'm not sure if there's anything i can do...

hi anon! that’s so cool that you’re in the process of writing! i’m a little bit jealous ngl, embrace that inspiration while you have it!

i can’t say i have any great advice on how to get readers, I’ve always just written things that i would want to read myself and that I’m proud of. some of them have gotten few hits and some have gotten more, I think it depends a lot on how niche a specific work is. and then of course you will automatically get more readers after a while, since people will have read some of your other works and recognize your username.

my main advice would be to just keep writing and improving as a writer and you’ll get readers along the way. see them as a bonus but not the main goal of writing. maybe your first fic won’t get thousands of hits right away but it will get a few and you’ll have some nice comments to be inspired by and you’ll keep writing. that’s the most important part! this fandom is so nice and generous and you will absolutely get some readers just by posting but don’t expect a large following straight away. and if you have a chaptered fic i think following a regular update schedule also helps keeping people invested in the story. not that i would know since I’ve never actually managed that but in theory it sounds good!

Izzy Hands in Our Flag Means Death, season 2 episode 1

Okay but on a serious note Con O'Neill ate in these first few episodes and left no fucking crumbs. Last season we ended on deranged Izzy; now we have an Izzy realizing how toxic things can really get and WISHING he could go back to the days when he was the only proper pirate among muppets. And he's TRYING so damn hard and it would be so easy to play that in a cheesy or insincere manner, but we have Con O'Neill swinging for the fences, crying, begging for death, disheveled, trying to undo everything he did to get us all in this mess and failing and looking both miserable and delighted in his misery because he's getting what he thinks he deserves.

And YET we also get the subtle tear in the eye when Stede finds out what they really did to Ed. Like. You can feel how utterly heartbroken the man is just from a glimmer in the corner of his eye.

Love Izzy, hate Izzy, it really doesn't matter, not when he's played so magnificently by Con, and I salute him for everything he's doing in this campy gay pirate show.
