freyawoods:
It wasn’t often that Freya succumbed to these moods of hers. As somebody who made it her job to nurture and care for others, she had learnt well how to push her feelings aside. After all, how could she be a pillar to lean on if she herself could crumble? Noble as her intentions were, it hadn’t been infallible. One could only ignore their own needs for so long, after all. And it seemed she had reached the end of her rope. Still, knee deep in her despondence and isolation, she couldn’t recognise it as such. Wouldn’t. It was simply an off day. Or…an off few weeks. She would get over it soon. It was the same narrative she found herself having to relay again and again to her persistent brother — the only person she anticipated to be on the other side of the door.
She spoke before even reaching for the knob, “Finley, I love you but if you’re over again to ask if I’m okay, I’m going to—” Though her words had quickly died down upon coming face to face with Jackson. She was dumbfounded. Speechless, even, as she had accepted his offering. It was only the barging of her furry companion against her legs on his way to greet their visitor that prompted the gears in her mind to turn, lips twitching upward the slightest bit. He was here. Of all of the people (or rather, the lack of) that had come by to check in on her, he had made an effort to. Even if it had truly just been for the reason that he claimed, the fact that he had thought of her in any capacity warmed her heart. “You…came all the way over to my apartment to give me dog treats?” She bit back the urge to laugh, lest that send the man running off.
he could see the confusion on her face and he knew he was somewhat mimicking it, not entirely certain what had brought him here either. it wasn’t like him and freya were like that - their friendship did mostly consist of one-sided conversations; freya checking up on him when he was insistent that he didn’t want her too. and yet, without her around, everything had felt different, in a bad way. jackson would say that it was because he didn’t like change, and he’d gotten used to having the pesky blonde in his life. but realistically it was because they were friends now. and he liked having her around most of the time.
his eyes darted down to the excitable golden retriever as the dog eagerly attempted to squeeze past freya to greet him, his face switching from timid and confused to annoyed. “she gave them to me a week ago.” lie. deflect. that was how he handled the uncomfortable question posed to him. how was he supposed to tell freya that the old woman actually just knocked on his door this morning - and that his first thought was that he could give them to her? that was information best kept to himself. “and i was waiting for you to show up to hand them over but you never did. and i would’ve felt bad throwing them out because it definitely would’ve fucked up my karma more than it already is, so.” shrugging his shoulders, he hoped freya wouldn’t press more into his surface level, lame excuses. instead, he jerked his chin towards the door. “can i come in? or are we just going to stand here and stare at each other for a while?”
phoebe-adair:
“Nothing if not consistent.” She sighed. How many times would she let strangers break her heart before she learned her lesson? Looking up at Jackson, she figured that she may always be soft as water, turned inside out with feelings she felt she couldn’t put down. Phoebe knew she was supposed to give her feelings to someone, one day maybe- but the idea of putting it down, expecting another person to keep them safe, give them back the same. The truth was she cared for Jackson far more than he did her, surely far longer. He’s sitting here. A small naive voice quaked from inside of her like the gesture of human kindness was enough to allow herself to forgive him for the pain. The bar was on the ground, and men like Jackson Rhodes brought shovels. They would hollow you out, take and take until you had nothing to give, and Phoebe would let them. Her needy heart was too hungry for attention, for remembrance to not give it all away. Even now, through her palpable anger and sadness, she knew she was a few soft words from forgiving him, and if those never came, the small hope that forgiveness eventually would never go out. “You ever think of doing anything differently, or are you just too gruff for that- too hard to let people in?” Her nose crinkled on the word gruff. She was half teasing past her anger. Looking away from him, she kept her eyes on the sky for a long time. So black beyond the light pollution that it could swallow you whole, and no one would ever know where you went. You’re a black sky she thought, a sideways glance his way before looking back into the empty open sky. “I was an actor, not that I should take personal offense to anything you say.” Phoebe tore her eyes from the sky. “I thought it was okay. Small town for sure, and yea some of the people sucked, but I liked the uncertainty of the whole thing.” She looked at him now, “I left not long after you did. I had a fling who got fucking weird.” Shrugging, she didn’t need to dive into details. “ so I bounced.” Then, patting the cement, she added,“I’ve been here ever since.” Phoebe kept looking over at him. Every few sentences, she was convinced she heard hints of emotion or guilt in his tone. She wanted to see if she could see it in his face, but the tone like him passed like a phantom, and she didn’t think to push him on it. I’m…what? Phoebe grimaced when he didn’t finish the sentence. I’m angry. I’m done here, I’m hungry, cold, hot…sorry? She wanted him to be sorry, she wanted it so badly her nails gripped the cement and released on a slow breath. How hard was it to let her know he was sorry for hurting her- maybe she should be sorry for having thought more of him than he had himself. Phoebe flipped her head, the messy bun on top of her head flopping over as she gave him a watery smile. “C'mon, Jackson, you know I’m impossible to forget.” Sarcasm, hope, anger- they were tangled now as she lifted her gaze up at him. “You could run another few cities, see if I catch up with you in a few years, and we can do it all over again…running, chasing-” she flipped her hand back and forth for emphasis. “I’m sorry you felt you had to forget the people who care.” She added on a serious note. Stretching her legs off the curb, she looked down at her hands, feeling hollowed out. “You’re allowed to keep things, to keep people, memories. I mean, is it easier living the way you have…don’t you ever get lonely?”
