Some folks invest in secluded property because they want to have an escape from their everyday lives or diversify their portfolios (whatever that even means). Others rent homes because they need a big ol’ pad to in which conduct elaborate rituals. To each their own, right? Set against the wild, desolate backdrop of the Welsh countryside, A Dark Song is primarily interested in more interior landscapes: how are people affected by grief and loss, and to what lengths would they go to find resolution? Director Liam Gavin strips the idea of a supernatural horror film to the bone, relying on a slow, excruciating escalation of tension and hair-raising sound design to provide the chills, until all hell breaks loose in the film’s final moments.
