The central joke of the Ulysses Ogre meme hinges on the Ogre holding themselves to unreasonable standards by expecting to fully grasp one of the most famously difficult works of the 20th Century after only a single reading, which just doesn't work if you substitute your favourite video game, because frankly, your favourite video game is not Ulysses – but to be fair, the overwhelming majority of books are not Ulysses either. There's probably a video game somewhere out there that's as textually challenging as Ulysses, and it's probably some random-ass RPG Maker game from 2006 with an author whose name is a dick joke and a present fandom of approximately eleven people.
for the longest time i somehow had it in my head "yeah okay finnegans wake is so impossibly dense that there's barely an academic consensus about the plot of the damn thing and that's the joke there specifically, but surely ulysses is like, something everyone's supposed to know and that i'm just uncultured for not getting, i shouldn't insult everyone's intelligence by assuming it's even close to being as difficult"
and so i took the message as more "everyone operates at their own level, and that's nothing to be ashamed of if forcing the issue will hurt" and not "stop holding yourself to impossible standards and beating yourself up for not meeting them"
once someone pointed out that "ogre finished reading ulysses at all" was part of the joke, it occurred to me that it's basically the impostor syndrome version of this XKCD strip
and realized i was, in fact, the ogre here.
or, to be more succinct:
EVERYONE CALL OGRE STUPID AND IT'S TRUE! OGRE BARELY EVEN LITERATE! OGRE FINALLY FINISHED READING "ULYSSES OGRE" BUT OGRE CAN ONLY IDENTIFY SURFACE LEVEL THEMES LIKE MEDIA LITERACY AND SELF-ESTEEM, AND CAN'T COMPREHEND DEEPER IDEAS LIKE "SOMETIMES SOMETHING ACTUALLY IS DIFFICULT AND IT'S NOT JUST A SKILL ISSUE ON YOUR PART" THAT MAKE ULYSSES OGRE A TUMBLR CLASSIC! OGRE SO DUMB, IT MAKE OGRE SAD! AT THIS RATE, OGRE WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND SILICATE CHEMISTRY!
Yeah, I've bumped into a lot of folks who think the joke is that Ogre really is barely literate and is misreading the themes of Ulysses, which is, ironically, the product of poor media literacy causing them to misread Ulysses Ogre.

this makes me so sad holy shit
[Image Description 1: A drawn comic of a crying ogre, who holds a copy of Ulysses by James Joyce. The Ogre says, in all caps:
EVERYONE CALL OGRE STUPID AND IT TRUE! OGRE BARELY EVEN LITERATE!
The Ogre continues, with normal capitalisation:
Ogre finally finished Ulysses, but Ogre can only identify surface level themes like Religion and Nationalism and can't comprehend deeper ideas like 'Remorse of the Conscience' that make James Joyce's novel a Modernist Classic!
Ogre so dumb, it make Ogre sad! At this rate Ogre will never understand Finnegans Wake!

remember when charlie kirk got shot and died
do you know how many times i’ve been sent this
i had the most profound gender euphoria i’ve ever experienced today. i was applying oil to my chest so i could take off my transtape in the shower, and i was just kind of scrolling on my phone, passing the time a little. occasionally i’d glance at myself in the mirror while waiting a few minutes to let the oil sit.
i saw my growing body hair, my light dusting of stomach hair that continues to fan out towards my sides and the thickening happy trail creeping downwards, and i felt so overwhelmingly excited that it’s starting to thicken and spread.
suddenly, i had this thought… “i love being me.” and honestly, i’ve never felt that way before in my entire life. i started crying genuine tears of joy for the first time ever. i could barely stand to look at myself in the mirror for a few minutes, but not because i hated what i saw. no, this time it was hard to look at myself because i was overwhelmed to find that i didn’t hate what i saw.
then i found myself wondering if this is what transphobes are so afraid of; a 20 year old trans kid reduced to tears of joy on a random saturday afternoon in front of his bathroom mirror because things are finally starting to feel right, my body is beginning to feel like my own? because for once i want to live?
it has been a very long time since i have imagine a future for myself but i’m starting to.
what a beautiful experience being trans is. no one will ever take it from me. death before detransition.

being anti-amatonormativity in a romance centered world is like watching half the people you know put all their eggs in one basket and then drop the basket and all their eggs break and they’re crying and swearing they’re never gonna do that again and then a month later they have all new eggs in a new basket and they tell you the problem was they didn’t have a strong enough basket or fresh enough eggs and then they drop the fucking basket again.
(this post is about putting all your time, energy, and care into one relationship, about staking all your happiness on a romantic relationship, effectively making the entirety of your joy and stability dependent on one person who could exit your life for any number of reasons no matter how great the relationship seems. it’s about the societal expectation to build your entire social life around one long term relationship, putting all your eggs in that basket, so to speak, instead of tending to larger social network and maintaining a variety of strong connections so that even if one very important relationship comes to an end, you won’t be losing your whole social life in one fell swoop.)
idk man. i just think itd be really cool if sign language classes were mandatory throughout primary school. yeah because it would make communication with deaf kids and autistic/nonverbal kids much easier. and those kids would be accessible to the others so they could make friends and have healthy relationships. yeah. and kids would eat that shit up man. like their own little secret language? they love that.