he felt her gaze shift back onto him from the sky, but he kept his own lingering on the dark stretch of clouds above them. jackson considered her words. he hadn’t always been like this, he wanted to explain. he had been soft once, and kind; the kind of kid who saved worms off the cement on his walks home from school. but eventually, the pain that came with being that way had been too much for him to bear. he wasn’t as strong as the likes of phoebe and freya and aubrey; allowing themselves to feel the hurt that was thrown at them and picking themselves up after it. so he turned it all, refusing to acknowledge his emotions. it didn’t save him from the heartbreak; he learned that lesson over and over again, but it did stop him from creating bonds, from opening up to people. he couldn’t connect in the way they wanted him too. people reached for him, and he winced away, too afraid of the power he handed over to them if he did. instead, he drew his legs up towards his chest, letting his elbows rest against his knees. his fingers clasped around his wrist. “maybe.” he answered finally, “but i’m not one for taking the hard route.”
he paused thoughtfully for a moment, his head turning in her direction for the first time since he’d joined her on the pavement. his eyes could only bring themselves to her hands, no higher - but it was still more acknowledgment than he’d given her in the past 5 minutes. “you shouldn’t take it personally.” he chose his words carefully, “you were the only reason i lasted as long as i did.” it was the first show of warmth that he gave her the entire time they’d been talking - and just like that, he closed it off once more. at the very least, he decided, she deserved to know that. she had been important to him, in some way, for a short period of time. they all were. though his actions weren’t the best at showing them that.
the conversation drifted, albeit briefly, to what had happened after his escape, and jackson grimaced, knitting his brows. his curiousity was piqued, though he let it die out - he knew when to press, and this wasn’t one of those times. after all, the last time he’d goaded phoebe into sharing, he’d gotten up left the next day. that didn’t exactly bode well for show and tell. instead, he thought about his own time in new york. he never meant to end up staying. and yet here he was, seven years later. he still didn’t have anything substantial to show for it. a cat, and a job, and a shitty apartment that he couldn’t even be bothered to fix. his relationships had been fickle and his friendships just as much ( the closest he’d gotten to a close friend was finn, and even that recently proved itself to be less foolproof than he had originally thought. ) but he was still here. he shrugged. “it’s not the worst place to end up.” he decided.
the dramatic movement of her hair drew his attention to her face, finally - though he was quick to avert his gaze back down to his own hands. his fingers plucked at the wristband of his watch. “hmph,” he huffed in response to her... teasing? sarcasm? the line between anger and exhaustion was blurring at this point. “where do you want to go next, then? i’ll get a head start. boston? san diego? i don’t like the heat.” was his dry response, his voice still void of any emotions. but it was easy to make snarky quips - until she got serious once more, and jackson felt his shoulders tense. “i’m better off alone.” he cut her off suddenly, abruptly, the words cold as steel. it wasn’t an answer, but it was the truth he believed.
