And yes, I am upset because why does she have to die of AIDS while the Cishet character who also gets it magically has it go into Remission as she dies. Angel is the most interesting character in RENT and she is treated the absolute worst by the writing (part of what happens when a cishet white man writes about the AIDS crisis)

I have no issue with a transfem character being morally flawed, but the issue comes in when she is the only one in the main cast whose actions are read as something negative, and she is the only character who dies of a disease half the characters in the story have, when her character in the source material (La Boheme) doesn't die. It just gives me a weird feeling

There's a number of things I questioned, too, but actually the bronze era thing... makes sense. And I'm so sad to see that it's being misunderstood.

So the 'bronze era' people are thinking of is probably not the same one Odysseus was referring to. In greek mythology, they believed time moved in a long loop: circling through certain eras until humanity ceases to be and then they are, eventually, reborn without imperfections.

The exact names and stages vary, but there's a stage that's often reffered to as the 'bronze age'. Odysseus might be theorizing about their place in the loop.

If I remember correctly, he also says something along the lines of "there are no heroes", which ties pretty neatly into this idea. The age that follows the bronze age is supposed to be the age of heroes, but if heroes don't exist, then the next one is the iron age— the last one, which heralds the moral downfall and eventual extinction of humanity. He's uncertain and not just a bit wary of just what may be coming in the future.

So, yeah, if anyone's curious the wiki page is a pretty good place.

Uuuh i see your vision! I didn't think of interpretating it that way. Its also interesting in the fact that (iirc) hesiod was the first one to write clearly about the five ages of men and there is a myth on a supposed poetry fight between hesiod's works and days and homer's iliad and odyssey and the former winning due to the society changing (if my reasoning makes sense lol). The bitterness of knowing your era is about to end mixing historical facts and mythical facts and greek philosophy makes for a very compelling narrative but imo its undermined by nolan's instinstence to have it while not working for it, exactly. Like the references to the LBA collapse and helen saying there were economic reasons for troy's assault which nod to it taking place in the real world, but not committing to making it look like verosimilar enought to the bronze age aegean sea, which makes you think "oh they are going the dreamlike surrealist mythological route" (which would fit w the way the odyssey and iliad have come to us as a mishmash of bronze age and archaic greece and the belief of the five eras where the things in the poems and myths happened For Real) but its a thought undermined by the overall implications that most of the magical events are just odysseus' ptsd acting up.

SORRYYY if this sounds incoherent as hell i agree w you. There are some great premises but its like nolan tried to remove too much of the dyonisiac and put too much of the apollonic in the myth but didnt balance it well so its just... very inconsistent

Absolutely. It's a.. unique interpretation for sure. I feel like it's less about the original epic and more about separate messages Nolan wanted to put on a screen. So it's a mish-mash of different stuff.

Plus, Nolan doesn't really make movies so much as allegories.

His Batman trilogy, for example, wasn't *about* Batman, but about the CIA and Occupy Wall Street movement (pro-CIA, anti-OWS). Batman was just a loose framing device to make those allegories. Likewise, this project was never about adapting The Odyssey, but about using it as a loose framing device to tell an allegory about the erosion of law in modern USAmerica. Hence the diverse casting, the grittier dialogue, the horrendously inconsistent costumes, the major emphasis on xenophibia and hospitality, etc.

That makes it a deliberate movie—maybe even a smart movie, when taken on those terms. Nolan did exactly what he wanted to do, I think.

But whether or not that makes it a *good* movie ... Well, that's up for debate.

I don't like RENT as a musical because it dehumanizes its queer characters and then I get told I am calling it's POC characters caricatures, when I never said that. Yes, the character I complained about is POC but my issue is with how she is written as a transfem character.

This is a man who is VIOLENTLY aware that when it comes to conservatives, he is a Muslim first, a Brown Man second, an Immigrant third, a Socialist fourth, and a human a very distant fifth, if considered at all. He was also a young adult during the Obama Years and will have seen Republicans rip Obama to shreds for wearing a tan suit instead of a dark one and use literally ANY excuse they could to try and degrade his image.

Despite the fact that a mayor who wears a T-shirt and jeans might "seem more approachable" in the eyes of the average American, Zohran Mamdani knows that someone with his profile fundamentally cannot get away with that the way his White colleagues can. He has instead put in the effort to look professional and BE approachable, because not only does it make it easier for him to reach and represent his constituents, it forces everyone, including both his opponents and establishment Democrats, to engage with the work he is doing instead of judging his image. The fact that he is always seen in a suit and is recognisably The Mayor is, while also something he has fun with, a deliberate choice to ensure he is as inarguably A Professional Politician To Be Taken Seriously. The added humour of e.g. the hi-vis is a bonus, only achievable because he works so hard to Look Like The Mayor.

To bring the serious back to the fun post, Mayor Mamdani's father Dr. Mahmood Mamdani is a political sciences scholar who wrote a book called Good Muslim, Bad Muslim. It discusses the history of political Islam, factors that led up to 9/11, and the repercussions on Muslims worldwide. I think it would be a very informative look into some of the pressures on Mamdani as the first Muslim mayor of New York. I think if we have the time it's very worth educating ourselves about the history behind why things are the way they are right now.
