Anakin think he’s gone COMPLETELY insane (maybe he’s finally been electrocuted too many times and its fried his brain). He doesn’t tell anyone though because he can still fight just fine just… everything is a lot more musical. He doesn’t want to be thought crazy and taken off the front lines.

Once he figures out what the various musical cues mean he actually finds them useful in figuring out how dangerous a situation is. Also battles are so much cooler now and boring landscapes are slightly less boring because at least now they have mood music. Yep, he can live with this.

(Although he is always confused why the ominousness that is The Imperial March starts playing at some of his decisions)

the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

I was at a Memorial Day BBQ over the weekend, and as I'm sitting there enjoying the company of friends, the subject of AI came up. But mostly I'm flummoxed because just last year every single one of these guys deleted facebook and messenger and instagram and twitter and started using Singal to communicate because it's more secure and 'doesn't give away your data'. And. Just what the HELL do they think the AI chatbot is doing?

I refuse. I will hold this line. It gets hard to type sometimes because of the MS and my hands, but I will NOT use AI to outsource my brainpower.

I have further complaints. The makers should have been honest about thus being a list of English language works. Much as I adore the few translated works on it, they are few. And how could you leave off works like All Quiet On The Western Front or The Stranger while listing three Dickens novels. (I know I keep harping on that, but i just don't like his books, ok? Sure I think he wrote some great novels but three on this list is overkill)

And I'll note that in my complaint about works of translations, my euopean bias is showing, I just haven't read a lot of translated works that aren't a Euopean language and can't speak to the indignity of other translated works being left off this dumbass list. But if the vast, vast majority of your "100 greatest novels" are English language novels, at least have the honesty to admit it's the "100 greatest English language novels" and leave off the few translated works you listed to make it seem like you're considering all novels. At least then you'd have room for Lonesome Dove, or something.

26. Which is fine, I've been meaning to read more and I should get on that. Also, just once I'd like to see one of these lists challenge themselves to one book per author. I mean, yes, many authors have written multiple great books, but allowing yourself to pick say 3 Dickens books means that books like another author has none and something gets left off. Rude. Or Huckleberry Finn. What the hell kind of great books list lists three Dickens novels but leaves out Huckleberry Finn. Fuckass list I'll tell you what.

it is very interesting to see the language of contemporary book criticism co-opted by Christian Nationalists to remove books from classrooms and libraries.

One recent example: My novel Turtles All the Way Down was banned from being taught in English classes because one school board member claimed it "romanticizes mental illness."

(It does no such thing, of course. TAtWD makes mental illness seem really unpleasant and not at all either lowercase-r or capital-r romantic. To acknowledge something's existence is not to romanticize that thing. But part of co-opting this language is misusing it for the end of removing books thematically centered on mental illness, or physical illness, or sex, or anything else that might be deemed insufficiently inocuous for Educational Literature.)

But the question of when writing about something veers into romanticizing it IS actually a very important question for contemporary literary criticism, and one that's been explored a lot (sometimes with generosity and care, sometimes not) in book discourse online. So the Christian Nationalist Right is using the language of analysis that we are using in ways that are at best misguided and at worst disingenuous.

It's really discouraging--I mean, on a personal level obviously but also just as an American who believes teachers should be allowed to teach--to see such widespread book bans in American high schools and libraries. But it's not surprising, really. Books retain a lot of power--to deepen our empathy with those who are suffering, to connect us to ourselves and to others, and to see the full humanity of those who might be dehumanized or marginalized by the social order.

On that front, the Christian Nationalists are right to worry. Books can be a path into loving one's neighbor as one's self, and seeing the full light of the sacred in the experiences of the marginalized. God forbid.