tyler-hill:
for: open @villagestart location: secondhand bookstore in manhattan, wednesday, 6:30pm
Tyler was heading into hour two of standing in this bookstore. The pile of books in the basket by his feet had grown quite a bit since he walked in. But August was winding down and he needed to get to work building the library for his classroom. It was time to recoup the loss of books from the last school year. He didn’t mind the books that wandered from his classroom throughout the year. How could you get mad at a kid for wanting to read? So bringing in new books every year was a necessary evil. Reading the back cover, Tyler’s face twisted in a bit of confusion. “Are you good or utter garbage? I can’t tell…” Tyler mumbled to himself. Turning to his right, he looked at the person next to him. “Completely subjective question, I know, but does this look good to you? Or rather, do you think high schoolers would want to read this?
glancing up from the novel jackson held in his hands, his gaze flickered to the man’s face and then to what he was holding. “high schoolers only want to read what you force them to read. or what they’re not allowed to read.” he said simply, reaching out to put his own option back on the shelf in front of him. they’d both been lingering there for long enough; it was only a matter of time before one of them spoke to the other in the silence of the store. “i only read catcher and the rye because i heard a bunch of american schools had it banned at some point or another for profanity.” with a shrug, he took a step back, surveying the shelves. his hands found their way into the pockets of his jeans. “you look a little too old for high school.” he deadpanned, although his eyebrow twitched in amusement, “what’re you trying to appeal for them for?”
phoebe-adair:
She cut her green eyes up at him. Her chest hurt to look at him and to know everything she thought she knew now. It was like a storm beneath her skin, swirling and swirling, making her head spin and her stomach sick. She wanted to fight back, to argue against what he was saying. But maybe he was right, maybe her opinion of him was terrible, but she still fucking cared. Wiping mascara away from her eyes, “Yea, well, knowing you’re a dick doesn’t necessarily stop me from giving a damn.” She sighed and shook her head to tear her eyes away from his face. Phoebe didn’t work that way- caring was concrete. Or as concrete as fickle things like emotions could be. If there was ever a person who breached the limits of her affections, she had not met them yet and hoped she never would. Caring was what helped her get through everything, it’s the excuse she gave herself for every damn thing she denied herself from taking, from asking for- you care, so you suffer. It was bitter and almost poetic if it wasn’t so fucking pathetic. Phoebe furrowed her brows as he sat near her, “What, not the picture of cunning beauty?” Or whatever other fucking line she’d heard early that night slipping past her lips in not so casual conversation with her least favorite ghost, or was he her favorite? Phoebe couldn’t decide if she liked the emotional upheaval. The reminder she could feel so profoundly wasn’t overdue, but sometimes she worried the ability to feel would slip away, and she’d be as hollow as Jackson was. She visibly shivered at the thought. Phoebe nearly laughed. Sometimes it was harder than she cared to admit to be mature, not to take easy jabs. She cleared her throat instead and laid her head against her knees. “Then how do you do it?” She wanted to know, her voice small and carrying only between the two of them as the rest of the city went on and on into the night; they were just two people in the background now. “I never stopped wondering what happened to you, hoping you were happy. You were alive.” Phoebe curled a fallen strand of hair behind her ears. “I know it was only a few weeks but-” She didn’t feel the need to repeat what she’d already said. Instead, Phoebe let it hang between them in the city silence. Phoebe shifted and looked into the skyline- she’d always hoped she’d see stars. “I’m practically never sober.” She shared, “but I remember everything…I wish I had been able to forget you too.” Exhaling, Phoebe tried pressing buttons on her dead phone, hoping it would just come back on. “You could have said goodbye, Jackson. I wouldn’t have stopped you made you feel bad for leaving.” She added, “If you remember, then it should matter enough for just two words.” When she had run away, Phoebe didn’t tell her mom goodbye, their relationship still hadn’t recovered, and she had spent the last twelve years trying to forget that night. She cut the train of thought with a quite hum, her eyes stuck to the night sky free of any stars, barely a moon. “I miss the stars the most.” She was referencing their time together- the trope had rented a house in the country, a small theater in the middle of nowhere but historic and well loved. It made for beautiful nights where it looked like you could fall into space.
he huffed in annoyance as she hit back at him, her sarcasm matching his every step of the way. it was frustrating. for all that jackson pretended not to care, it seemed that phoebe mirrored the opposite. he was cold, closed off, unavailable; she was overly emotional, everything she was feeling displayed so prominently across her face. she had always been that way - and maybe that was why she had been so easy to manipulate. she had fallen so hard for the game he played because of who she was, and how badly she seemed to want to believe in him. he was starting to sense a pattern in that.
