Whenever people say Cal is boring I’m so confused- he builds and rides motorbikes, flies planes, is obsessed with puns, and gave Mare dancing lessons. Like that’s more than twice what most YA love interests get. And in terms of tortured pasts? Literally forced to kill his father and went to war at 12?? And in terms of emotional complexity he has FAULTS he makes MISTAKES it’s not a froofy perfect love affair that minimises the conflict of the story- Mare and Cal are from completely different worlds and that is reflected in their story with appropriate complexity.

Look books aren’t real so I’m not going to go on a rant about romanticising abuse with the whole fandoms’ maven obsession or some shit you can fangirl over whatever you want it’s just that after the first book I always found him tragic but also creepy- all the shit he does is just a complete turnoff and I really don’t get the obsession.
