Pretty in Pink
Meet Scarlett. She’s one of the sweetest babies I’ve photographed and at just five days old, it’s pretty impressive that she seemingly knows how to pose. Her big fur brother is Tripp, and they both have amazingly loving parents who are crazy in love, not only with them, but also with each other. It’s inspiring to be around this kind of love.

All You Need Is Love
Motherhood is such a beautiful blessing and the multitude of surprises along the way, are an understatement on this journey!
Sometimes, the mothers that I meet at the hospital aren’t prepared for the spontaneous delivery of their baby, and when I come by to photograph their bundle of joy, they realize they didn’t have time to pack clothes for their newborn.
That’s when I get resourceful – using flower petals from bouquets delivered by visiting guests, using ribbons from my own personal collection to wrap this newborn gift, and using props that I find in their rooms. At the end of the day, what I realize is, “all you need is love”. ;)

My time in Kenya has been one of the most challenging trips I’ve ever experienced. In order to protect myself from breaking down, I found myself having to separate my head from my heart daily so I could do my work without crying. It’s been difficult to put into words the rollercoaster of emotions I’ve felt, from uncertainty and fear to courage and gratitude. To think I was almost robbed at gunpoint and to know that the locals live with that acceptance everyday, is still unfathomable to me. . I am grateful I can retreat to a completely different life of safety, comfort and convenience, but many cannot. I am grateful for the unending love I receive from my family and friends, which has enabled me to pursue this project in Kenya and make a difference with the community I’ve come to know and care for. I am grateful for my life, and for the love and impact I can make on the lives of others . I wish to shed light on the conditions in the Dandora dumpsite and the amazing work that DADREG has done so far. There’s a long road ahead for them, but the heart to transition lives from the dumpsite lifestyle of drugs, crime, and despair, to one of dreams come true, is very attainable. I will continue to be the light in this darkness and shine even brighter to help our brothers and sisters transcend the depths of their despair. Come join me.
Nzuri
Nzuri, Swahili for beautiful. And that's what I fully see and experience here. This one year old girl plays around DADREG's center where her mother is learning how to sew. Learning a trade will help the mom leave the conditions of poverty by creating a new source of income so she can stop her current lifestyle of living off the dumpsite. In the small training room, I see about 10 women with 8 infants and toddlers -- some on the laps of the mom as she works with the sewing machine and others, napping on the floor. Providing a training center for these women gives them an opportunity to be self-sufficient, and empowered to create a positive life for these precious children. Across the yard, a primary school has been built out of corrugated tin and wood strips and the plan is to transition the children to a building made out of concrete instead. DADREG has limited resources and it has taken them over two years to build their facility and it is only half way from being complete. The positive attitude of the staff and volunteers and their commitment to giving back to the community by eradicating the cycle of poverty, one person at a time, is a huge inspiration. For me, that is where I see and experience the greatest beauty of all, in the generosity of their love and desire to give...just like many of you who are supporting them through your support of me. ✨🙏🏼❤️
From DUMPSITE to DREAMS
OUR STORY
What if you were so poor, you couldn't afford FREE education because of the costs associated with books, travel, uniforms, and other materials? Many of the youth in Nairobi, Kenya, drop out of school because of their extreme poverty level, so that they can scavenge in the dumpsites and in the streets to survive.
We all know that education is the way to eradicate poverty but if these youth cannot find a way to stay in school, this cycle of poverty will continue to perpetuate their families and communities.
What can we do to make a difference? This is OUR STORY because we are part of a bigger plan, where our kind thoughts and actions of love can make a positive difference in the world.
Through Photographer Without Borders, I have been selected as the photographer on assignment with the Dandora Dumpsite Rehabilitation Group (DADREG) in Nairobi, Kenya. DADREG is a community based organization whose mission is to transition the youth out of the dumpsite by engaging them in sports -- to learn about teamwork and to face challenges with confidence and courage -- and education -- to foster critical life skills, vocational and entrepreneurship skills. The Dandora Dumpsite covers over 30 acres of land and is the largest dumpsite where unrestricted deposits include industrial, agricultural, domestic and medical waste. Studies have confirmed the presence of dangerous elements such as lead, mercury, cadmium and PCBs which are seriously hazardous for humans. The community sees that there will be no easy end to this largest and most flagrant violation to human right and environmental health in the country. This is where DADREG comes in to make a difference. Established in 2009, DADREG’s mission is to help improve the livelihoods of people who work in a dumpsite through education, skill enhancement, and microfinance. In combatting poverty, this organization aims to create a channel for communities to realize their dreams through information and awareness creation.
This fall, I will be traveling to Kenya as the chosen Visual Storyteller with Photographers Without Borders (PWB). We are a community of storytellers empowering everyday heroes and "do-good" grassroots initiatives worldwide. At PWB we believe grassroots initiatives deserve more attention as they tend to demonstrate the highest success rates in creating social change due to their organic, local and community-oriented nature. We strive to operate with an anti-oppresive, intersectional framework that values ethics and amplifies locally and community-produced, grassroots narratives. The mission and hope of PWB is that by amplifying grassroots voices and narratives by storytelling through photography, video and social media, we offer a new way to look at the world: through the lens of possibility.
MY HOPE
This is going to be a challenging project - both emotionally and physically - and I am no stranger to travels in developing countries with less than comfortable conditions. This time though, I am traveling alone and after 3 connecting flights, over a span of 25 hours, I will arrive in Nairobi solo this Fall to document the lives of the current youths living off the Dumpsite and the impact that DADREG has made through their generous efforts and support. I have the passion to fulfill visions and be a part of transitioning lives from DUMPSITE to DREAMS and you can too.
I am seeking your support to raise funds to cover project-related costs, which include donations to the two non-profits I'm collaborating with. Each year photographers like myself donate hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of time for causes that document the work of grassroots initiatives that are making a real change in this world -- where it is most needed. The Protector
I was simultaneously super excited and nervous that I found myself hyperventilating. This was the closest I had ever been to the king of the jungle, in the middle of the Serengeti. I tried to remain calm but I could only remember quietly squealing, "Oh my God, oh my god, oh my god" under my breath. At only five feet away, this lion could literally annihilate me with a swipe of his powerful paw so I tried my best not to be a distraction. Focusing on his confident and calm stride, his beautiful mane and powerful presence, I couldn't help but wonder in awe of all the beautiful creations on this earth. It is a humbling experience and also a great reminder of our responsibility to protect the wild and look after one another.
International Women's Day