“i don’t know.” he sighed, resting his hands on the edge of the curb and letting his legs stretch out in front of him. “it’s just how i’ve always done things.” that was the most he was willing to give her - and even that may have been more than jackson would give most other people. he wasn’t one to open up. no matter how guilty he felt, he could never explain to her the family in seattle that he burdened, and how the pain he carried through childhood was what chased him away from every place he considered settling down in. even now, new york didn’t quite feel like the home he was chasing. it just so happened that he found a handful of reasons to stay longer than he intended. but he always figured he would leave eventually, when the time came. he knew he was restless.
he turned his gaze up to squint towards the sky, his hands curling into the cement. “i fucking hated it there.” he admitted, after a moment of silence. “dealing with the actors and the crew who knew i had no idea what i was doing…” he trailed off, before punctuating it with a shrug. “it was never going to be a permanent solution.” was that guilt in his tone? probably. glancing down at the ground again, he picked up a different rock and chucked it across the cement, grimacing. “i’m - “ sorry. the word sat on the tip of his tongue, unsaid. it wouldn’t matter. he couldn’t take back the pain he gave her, or the time they shared. and if he could go back, he knew he would make the same decisions; even knowing now where they would end up. the other options were just too scary. “i always thought just leaving was better, you know. i never meant to hurt anyone. i figured it makes me easier to forget.”

Don’t ever think that everyone who leaves wants to.

aubreyjennings:
𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐉𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 this difficult to talk to? Had she not set clear boundaries for herself where her ex was concerned, she might as well have gotten the urge to jump up from her seat and shake him. Desperate for a straight answer back for once. And not the same thing repeated back to her over and over like some broken record. It was easy to reflect and look back on their relationship and see it for what it was when she was obviously so much happier in her life now. When, sitting here, looking at Jackson, Aubrey truly couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that she had ever dated someone that closed off and hopelessly incapable of ever expressing his emotions. When she had always been an open book. So very in touch with her feelings that she probably might as well have felt for the two of them.
“I just don’t see how that’s even possible when we were never really friends to begin with,” the brunette spoke, decidedly and in all her sincerity, hoping that that would shed some light on where she stood and why she had been so hesitant to let him back into her life. “I know that we dated and I know that we shared some good moments but you abandoned me for the greater part of it. You only ever showed up when you felt like it. Even when we hooked up last time…” Her hazel hues caught hold of Jackson’s once more as she desperately hoped he knew how much she meant it. “Did you ever even care about me?”
once again, aubrey circled back around to their failed relationship, and it visibly made jackson uncomfortable. up until now, he’d found it fairly easy to ignore it all. looking past their brief reconnection at the party months ago, jackson had shoved all mentions of their relationship - the handful of snarky quips aside - to the back of his mind. it wasn’t something he needed to think about. but as aubrey brought all of it back to light again, his nose twitched in annoyance, his gaze immediately averting away from her as soon as her eyes met his. talking about feelings wasn’t his strong suit. jackson would sooner use anger to mask all of it - tell aubrey he didn’t care about her, and in fact had spent their entire relationship just using her to feel something. but it would be a lie. and he was getting exhausted of lying.
“at some point, yeah.” he deadpanned, his voice lacking emotion - a defense mechanism for the way the words sitting on the tip of his tongue felt like a vulnerability jackson was far too afraid of. “i mean, you’re the only person i ever - “ and he cut himself off, his jaw clamping shut as soon as the words came out. instead, he sat in an aggravated silence for a moment. “it doesn’t matter. you think you’re better than me: you and your boyfriend who has decided i’m public enemy number one and the perfect, internet-worthy life you’ve created for yourself. it never would’ve worked out.” i couldn’t ever have been what you wanted. but he kept that last part to himself.
phoebe-adair:
.
