too tired to make the whole post but. theres an au in my head where john is the one to break into sam's house and take him back into the hunting world to look for dean, who's on a hunting trip and hasnt been home in a few days. they yell at each other and almost physically fight countless times and sam hates him SO much, but he stays, he has to stay, he has to do this for his brother. its only at the end of season 1 that we learn dean actually died right before the pilot, and john's been pretending he didn't know so he could keep an eye on sam without him running away. their biggest argument happens when sam finds out, and when he's finally about to leave, john makes a deal with azazel to resurrect dean.
season 2 then starts with a sam that has to process all of this, explain to his freshly back from the dead brother everything that happened the last year and, finally, ask HIM. "what happened one year ago ?"
it’s rlly funny jack says all this stuff abt being willing to kill dean if it means stopping michael and having to do The Hard Thing that dean would also want done or likely do himself but then when it comes to the actual Hard Thing of accepting that dean and sam are mortal guys who can and will die someday and that the grief will only hurt because they were so loved, he says that sounds awful and dive-bombs michael to save and Keep the guys. fakest idgafer in the universe right here
SO many in fact. He's one of my favorite characters on the show!!
My favorite thing about him is that once he chooses free will, it doesn't come to him easily. I love his self admitted pride and arrogance and how that fits so nicely in line with how deeply insecure and guilty he really is. He so, so desperately wants to be important to Sam and Dean. He needs to be needed. He gets lost in that without realizing that he is ALREADY so important to the Winchesters.
I love how he constantly makes bad decisions in the name of love and protecting what he loves. I love how good intentions don't erase the hurt he causes. I love how hard he tries to atone for his mistakes /to dean specifically/ without realizing he doesn't have to. Dean forgives him every single time without fail. Sometimes Dean was never mad to begin with.
I feel like when people talk about how Dean acted when they found out about Sam's blood drinking they forget how insane and horrifying it would be to watch your brother cannibalize another human being, like sure it's an allegory for addiction and there's a lot about going cold turkey that's dangerous, but also you have to remember that he's not drinking 'demon blood' he's drinking human blood from people who happen to be possessed, it's not heroin or cocaine or alcohol, it's people...
Reblogging again because I've seen some discussion in my tags and I still feel like people don't really grasp the horror of it. Like it's not, oh no poor Sam has been falsely imprisoned, it's oh no Sam is an active danger to other people, because he will drink their blood. Because his ends justify the means mentality completely ignores all those who might suffer along the way. Because he's so blinded by the power and revenge fantasy he ignored the fact that he was actively and obviously being led on by a literal demon of hell. Dean doesn't say he would rather Sam die human than become a monster for shits and giggles, he knows exactly what is waiting in hell, he would never want that for Sam. And then he kills that nurse and drains her blood, they've killed monsters for that. Sam killed Gordon for that. Like they were right to try and lock him up because he did go kill someone very soon after, and no I don't think Dean pushed him into it I think that's exactly where Ruby was leading him the entire time.
