How much experience do you have in writing out combat scenes? I've been struggling to get these scenes out of my mind on on to paper.
not too much, but I’ve gotten a lot better at writing action scenes over the years, the biggest thing to focus on is the pacing and the physical action, you have to make sure people know what’s going on
Some ways to control the pacing are:
Short sentences, make the writing feel like how the action is moving, short and fast
Break the description up with dialogue, this will flow better in general
VERY LITTLE internal monologue, keep your reader and your character in the moment, they aren’t thinking they’re doing
Give it purpose, make sure there’s a reason the fight is going on so that the reader wants to know how it turns out instead of forcing their way through it, I know I’m not a big fan of pointless violence descriptions
Have someone else read it, have someone you respect read the scene and then tell you how they imagined it going, if there’s blanks or any confusion focus on those spots
There are some general tips! You can also go study experts at writing thrillers such as authors like Karin Slaughter and Louis L’Amour, look up their scenes and take notes on how they do it
good luck! And happy writing~
If you can, playing games lile D&D may help with it too. That's the medium I started stretching my legs out with flashy combat description and it was just great practice.

#Inktober is still safe y’all.
There’s some Drama™ starting up that’s based heavily on misinformation and the actions of one rogue lawyer so I encourage y’all to fact check before spreading rumors.
YES, the creator of the #INKTOBER hashtag has a book coming out;
YES, he previously asked one of his lawyers to have a cease and desist sent to a few COMPANIES selling Inktober-branded merch without permission;
NO, this was never intended to target artists selling and marketing their own work;
NO, there are no lawsuits going out targeting artists;
YES, Jake has contacted said lawyer instructing them to cut it the hell out:
Calm down folks. We’re good. Put the pitchforks away.
It’s being dealt with. Breathe, and remember to fact-check before spreading panic.
And of course, as always: Be kind. :)
Controversial opinion but the Wii was actually a good system, it just had a heavy focus on nonviolent games that didn’t appeal to the American gaming demographic at the time.
Wii: here’s some fun sports games! Also you can play Mario Kart or some Legend of Zelda!
Every other video game: Here’s a machine gun, kill everyone in sight.
you’re right and you should say it
This isn’t… Controversial. It is, however, wrong.
The Wii was by far the most successful console of its generation in the US (and globally). And it was that successful specifically because it’s broad array of nonviolent games made it hugely appealing to most of the US’s entertainment seeking public.
It absolutely appealed to the US demographic. It even appealed to the US “gamer” demographic.
What it did not appeal to, however, was the Dark And Edgy vibe that many gaming advertisers at the time wanted to emphasize, and given how many negative connotations a lot of people now have about self-described “gamers” being violent and anti social thanks to GamerGate, it also doesn’t fit in with the modern stereotype of the violent-incel gamer.
But just because the Wii doesn’t conform to stereotyping does not mean it failed or was unpopular. It unequivocally won the Seventh Console Generation, leaving the ps3 and Xbox 360 tens of millions of units in the dust.
It’s just most of the hardcore gamers like to pretend it failed.
maybe there’s some confusion? the WiiU sold poorly.
No, the “gamers” were very against the Wii. Regularly made fun of wii owners, and tried to push the narrative the wii was a failure.
Largely because it tried to be fun an innovative, didn’t focus exclusively on graphics, and was accessible to casual gamers.
I’d call myself and my group of friends “hardcore gamers” as in we play *alot* and we are competitive. To the point of making our own overwatch team. And I can’t think of at least one person who dissed on the Wii. It was an inarguably a massive success? Tge WiiU now? Oh boy, that’s the boomer console
As someone who’s played on all those consoles (Wii, xbox360, and ps3) I fairly enjoyed all of them, but the Wii by far was one of my favorites. Unlike the other 2 main console, having that family friendly content was just comforting. It helped balance out all the shit talking and competition that xbox and playstation are well known for.
Nintendo is notorious for creating games to be fun and happy. Just a game. I remember playing super mario galaxy (1 and 2) and having the most fun I’ve ever had in a game. To this day it’s one of my favorite games for its unique worlds, story, and music. I love having some good gun fights dont get me wrong, but at the end of the day wii sport resort was the bomb.
And yes, the fucking WiiU was the worst thing nintendo made.. awful. But hey, now they have the switch.