Phoebe groaned and rolled her eyes, “Are you not paying attention?” She asked shooting a fiery glare up at him. “My opinion of you was so high, Jackson and I was so fucking naive.” An exhale stuttered past her lips. “I mean it’s like you don’t want to believe you could have mattered and I don’t know what that says about you but I don’t have the emotional energy to make it make sense.” Flustered she gestured up to him with a wave of her hand. “Whatever.” She decided on mirroring his indifference with a touch of petulance. God did she forget how to mature as she aged or was she forever stuck being an emotionally immature woman who couldn’t deal with her feelings well. She had three reactions, over react, under-react or running away. She liked running away, she liked not dealing with her problems, not having to face the disappointment of not being enough for people. She’d done it one too many times in her younger years and decided that she hated it and would avoid at almost any cost. The reminder of herself sparked a small amount of guilt. She was angry at Jackson for something she had done herself; it hurt when it was done to you when you thought you were worth more. Phoebe shot a glare his way, “You really shouldn’t comment on the way a lady looks. It’s rude.” She pointed out while pushing her waves away from her face and pulling them into a messy bun. Phoebe wiped her face and hoped it did something for her appearance. “Sparkly and new?” She bit her tongue as soon as it left her lips; grow up, she chastised herself. “I’m sorry…I’m not trying to be a bitch but you know it’s kinda easy sometimes.” Tilting back she eyed the street name, “I’m only six or seven blocks…I can make it on my own I just need a moment to not feel like I’m going to throw up.” Phoebe shook her head, “My phone is dead, I don’t know any number by heart but my mother and she’s in Connecticut.” Phoebe knew he knew about her, the adoptive mother, and her bio mom; she’d told him, and absently she wondered if he remembered the things she’d shared. It haunted her now that he knew, a stranger who didn’t care about abandoning someone who had been a friend. It made her feel vulnerable to think he knew these things. Phoebe adverted her eyes, shrugging slim shoulders. “She’s not an option.” Relaxing her shoulders Phoebe cut her eyes up at him. “Do you remember any of it?” She asked despite her better judgment telling her not to. “When you were there, or do you forget it when you leave?”
he bit back a snarky reply, his teeth physically digging into the skin of his cheek. ‘you could have mattered.’ for a time, perhaps. in the moment. people came and they went, and he believed that they all cared for him in some way or another. it was just that caring only got you so far. and how many people wanted to put up with the consequences of being a part of his life? very few, he bet. his own mother didn’t want too, and he had just been a child, then. what would happen as an adult? things were safer this way, he knew that.
"pretty sure we crossed that bridge already.” he sighed, reaching his hand up to rub at the centre of his forehead. as she reached her hands up to scrub at her face - a weak attempt at wiping away the effects of their conversation - he simply frowned, his brows knitting together. “i - you know what? forget it.” he huffed, turning his attention to look at the cars passing them on the street. at least the staring had stopped, he thought to himself. nothing to see anymore. they blended in with the other late-night new yorkers. the mention of her mother drew an uncomfortable expression over his features, and jackson shifted back and fourth between his feet. it was likely uncomfortable for both of them; she could stay stuff like that, and they’d both know what she meant. as much as he didn’t like people to know him, he didn’t want to know them, either. it made it harder to let go. “that’s not much help.” he mused, before heaving another sigh and dropping to sit on the cement beside her.
the last sentence caught him off guard. it was a difficult one to stomach, and jackson swallowed. he liked to pride himself on that - on the apathy he had for it all, as though he didn’t care. as if leaving didn’t completely tear the heart out of him every time he did it. and it worked. most of the people who’d fallen victim to his antics were left with a bittersweet taste - one that told them that jackson rhodes had been an illusion, and never cared for them at all. but it was a lie. the people he’d come into contact with, people like phoebe, they had mattered to him. it had broken his heart to leave them. “despite what everyone thinks, i’m not a robot, phoebe.” he answered bluntly, hunching his shoulders and forcing his eyes down at his shoes. shuffling his foot over the ground, he watched as he unseated a few pebbles lodged the concrete and they went skittering across the pavement. “it’s not like information goes through my brain and then disappears. i remember most of my life.” he hesitated, “everything i was sober for, anyway.” he tagged on the last part as a mumbled after thought, staring blankly at the cement.
