Hobie Brown became my favourite character based on how he inverted my expectations. When I first heard that Gwen was staying with Hobie, I thought, oh that’s nice, she made friends she can hang out with. Then it started to feel territorial, with people practically taunting Miles with how awesome Hobie is and how he and Gwen hang out a lot. I was ready for them to meet, start bickering and for their dynamic to be one-up-man-ship until Miles earns his respect. Kind of like Lego Batman and Emmett.

But then I was pleasantly surprised, downright overjoyed, when the initial tension gave way to full support, shared good humour and fast friendship. The fact that Hobie told Miles to use the venom blast through his whole palm, I thought he was just taunting him and showing off how strong and experienced he was. Nope, he set up Miles for an escape and gave him the nod of approval before ducking out while giving everyone involved in the chase the middle finger. Already my favourite character.

You know, I see the posts and memes about family dynamics between Batman and the rest of the Batfam and Justice League, how everyone wishes it could feature more in the comics. And they are some of the best character interactions you can have with these characters.

I just realised that this dynamic existing back in the 40s through 60s was probably popular because that's what people wanted to about in family dynamics. Albeit with an "Aw shucks" mentality. They thought these superfriends worked better as a stereotyped 1940s household ol' chum.

I actually really want the comics to show the superheroe found family of "introverted, wants to die but is actually touch starved" weirdo's. Mainly so that in two decades the next generational mentality can look back and go, seriously were these people all right, is this what they wanted to read about? The same way we think about the golden age comics.

Man this show had so many characters that need therapy. Wait, who am I kidding. Every show I watch needs therapy.

And these are just the shows I watched. Edit: Almost forgot one.

After finishing season one, I have so many thoughts swimming in my head. One of those is my hope that Jinx goes full anarchist in season 2.  See, I’ve been getting some Catra vibes from Jinx, being friend's with the other protagonist, being left behind, raised in a toxic environment and led to believe their path is to be a conqueror. But while Catra returned and tried to rise herself to be a true leader, she never truly felt comfortable in the role.

But Jinx, I hope she becomes more like her game counterpart, foregoing any gang affiliation, criminal empire, ideological war for Zaum. I hope she turns out like the Joker of the Arcane universe. Someone who is so terrifying even the other villains in the show are scared of her. Who doesn’t make alliances or can be hired for a job. She just does what she does and makes no apology.

Now, I hope this leaves room for her to get slightly better, like Harley Quinn, to be the occasional anti-hero that helps the “heroes” when a bigger, badder threat comes up and she is given a ten minute head start after the conflict is over. Because while the sister conflict is angsty and dramatic, we all want a moment when the two will come together like actual sisters, though that won’t be until season 3. She needs to strike out on her own, be that annoyance in the back of everyones minds, the criminal who makes her own posters (apparently she does that) and spends her loot on neon spray paint to make her symbols. Basically, I hope season two is Vi and Caitlyn being tasked with cleaning up the under-city, there’s a new big bad on the horizon and in their spare time, they try to arrest and rehabilitate Powder who has gone on a mad spree. Who doesn’t want to see Jinx release a zoo of animals into the street and rearrange the street signs with tactical precision just because it made sense in her own mind.

Owl House (Belos) Crack(ed)

This is simultaneously hilarious and fucking terrifying. This isn't just a spirit or demon with phenomenal cosmic power, this is a kid version of Bill Cipher before he realised what it means to be cruel. This kid doesn't know that playing tag with the main characters means he could disintegrate them with a touch. That a spell meant to drain people of their life and power is as easy to overcome as moving the goals posts.

Belos was a fanatic who focused hiss vendetta and couldn't be reasoned with unless you understood him.

The Collector is aimless and chaotic. The only ones who can reason with it have minds that are aged by trauma and become cynical that they have to really think about how to talk to a kid who wants to play games and will have a universe ending tantrum if you don't play fair.

I don't know what Belos or The Collector has planned. So I can't theorize for the next couple of months until we find out. And that unnerves me greatly.

What the series thrives on is having the perfect villain for each point in time. Belos was perfect because it parallels Luz's journey, but she's not strong enough to fight him. The Collector is perfect, because now both Luz and King are more mature, but that mindset won't help them against a being with childlike innocence.

You know, I only saw Gravity Falls after it had come out. A friend recommended it to me and I put off watching it until I saw some more clips. It was halfway through season 2 when I started. By the time I caught up the series had ended so I literally watched the beginning and end of Gravity Falls in a week. I never got that experience of week in, week out, wait for the next episode like I did with Doctor Who as I did with these episodic animated series.

Now, all this to say, after watching the penultimate cliffhangers for Owl House AND Amphibia, I think I get what so many fans were feeling. The anticipation, not knowing, or wanting to know, even with all the fan theories and clues, what happens next.

And the sad thing is, I only got into these shows at the winding down of quarantine. I got to Season 2 of Amphibia in a binge watch, Season 1 of Owl House likewise. I really hope more weird as he'll shows come out soon with the episodic adventure that I wait a whole week for the next instalment. I missed that with Steven Universe, RWBY, Avatar (Aang and Korra).

But I suppose it's like they say, the mark of a fan isn't thst we were there from the start, but we stayed til the end.

When you really think about the way this series has been progressing, it is incredible how it never crossed our minds that the ultimate villain in a show full of witches isn't a super wizard, ancient demon or giant monster, but a puritanical witch hunter lost in time who still thinks it's the mid-1600s. The fanatical devotion to absurd beliefs that women who were deemed wanton and wilful were possessed and gave their souls to Satan. That is the ultimate villain of not only witchcraft, but freedom, creativity, and expression.

And the fact that the whole island is the source for myths that conflict with his views of religious dogma. The fact that it's an island free of discrimination based on species, sexuality or race. The only things that do emerge are inherent classicism and power play when comparing magical powers. Belos wants to wipe out the island to stop it's spread into the human realm, it's influence on human society and apparent corruption of faith.

And like all fanatics, they believe themselves to be right and opposition to be wrong, all the while charging headfirst into a belief that is outdated, harmful and ultimately pointless. Humanity has changed and no amount of blind religious fervour will affect that change.

Belos has become one of the Great Disney villains. Up there with Frollo, Gaston, Maleficent and Tremaine.

And that's because he takes an element from each of them to make the ultimate antithesis to Luz and her growth. She is becoming more balanced, keeping her creative spirit, but becoming more aware of her actions and choices and how they affect others. Belos deals in absolutes, is hypocritically dipping his hand into wild magic to destroy it. Luz is using her focus, dedicated work ethic and maturity to save wild magic.