Which, where, how?
It was approaching sunset and the cows were on their way home. They were being herded by the young Maasai boys who were with them all day, watching over them and protecting them from harm’s way. I captured this scene while our jeep zoomed by, on the road from the city of Moshi in Tanzania towards the village where a Maasai tribe was expecting our visit. I came across this photograph in my archives and it resonated with me loudly as my life currently feels like this somewhat chaotic scene. I sometimes feel like I don’t know which way I’m going or sometimes as if I’m being pulled in many directions at once. But the one thing I do know as I continue to clarify my purpose and continue to seek my path, is that each direction I take will bring me one step closer to home.
Welcome 2016
It’s hard to believe that the first month of 2016 is almost over. New Year’s Eve in Sydney is still a fresh memory in my mind and was certainly a night to remember, what with two fireworks displays on a summer night with loved ones around us -- one at 9pm for the kiddies, and the main event at midnight for the grown-up folks.
With an amazing view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, I was in awe and in complete gratitude for such a memorable way to ring in the near year; not to mention that a good night’s slumber was only 20 feet away from the balcony with the view. As usual, I do not make new year’s resolutions. Instead, I believe in setting the right mindset and intentions for the year. It’s yet another opportunity to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and challenges, and create another level of growth. I’ve collected a few quotes that have been inspirational for me in the past month and will continue to be so as the year unfolds. Richness in Joy
On my visit to Tanzania with an amazing team, we visited the homes of a few students supported by one of the NGO's we worked with, Excel Education Fund. EEF provides financial support to the deeply underprivileged children in Moshi, Tanzania, by giving them supplies and health insurance so they can attend school and receive basic education. This exposure enables them to dream big and achieve results that will eventually take them and their community out of poverty. On the way to one of the homes, we were followed by giggling children playing in the streets. Their pure joy and curiosity were contagious. We also visited their school and saw the bare conditions that the students studied in. Despite the limited resources, the children saw the opportunity for education as a blessing and were full of joy and excitement. It was a beautiful reminder that we get to be grateful for what we have everyday.
Sunshine & Smiles
As I walked along the beach and aimed my camera lens his way, he smiled, waved, and stayed put so that I could capture his friendly energy during the golden hour. He was the most perfect spontaneous model that I could ask for. Thank you, my modern-day Maasai boy.