connections masterlist -
aite, hello folks. i lost a good chunk of stuff over the past week, so i’m trying to figure out some new stuff for jackson. a lot of this will be carried over from my og connections post, but as i don’t have izzie or harrison anymore, i’ve had to edit it down a bit. ( if any of it looks familiar, mind your business. )
below the cut are some general plotting ideas. if you see any that suit your character, please give me a shout and we can work out the details. i’ll add more as i go but i’m tired now so.
“my mother’s trust issues are leaking into my chest and I’ve got my father’s nose and his tendency to stop calling back so I’m sorry about the 9 missed calls I have from you and the 6 voicemails I never played I swear I’d love you if I could”

a feeling of guilt rushes through venice’s system when she holds up the bell jar by sylvia plath. as if she’s being found out somehow. and she doesn’t like being found out. ‘ it, y’know, makes me really wanna dance, ’ she says, looking at him pointedly. she bites the inside of her cheek because she doesn’t know how to introduce herself, by her real name, or her club name. venice or medusa. one is safer than the other, but she feels like they’re having an outside-the-club conversation. she figures she’s not wearing the fucking mask, so what the hell. ‘ i’m venice, ’ the blonde announces. — ‘ now you. ’
her hand movements caught his attention, and jackson glanced over to take a look at the cover. his eyes narrowed, and he mulled over in silence. “i felt very still and empty, the way the eye of a tornado must feel, moving dully along in the middle of the surrounding hullabaloo.” he quoted absentmindedly, scratching at the wood with his nail to leave a mark on it at a specific measurement. “odd choice of book for that purpose - doesn’t she spent the entire novel being depressed?” he paused for a moment, before quickly tacking on: “but whatever floats your boat.” he wasn’t one to judge.
suddenly, she offered her name, and jackson’s hands stilled once more. his head cocked to the side, albeit his gaze continued to stay locked onto the wood in front of his fingers. “venice. like the city.” he repeated, attempting to commit it to memory, before he returned to his work. “jackson. also like the city, i guess.”
“so i wasn’t actually going to come.” sliding into the seat across from taryn, jackson collapsed back against the chair, watching her down the bridge of his nose. “but then i thought - how pathetic would it look if it looked like you got stood up? just sitting here at a bar, all by yourself, looking kind of like a loser. and it kind of hit me in the ethos.” raising his hands, he mockingly placed them over his chest, offering taryn a fake pout to go along with it. “so congratulations. i’m not leaving you out in the cold today. you’re welcome.” ( @tarynsoto )
jackson didn’t really do the pestering thing. usually, if someone didn’t want to talk to him, he respected those boundaries because when he didn’t want to be bothered, he expected the same decency. but the thing was: he hadn’t really heard from freya since the day he found duchess. it had been a few blissfully silent weeks, and honestly, things were starting to get weird. usually there was some kind of contact, even if it was just jackson ignoring the persistent friend requests freya sent on his inactive facebook account. at first, he’d barely even thought about it; he liked being alone. but as time wore on and he still didn’t hear anything, he was starting to get a little uncomfortable. part of him was wondering if he did something wrong. and while he may have ignored that for anyone else, part of him didn’t like the idea of freya being mad at him - actually mad, not just her general irritation with his presence. and so he found himself standing in front of her door, gently knocking and stepping back while it opened.
because he couldn’t come empty-handed - that would imply concern. and jackson wasn’t concerned - he shoved a bag of dog treats through the doorframe towards her. “some lady in my building gave me these because she mistook duchess’ wailing for a dog.” he blurted out, his now-free hands coming to hide in his pockets. “and i don’t know any dogs. except for your demon, so - they’re yours. his. whatever.” ( @freyawoods )
@freyawoods
helloooo. i’m still not feeling 100%, but i figured a plotting call is a lot easier to start with to ease back into things when i eventually wanna write prose again. if anybody wants to figure out some plots, please feel free to give this a like and i’ll come to ya dms and we can do some plotting. <3
