Black Sails & Text Posts (2/?)
pls enjoy this silverflint edit i made about 7 months ago and completely forgot to post on here
yea
there's something meaningful in how childless black sails is, as a show. there are barely even child extras. there is no second generation, there is no continuation, no 'innocent' unbiased pair of eyes. and when you factor in Treasure Island, you suddenly see that no one exits that story alive except for silver, the pirate king. that world and those people exist solely within his conscience - and then his story is passed down to a young boy. 'there are no legacies in this life' yeah there aren't. 'we have no kings here' yeah and you have no heirs.
vane is legitimately the character with the most respectable politics and most consistent praxis in the show. unfortunately he also is a man and in love with eleanor
eleanorvane is a cautionary tale about the dangers of getting involved with that one woke girl who is toooootally one of you poors
This is like the third time I’ve commented on this, but it’s just so fucking funny to me.
FIRST fucking EPISODE. planting the seeds of the narrative etc. im going insane
anyway thought about 4.10 for too long amd figured out the point of my max+flint=silver theory. im dying squirtle
uhm okay so like. silver forced flint to choose his own ending. right? surrender or die. the question of "what happened on the island" is more about who flint was in that moment than about who silver was. the silver relevant part is how he responded, because all we know is the story he tells madi, and that story has a very different meaning for him depending on its factual truth. either option throws his flintness and maxness out of balance and turns him into one of them. if flint chose death, silver becomes flint, killing him and lying about it for a selfish agenda. if flint chose surrender, silver becomes max, unapologetically betraying him but refusing to carry the guilt of an unnecessary death. choosing one reading has a massive effect on the line "i am not the villain you fear i am, i'm not him" which . did not make sense to me for a good fucking while im gonna be real. because madi never saw flint as a villain like silver did? but the core of it is "what you think i did is evil but its what flint would do, i did not do it, therefore im not flint and not a villain" so if you give silver the maxlike ending the line becomes an honest statement and genuine belief. if you give him the flintlike ending it becomes an intentional lie about his actions and the biggest cope youve ever fucking seen
but we didnt get either of those endings. this has all been a fucking thought experiment bc none of this shit actually happened, they didnt open the schrodingers box so he never became either of these people, he became something far more fucking sinister because The Story Is The Same Either Way. id bet he had that story locked and loaded before they even set foot in that fucking launch. the truth of it matters not at all and THATS who john silver is. hes been like max, hes been like flint, and he uses both their methods but by the end of it all hes not either of them. he exists in the ambiguity, hes MADE from the ambiguity. hes a fucking black hole for truth. not something hidden inside the void, but the void itself.
hes right, hes not flint. but hes definitely a fucking villain.
so i got my sister to watch the first ep of black sails bc she loves piratey stuff and these were here 3 main opinions:
- really truly thought silver looked like harry styles
- convinced that max and eleanor are gonna be sailing the seas together as a power lesbian duo
- very sad anne isn’t irish
(and no i have not told her how short lived maxeleanor is)
(and yes she will continue the show)
This is hilarious out of context.
A little detail I've always enjoyed about Flint is how he Always stands when a "lady" enters the room.
Some of the others play at the nicety in some instances. But with flint it happens Every Time, INCLUDING when he's sitting in literal prison cells and Eleanor comes in to being food and talk.
It's a little piece of his background that still lives in him regardless of where he ends up and it's a cool choice made by the actor
remember when max took eleanor's grandmother in the divorce
captain flint's A+ team-building
no light, no light
holy mother of god this invoked emotions in me I didn't even know I had
